On today's video, we discuss the ratio of water to polish mixture on extremely soft paint on this black Porsche Boxster. On rare occasions the paint responds to using straight water with no polish. This video explains what happens when you need to remove excessive amounts of paint residue with water. Thx for watching! -L

I have watched almost all of your videos, Larry. Every time I watch a new one, I am impressed by your knowledge and expertise on the subject. I am equally impressed by your openness and willingness to share this knowledge and expertise. If you were somewhere in Europe, I would totally drive 1-2K miles to come see you and have you fix the swirl marks that the dealer left on my brand new car. Keep up the good work - and be careful not to work too much. You take great care of other people's cars. Take time off to care for yourself and your loved ones.

I figured this out a few years ago, it does work. Newer Porsche cayenne does have this soft paint. slow tedious polishing and a ton of water. My boss didn't believe it would work untill I showed him on a similar Model. Slow rotations a bunch of water medium cutting pad medium cutting polish. Gonna need to reseal when done. Good video.

Water is a cleaner so must have some abrasive component to it. Really cool you discovered that for this type of paint.

Dear Lary, To you as Kevin Brown, I will always be grateful because I detail a brand new honda civic turbo with a soft paint with Rupes Duetto, Rupes white pad and Diamond and I'm micro defects. I used the technique of not putting extra polish and the pad four water jets on the panel to work on speed 2 min on the duetto and polishing and it was perfect. Thank you for this video I had ever seen and that allowed me to get me out of this problem. A big thank you sir!

again Larry thanks for the insight I kind of use that method, I do use the distilled water method of keeping the paint surface lubed so I will not introduce more swirls along with the polish on the pads. but to make a mixture like that is very interesting.

Thank goodness I watched this a few months back when you put it out. Detailing a black suburban that was giving me fits. Then I remembered this! I used detail spray instead of water, but that's just cause I didn't want to walk inside while I was testing my theory. Mine wasn't nearly that soft and I was able to use a softer pad and just thin out the polish.

I live in Central California heat and have a Subaru Impreza (extremely soft paint and can be a pain in the @$$ when trying to detail) I have not attempted to polish my Subaru in 2 years due to the soft paint and I really didnt have a idea of what I was doing, I just knew I was ending up with a detailed finish with lots of holograms. I really enjoy learning from your great wealth of experience. Thank you very much. I am a window cleaner by trade and pride myself in my work. I am open to being taught or learn by just watching others. If I may as a newbie (a few days in briefly watching detailing videos) pass along my suggestion. I noticed you laid down your polisher on the ground. I instantly thought that was dangerous for contamination from the wheel sponge possibly touching the ground. Here's my question. Isn't there a portable little stand that can be used to hold the polishing machine as you briefly stop when working around the vehicles?

My wife has a black-on-black '12 Passat and there is no keeping it clean. It's a daily battle. You should have monthly local clinics. There are lots of us who could benefit from hands-on if not too expensive. I'm over in Fairfield county.

I had a white 1987 Porsche 944s that I used to lavish care on and what I found worked well in the final gloss step of the polishing process was to spritz a 25% mixture of 91% isopropyl alcohol with distilled water on the finish and then buff vigorously with a clean terry cloth or microfiber cloth. I would then apply two thin coats of a good Carnauba wax, followed by a final water/alcohol wipe. This gave me a deep mirror finish that seemed to repel all water and dirt and was very easy to keep clean.

You have an amazing program. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it and leaned a great deal. I even tried some of the projects and found that they work very well at minimal costs. I am currently busy re-furbishing the mag wheels on my M/B and would like some assistance from you. I cleaned all the rash and sanded down the silver paint from the Mags using 180 grid dry sandpaper followed by 1000 wet and finally 1500 wet which produced a smooth finish. I am now ready to paint the mags and need some advice. Following is how I see the process. Please advise me if I am on the right track or not and any other suggestions you have. 1. Apply 3 coats of primer with a drying interval of 10 to mins. between each application and wet sanding with 2000 grid between each application. 2. Apply the 3 coats of base paint with a drying interval of 10 to mins. between each application and wet sanding with 2000 grid between each application. 3. Apply the 3 coats of Clear sealer with a drying interval of 10 to mins. between each application and wet sanding with 2000 grid between each application. 4. Polish and buff for maximum shine. If I want the base coat to be in Chrome will the same procedure be followed as per above or is Chrome paint handled differently and can I use Chrome spray cans off the shelf. Your assistance will be sincerely appreciated. Thank you and once again you have a great program.

I ran into this myself yesterday, not that level of soft but damn close. Black 2015 Toyota Tacoma, even the finest finish polish would leave micro-marring. I did not have to polish with water, I found a combination that worked. I used Black Pearl from Car Brite, not really a big fan of that product but it got the job done. Black Pearl medium polish with a white hex logic pad, followed by the fine polish with a black hex logic pad. Finished with Chemical Guys Black Light, used as a finish polish with a red hex logic pad. Finished with sealant and wax.

I color sand all the time at my shop. Clear that just got done baking 30 minutes prior to me getting it, so its veryyy soft. What i found to work the best for me is ( past the compounding ) running over the panel with 3M perfect it EX polish with medium pressure @ 1000rpm. Making sure there is still a light film to wipe off. Going over the panel in the same pattern again with very light pressure @ 1200rpm. Wipe the panel down. Last and most important polish for any dark color. 3M ULTRAFINA Polish and using a spray bottle to mist the whole panel down with water. Running over the panel with medium pressure @1000rpm, apply a bit more ultrafina and a few sprits of water then using a very light pressure @ 13-1500rpm and making sure to polish edge To edge of the panel. Not little tiny spots as if you were using rubbing compound. I can Pull a black car directly into the sun and have Zero hallograms or swirls! Everytime. ITs all about pressure, speed, technique and product youre using.

Almost as i do it! :) For a normal car i use Mothers heavy duty rubbing compound on a double sided wool pad which removes heavy scratches, even 600 grit sanding marks, put the product on the pad in circle big as a cd disc. Then after that i use a soft foam pad on a rupes, also with Mothers heavy duty. That way i dont need too wipe the product off between the different pads. Try it and you be amazed. I dont know whats in Mothers heavy compund, but it could be some form of anti glide sollution. Some really sensitive cars i finish of with 3M ultrafina as the second step. Doing it this way makes it really simple actually, and saves you a lot of time. Even if you wipe it off with alcohol afterwards it looks awesome. I have spent hours and hours in the garage testing all sorts of different brands.

Had the same problem with a black GM factory paint. The paint was done before. First i used P400, then P2500 and P4000 all with the machine, but after using my P4000 i thought "man that all doesnt work out." there were my "signature" and some tiny swirls all over the place. My "solution" were to polish the whole car with P4000 by hand and on low pressure. It worked out, but took me awhile. Some paints have just weird "personalities" like people. :D

On the black Porsche in jan video u described the paint as extremely soft as well, but emphasized slower arm movement and used 105 mf pad and decent pressure. Im just a little confused cuz it seemed like softer clear was harder to perfect.i know thats compounding stage vs here talking finish steps of polish but it seem like im hearing with the soft paint issue u coulndt find something un-agressive enough to get uniform correction, im just a little jazzed up with this hard n soft definition in regard to decribe how to go about correction.

+lvcsslacker +Radmarkx Though ceramics are a good idea in theory, in the real world paint needs to move and flow with the flex of the chassis. Because ceramics are so hard, they cause the top layer of coating to be locked into place and create microscopic fissures in the paint. Source: Thr AMMO NYC podcast.

If you want to get really technical. I would use reverse osmosis water. There are quite a bit of minerals in the water that come from piping and other items on the way to your home.

Have you ever seen the videos of Serge Langendoen? He is now Europe's best Detailer. also got an award from Angelwax. I wonder what Serge is doing different? he seems to use other products? his videos are a must for every detail fan. I wish Larry could also post more after videos, so we can enjoy the results !

I think I know why that might be of course you are correct that water helped out to pick up the debree stuck and scratched surface and doesn't clog the pores that would cause it to scratch more than buff so water is a genius method for polish grimmy so called painted surfaces two kudos for this awesome technique. Again all depends on the paint

Larry, do you have a detailing shop I can take my car to? Are you taking new clients? If not, do you recommend any shops? Either in the Bronx/Yonkers area or in the Farmingdale, Long Island area. Thanks!

This paint reminds me of Nissan black. It is the most difficult color I've ever felt with. Even when brand new off the truck.
