Fun fact: There was an early version of How Bad Can I Be? (the song that plays when the Once-ler becomes consumed by greed and pride) called Biggering. This version also had the Lorax try to prevent the Once-ler from turning into a greedy businessman and took most of the lyrics from the first and last non-chorus lines of the final version, in which they both appear during the second half in this version. This was actually more menacing than the final version, during the second half it turns from ballad into metal, and an opera chorus is heard near the end, and the line "Who cares if a few trees are dying?" was going to be "Who cares if some things are dying?". This song actually stood out compared to the ones used in the final product, and could've saved the Once-ler's character, but it was cut since it was too dark, which, ironically, was going to be used in an adaptation of one of Dr. Seuss's darkest stories. EDIT (8/12/2023): Okay, so it wasn't really because it was anti-corporate (I got that from Schaffrillas when he was talking about The Lorax in his Illumination ranking), I don't know how "anti-corporate" ties into it being cut, but I guess if it means it won't market enough, it kinda makes sense as a phrase. Still, Biggering is a great song.

I feel like the reason why a lot of these movies came out around this time was because very large companies were trying to shift focus from them to a more "consumer guilt" approach. Now some consumers are getting wise to that, so they're back to the whole "pay people to deny the impact on the planet" view

Most kids did sad stories from the perspective of child workers but because Lorax memes were big at the time, I just sang How Bad Can I Be with slight lyric changes in front of the whole class. All of the students just stared at me and my partner who was supposed to sing along just bailed on me, thank you for reminding me of this moment. Dr. Seuss called himself a doctor as part of his pen name because his father always wanted him to practice medicine. Though he did not earn a doctorate himself, instead he earned a Bachelor's at Dartmouth College in 1925. However in 1956, the same college gave him an HONORARY doctorate. He also got honorary degrees from other prestigious institutions like Princeton in 1985. Despite him not being an actual doctor, Dartmouth College opted to rename their medical school after him, the Geisel School of Medicine in 2012. No joke I actually had a long talk with my friends about the Lorax Lore and we came to these conclusions (I wrote this before watching the vid just to see if we came to the same conclusions): O'Hare not only runs a miniature city state, but has also perfected weather control technology, as seen through the blue sky in the town versus the overcast outside. Thneedville might be a bastion of the Christian Faith, as seen through the 'parking lot' one liner. The factory talked about in the 'smog in the sky scene' is actually outside of the city walls. There is a good chance it is the Oncler's old Thneed factory modernized to produce for O'Hare. Thneedville is also possibly a pocket dimension, as seen through the vast suburbs compared to the seemingly small size of the city itself. The Education System of Thneedville might teach O'Hare to be a sort of savior, not to mention raise the kids to be fine with everything being fake and plastic. And now for the most interesting part: As for the air O'Hare sells, it cannot be air, since in the commercial scene, it shoots out of the bottle like a vacuum. This either means that the 'air' inside the bottle is another kind of gas, or the entire town of Thneedville is pressurized like a gas canister somehow, and the citizens are actually breathing an artificially produced gas meant to simulate oxygen. This could explain why all the flowers at the beginning actuvate only when the man walks past with the O'Hare Can: They are mean to activate when this 'air gas' is around. However, it is also obvious that the peole can still breath, and it is clear that they buy O'Hare air to survive daily life. Yet at the same time, the toxic waste produced by this way of life seems to be non lethal, as seen through the glowing boy. What this all means is unknown to me yet, but I will think about it a little more.

The "air" is probably not air, O 'Hare probably sells the fuckers a mutagen that makes them resistant to their artificial lifestyle and the deteriorated quality from the exterior, the tree was not dangerous for producing air for free, it was because it threatened the propaganda around the real purpose of "air". In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, usually supporting branches and leaves. In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. In wider definitions, the taller palms, tree ferns, bananas, and bamboos are also trees. Trees are not a monophyletic taxonomic group but consist of a wide variety of plant species that have independently evolved a trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to compete for sunlight. The majority of tree species are angiosperms or hardwoods; of the rest, many are gymnosperms or softwoods. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are around three trillion mature trees in the world. A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree's growth and development. Trees usually reproduce using seeds. Flowers and fruit may be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones. Palms, bananas, and bamboos also produce seeds, but tree ferns produce spores instead. Trees play a significant role in reducing erosion and moderating the climate. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large quantities of carbon in their tissues. Trees and forests provide a habitat for many species of animals and plants. Tropical rainforests are among the most biodiverse habitats in the world. Trees provide shade and shelter, timber for construction, fuel for cooking and heating, and fruit for food as well as having many other uses. In much of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleared to increase the amount of land available for agriculture. Because of their longevity and usefulness, trees have always been revered, with sacred groves in various cultures, and they play a role in many of the world's mythologies.
