Can't thank you enough for sharing this video! It's exactly what I needed to do with my faucet. The only difficult part of the job was finding the part I needed. No surprise that the greedy big box home improvement stores only sell the entire faucet assembly, and their staff laugh at the idea that a tiny part inside is all that is needed to fix the problem - but fortunately the trusty neighborhood hardware store wins again. Again, greatly appreciated!

Hi Brian, 45 year old lady here who considers herself fairly handy in the home repair realm. Now that spring has arrived up here in Canada I went to turn on the outdoor faucet. NO WATER!?! My other outdoor faucets worked and the water to that tap wasn't closed off. What the heck? Time to You tube! lol. Your video was the first to come up and although my assembly was a bit different I knew exactly what to do thanks to you. I removed the inner rod and saw nothing but a spring on the end, hmmm. I went down and turned on the water to see if anything flowed now that nothing was inside the tap. Sure enough, there was water now. Plus on the ground now was the little end piece similar to in your video. It had become disconnected and left behind in the pipe. I actually just pushed it back on the rod and replaced everything to see if it still worked and it works beautifully. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a replacement valve just in case this happens often and the part is worn out. Thanks so much, I feel like a DIY pro today.

All urban/suburban houses I've ever seen have the outoor bibs supplied by the same pipe that takes water to the bathroom and kitchen. Usually, the water for the whole house is shut on/off at the outdoor underground valve. However, we live in a condo and each unit has its own valve in an indoor closet that controls the unit's plumbing including any outdoor hose bibs, as well as an underground valve for the whole building. Most problems are handled by turning off the individual unit's valve. This avoids shutting off the neighbors' water to fix YOUR plumbing problem.

I have an American Valve M72AS. It's the second outside hose bibb and I'm getting no water coming out of it, but the other one works just fine. From what I'm seeing inside I don't have separate shut off valves for them, they both have the same shut off. So this makes me wonder if the problem is what your describing in the video. Nothing comes up when doing a search for a springless check assembly for American Valve. Will I need to replace the entire hose bibb?

@Ralphie419
@Ralphie419 3 ай бұрын
Those are different. The valve is underground below the frostline and usually drains the water out of the vertical pipe when off (to avoid winter freezing.) There will be a shutoff somewhere on the property for that waterline. Simple things can be serviced from above ground by pulling the long stem out and replacing the rubber washer, etc. We've had underground leaks that required digging the whole thing out a couple times.

Great video! Can you explain what "jacked up" really meant? Why did that jacked up part stop the water from flowing?

We were pressure washing our back patio when the water to the outside faucet just stopped. Nothing comes out at all now, but the faucet in the garage is working fine as are all others in the house. Could this be the problem/solution you describe here? We’re in GA, so I don’t think we have a frost free hood, but I don’t know how to determine that either. We just winterize by shutting off under the kitchen sink and taping a sock over it. I’m afraid we’re not too plumbing savvy, and I don’t want to make the problem worse. Thanks!

I have an inside valve right behind the wall. It is easy to empty the water in the pipe from the inside valve to the outside faucet (by shutting down the valve first and then turning on the faucet), so that there is nothing to freeze. Why my house still had a 'frost free faucet' installed? It does not make sense to me. Moreover, I cannot figure out how the 'frost free faucet' works, despite quite bit researches and readings -- if the rubber tip (Bibb Washer) worn out, why the problem is 'no water' instead of leaking?

My faucets work, but if I shut off the inside valves for winter, (we have low pressure here, like 50 to 60 psi), when I turn them on in summer, it takes about 5 minutes for flow. Is that because air is in the lines? It happens also if unused for a while, too. These are new faucets, and neighbors have same problems. Am I right, or are new faucets defective?
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
How far away is the shut off valve from the faucet itself? That seems like a long time. 50-60 psi is pretty good water pressure. If they don't leak and function properly I would not think they are defective. Would be interested to know how it is plumbed for sure.

@@ThatFixItGuy it is 3 ft from 1, and 35 ft from the other. Once water flows, it's fine. The connecting pipe is like a blue hard rubber or plastic feed which connects to the copper lines. House is 4 years old, and it happened since day one.

@@ThatFixItGuy You are talking over my head. The water goes to both faucets, but not copper pipes. The look like a garden hose. That goes to a shutoff valve on each faucet (up or down lever). All indoor water connections are blue heavy duty hoses, like you'd find on a washing machine. It's definitely within code, as my last home had that as well.
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m sure it is pex pipe. Most homes are built with it these days. I would think you are fine. I bet it is just the way the plumber ran the water pipes is why it takes so long. If the faucets work and there are no leaks I would say good to go. 5 minutes is a long time though for sure.

Was it in the garage? They sometimes plumb hot water or a mixing valve for washing your vehicles. You would have to switch it in the wall I bet. Find a place close where hot and cold are close around there

Hi Brian! This was very helpful. I have the exact issue you’re showing here. What would you suggest if I try this fix and water still doesn’t come out? The older seal did look worn and I replaced it, but still no water.
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Have you removed the stem and looked in the faucet to see if something came apart and got stuck? Once everything is out I would then turn the water on and make sure you have flow coming with the stem in the faucet.

@@ThatFixItGuy you mean with the stem out, right? I’m totally flying blind here and don’t want to have a flood.

@impendingrapture yes. It may be a two person job when you turn the water on and off. Also a flashlight in there may help.

I like your video. But I still don't understand why the water didn't come out before your repair. How would a old/damaged springless check assembly block the water flow? Would appreciate any comments. Thanks!
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know why the springless check coming off the stem would do that, but that is what I found wrong in it. I thought it was weird too.

What if the rod wont come out? Should I just force pull it out or does it need further fixing?
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. Some pull out and some thread out. I would try counter clockwise turning while pulling, If it still wont come out then depending on your comfort level I would either replace or call a plumber.

No there could be something in there blocking it or a broken piece. Sometimes you have to take it apart and inspect it.

Have this same problem but I am not sure if it is the same description you provided in the link. Is there a universal on to purchase? Where do I need to go to purchase? Lowes , Home Depot or just a regular hardware store?
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It may be somewhat universal in the same manufacture. I would check for specifics though. Is there any markings the hose bib itself? Lowes adn home depot sell different brands I believe. My local hardware had what I needed. Send me a couple pictures if you like and I can try to help as well. ufix247@gmail.com

What if it's not a frost free faucet? Mine won't put out any water, but has a leak which makes no sense

I have a weird question. Hopefully i get a reply from someone. My dad is nearly 80, and has a bad back. His outdoor water spigot is quite low to the ground. Is there some type of tool that can attach to the spigot that extends up so he can easily turn off/on? It's just a standard 4 in. Anti-Siphon Sillcock Frost Free Outdoor Faucet. I was thinking of attaching like a metal yard stick to the turn off/on knob some how so he could turn it left and right as needed. I hope this makes sense. I hope even more someone knows of something. Thanks!!

What would YOU recommend to keep Dirt out of my Water Meter Box?...🤔 Thanks, 🤓 -Thomas Western Washington State
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas that is a great question. The meter boxes in our area that stay the cleanest tend to be one with root structure around them. Grass or some kind of ground covering plant. You would want to use a plant that won’t take over but keeps the soil intact. Most boxes are put in landscaped areas and with all the rain they just fill in with dirt. I have the same issue and unfortunately my box is in the neighbors flower beds. I hope that helps.
