Just finished reading Mike Scott's autobiography 'Adventures Of A Waterboy' and this song was a common recurrence throughout, in terms of the creative process in writing and composing it and trying to write another song as good as it. It's a beauty of a song in every way possible. I read an interview Bruce Springsteen did recently and he referred to making a great record as being like having to shoot for the moon. With 'The Whole Of The Moon' Mike Scott hit it dead centre. Brilliant!

Unparalleled perfection. It is close to 30 years ago when they played this song and when you see the Billboard charts today makes you think about the degeneration of modern societies. I doubt any song at the Billboard today will last more than 5 years, not to say more than 30 years. Mike Scott and The Waterboys define the best of the best.

Mike Scott, according to various versions, wrote this song in a New York hotel where he was staying with his girlfriend who asked him whether or not was easy to write a song. The melody is a tribute to various people among them Prince and the writer C.S. Lewis. It is an epic Renaissance fantasy in which the girl is always one or two steps ahead and sees 'the whole of the moon' while the boy can only see the crescent moon among castles, trumpets, kites, and unicorns. Brigadoon is a village enwrapped in mystery in the forests of Scotland appearing only one day every 100 years. BTW, the girl backing up with vocals is either the Scottish poetess Eddi Reader or Liz Wilcox. They resemble each other. I add this information because some commenters would like to know the name of the singer.
