There are three reasons the PS2 outsold the Dreamcast, and they aren't mentioned in the video: 1) Backwards compatibility with the PlayStation. A huge library of popular games to offset the (quite frankly pathetic launch library) was a driving force of the PS2. 2) DVD. The PS2 was a video game machine that could play DVDs, and cost around $300 when most standalone DVD players cost over $200. 3) Timing. The PS2's price, features, and release date were announced just before the Dreamcast launched, killing any momentum Sega's system had. Now, I loved the Dreamcast, but the only way that the system could have competed with Sony was to get ahead of them with online gaming, but the true online capability of the Dreamcast wasn't ready for consumers until the PS2 had already launched, assuring Sega's eclipse from the hardware market.

You also forgot the fact that sega pretty much had its reputation gone down the toilet. Because of years of messing up, Sega is no longer being taken seriously
@ARCWuLF
@ARCWuLF Жыл бұрын
@@apple_m2_delight In my experience, working at a game store at that time, that never really entered the conversation; the Dreamcast at its release was so far ahead of everything else on the market (the original PlayStation and the N64) that you only really had to see it to be impressed. Even after the PS2 launched my boss would showcase some Dreamcast games that would make skeptics into believers. A great example was the Dreamcast exclusive "NFL2K" series, which was superior to PlayStation/PS2 "Madden" series in every conceivable way. For my "on the floor" experience, the DVD player inclusion drove more new PlayStation customers while the promise of PSone backwards compatibility (a mind-blowing concept among console games of the time) kept old PlayStation fans coming back rather than the PS2's pathetic starting lineup of games.

What I find to be an interesting omission (and I doubt if I'm the first one to comment on this) is how the mp3 digitally compressed downloadable music file pretty much destroyed music retailers like Tower Records. There's an entire generation of kids, today, in their mid to late teens, the majority of whom have never walked into a music store, in their lives, and purchased a piece of recorded music on a physical format of any kind. When you lose the kids, well, that's a record store's target demographic and core market.

+Jack The ripper I played the first MOH so much, that D-Day level was straight out of Saving Private Ryan at the time. Then COD came around and EA pulled their shit and didn't actually compete. Let's not forget at the time this was happening people were incredibly tired of WW2 games, now it's flipped. Though personally I want a good roman-era game without monsters and/or gods and shit. That's unmarked territory still.

Yes, but the inability to step up their game cost BlackBerry a lot, while the followers have adapted to the market, BlackBerry was doing their own think, targeting too small range of customers, then ultimately being left behind. I might not have BlackBerry myself, but I have a friend who has one, and I seriously would never want a change from my quite cheap Android phone. And trust me, I write a lot. By the way, I also hate Apple.
@XC777
@XC777 9 жыл бұрын
It's not that they couldn't keep up. It's the fact that Blackberry refused to step away from their principles. Blackberry was seen as a business phone and they targeted business people so when the iPhone came out and more and more phones were moving to touch screens Blackberry thought they had nothing to worry about because they thought they would always have their target consumer. They stayed with their "all business" model and phones these days are more so a source of entertainment (even more than a form of communication) and you're not going to be entertained by a blackberry.

Ellie5621 Ellie5621 look up family video. It’s the largest movie/game rental chain in the US and there’s over 700 stores nationwide there’s 20 in my state alone. In 2016 there was a thing on the news “family video, America’s last rental chain” and I’ve been going ever since, the place is always packed, soooooo many movies and games to choose from they have like 6 or 7 different console titles available including PS4, Xbox one, and switch. They partnered with Marcos pizza so every single one has a pizza shop connected to it and you get discounts on games and movies with your pizza too and if you order on the app they deliver the movies and games with your pizza so you don’t even have to leave the house.

I don't recall the name of the service, but I believe it was something along the lines of Blockbuster sending you three DVDs in the mail, which you would mail back at your leisure in prepaid sleeves, and then they would send you the next three on your list that you would create online.

I'm just saying that for right now, Redbox has probably taken more of those people who once visited Blockbuster as their customers.

+Lydomina True. Broadband and the internet in general killed AOL. Remember, AOL started back in 1985 (as Quantum Computer Services) and became America Online in 1989. Back then, there was no internet so, if you wanted to get info or chat, you had to use AOL or CompuServe or GEnie or Prodigy, etc. After the internet took off and, more importantly, after broadband came in, AOL was obsolete with it's dial-up.

Milliardo5 True, but it killed off HD-DVD for good. Besides, it's become the standard discs for PS3, PS4 and even rival Xbox One. So while it's not as mainstream for movies and other uses, it pretty much cinched the video game disc market.

That's not at all true. Torrents are still pretty rare, and 15 years ago, torrenting was far less common (especially considering the BitTorrent protocol is only 15 years old). There is no evidence to suggest torrenting had a significant effect on the decline of Blockbuster.

Too bad because video rental stores used to have way better selection of movies, at least in my country. We still have a few rental stores around but they're limiting their opening hours more and more...Damn, our lazy asses. I mean, unless living on a rural area, a rental store isn't that far away and the return can be done while going out for some other business.

Especially if you live outside the United States. Growing up, I had 2 video rental stores nearby, with a lot of good movies. Now with Netflix, since I live in Canada, I have limited options on Netflix because the movie selection is like 10% of the US selection.

Redbox put a hurting on Blockbuster too. On another note, the internet put a hurting on girly magazines like Playboy and Hustler. There was no reason to buy them when porn is on the internet. Digital print is also putting a hurt on magazines and books.

Really is a shame, I used to love renting games from them as a kid. At least in the US blockbuster definitely could've survived. They knew about Netflix's plan and continued to snub their nose at the idea even as it was driving them into the ground. They replaced late fees with other fees, massively started cutting corners and reducing their selection. If it hit them by surprise I would understand more, but the fact that they didn't react when they were still on top is insane. They tried putting out something similar to Redbox, but even that was flawed because you couldn't return to any location. They sat on their hands wayyy too long while other companies destroyed them.
