I have 1 Chanel piece. A 1983 flap bag. From when they first began using serial numbers. In excellent condition with the heavy gold hardware. The chain is so beautiful, it's just a plain chain, no leather woven through. It's like a beautiful piece of jewelry. I carry it to parties and nice dinners, otherwise it's carefully stored. It's my most treasured bag. I am so grateful to have it, to me it represents that time period of Chanel, and no worry about quality, price increases, everyone having a bag that looks just like mine (real or fake) etc. Videos like this are so good, and just remind me why I chose vintage at this stage of the game 🙂

What you said about Chanel's end game makes a lot of sense. Clearly if those bags go up to $30k in front of our eyes, they really aren't going to get any sale. They have aggressive price increase to catch up to Hermes bag prices and now they're kind of leveling off, but going to be more secretive about any increases they have, so they put price upon request. Now that we all kind of know their prices are around Hermes price increases, we are conditioned to think that Chanel bags are same level as Hermes or even pricier. Honestly....with their poor quality, I don't see their bags worth it at 5 digits. If I really have $10k or more to spend on either a Chanel or Hermes bag, I'd go with Hermes. At the end of the day, we want to spend our hard earned money on something we know it will last long especially if it's a classic. Don't want to remember being classically stuck with a broken bag lol.

Great analysis Dacob, I think you're right. But why not set the "price upon request" just a bit lower, so that the realm would start at 9000 USD? That way they could reach their endgame sooner and would not have so much badwill regarding price increases and greed. It would have been a "smoother transaction" IMO. Also, why aren't they taken the quality issues seriously? Is it pride? Prestige? Chanel should stand for a certain quality, this is just embarrassing. They are really hurting the brand by ignoring these problems IMO, that should really be their first priority if they want to be like Hermes. To go ahead with this strategy without fixing the quality just seems ridiculous and reckless.

Good question. I think they first wanted to make it clear that they are priced in the range and even higher than Hermes quota bags. Once they make it clear they are above Hermes quota bag prices, they go into price upon request mode. Just my opinion and speculation of course. Alleged.

They did it with the wallets too. I was looking and one night the prices disappeared. It was gone for awhile and after about it week the prices came back with a price increase. I had to call because of the "Price Upon Request".

They do that each time there is a price increase. The prices go offline for a day and up to a week even as they change the prices. But the maxi and now jumbo are permanently listed as price upon request.

So, I have a completely different perspective on the decrease in quality of Chanel goods. I think it's on purpose. So regular people stop buying their bags. They want to get back to the super wealthy clientele, but they can't get there unless everyone and their dog stops buying the bags. The only 2 ways they can do this is to increase prices, and decrease quality. You may say to yourself, "but then the wealthy folks will stop buying them, too!" I promise you the wealthy clientele isn't buying the bags that are falling apart. They get sold the "good stuff." And once middle-class folks are funneled out, the quality of Chanel bags will "magically" go back to how it used to be.

Hi Dacob, great video (as always!) I am one of the 🤡 who still has so much love for Chanel while I also have been disappointed and upset with a lot of their recent decisions. I feel so split down the middle!! It’s so hard to see a brand who I have so much passion for make so many mistakes and lose consumer trust. At the same time when my heart bag broke, I also fell in love with Chanel RTW and my tweed jacket is one of my favorite items (and I think most luxurious) I own. While Chanel has declined in quality a lot and costs are up, it’s still one of my favorites🙈. Hopefully this last increase was embarrassing enough to bring them back to earth. Time will tell. ❤

i was once told in a lecture at uni that legally, if the price of an item is over 10k you don’t need to list/tag it when it is put on display in the store or store window. not sure it applies to websites but i would guess they treat it the same. I noticed they no longer list the price for jumbo on the Canadian site. I did see what the price was on a seasonal colour after the last increase - and it’s $13850.00 plus tax. Funny cause that is $150 more than a Togo hermes birkin in size 30. Exactly, they don’t want us to track prices anymore. They tried about a year ago to take classics off the shelves and only show them to select clients in VIP rooms - but that didn’t last long 😂 And yes, I do feel like they’ll slow down the increases significantly but in secret- they don’t want the masses who “invest” in handbags to panic.

An an EU citizen I am eternally grateful for the EU consumer protection laws - no way that that one doesn't get a refund for a bag that's broken after a month, no way that it should take 5 months to get it repaired. Due to quoting EU consumer protection laws, I have even managed to get Dior to go against their conditions (which are not in line with the EU law), to send me a replacement product.

Maybe they're doing it on purpose, they want to be as exclusive as Hermès and maybe in order to reach that level and have a "better selection" of clients and being as exclusive they need to taint the reputation in order to rebuilt it again. The bags are being made in China with minimal final assembly in France or Italy, so they can be labeled “made in…”. That and cutting any other corners that can be cut have lead to Chanel’s poor quality.

The problem with the Chanel bag is that it is everywhere and the market is saturated. I think that they are trying to decommoditize their offering. (The process of de-commoditizing your products or services adds intrinsic value to something ordinarily stuck in a paradigm of saturated markets).

IMO…Chanel keeps raising prices because they need clients rich enough to not complain of their inefficiency…I’ll keep my Longchamp on my arm and my money in the bank.😊
