In this video, I take you to Silver Falls State Park in Oregon for a second visit. A couple of weeks ago, my family and I went hiking in this park that has (at least) 10 spectacular waterfalls. Since then, I’ve been painting one of those waterfalls from a video clip that I shot on site. Today, you’ll see progress on the (trending toward abstract) painting I started last week and the beginnings of a completely new painting of the same subject using Inktense pencils.
The aspect of today’s video that is fascinating to me is how one subject matter and one artist can produce two paintings with very different moods. Yet they still both feel to me very much like “my style.” Come along with me to see the magic of the woods and the delight of creating with watercolors.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this very beginner phase of my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new. (340 subscribers at the moment I shared this video)
In my intro, I mentioned Melanie Chadwick, an artist and KZbinr who has made a plethora of delightful videos - notably, one about Derwent Inktense pencils and how they changed her sketching style on her walk and draw sessions. Here is where you can find that video and if you’re like me, you’ll be enthralled for hours by her content. I am now listening my way through her podcast (also available on youtube) while I paint. Here’s the link: • Swatching Inktense pen...
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something from amazon, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.
In this video I used:
Arches cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/41cwLNC
Stabilo pencil, black: amzn.to/40cZjG8
Derwent Inktense pencils, set of 12: amzn.to/3oj1dXV
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

Your abstract piece is so compelling. I appreciate the way you edit your videos to verbalize the artistic process. It makes for engaging viewing and sparks ideas of my own. Thanks!

Thank you, Peggy! I so appreciate your comments. :-) And YAY, I LOVE hearing that my video has sparked ideas for you. That’s what I love about watching other artists’ youtube channels so of course that is my immediate goal here. So I love hearing that.

You should join us at a Portland Urban Sketchers outing. 3rd Saturday of the month, somewhere accessible by tri-met, usually downtown ish.

It looks like such a fun group! I’ve been following the Portland Urban Sketchers on facebook for a year or so and I’m sure, at some point, I will join. Did you attend the one yesterday at Tillicum Crossing? I’ve sketched in that area once before, with a friend, but on the OMSI side. That’s a great spot.

@@klwebuga yes I was sketching from the Starbucks on the west end of the Tillicum Crossing. We basically gather then scatter to sketch. We then reconvene at noon for the “throw down” where we share our work. I’ve attended four times thus far, it’s a nice gathering, I suspect you’d enjoy it.

I’m very impressed with your imagination and ways of seeing. More things learnt today - the candle resist, the need for values. Thank you Kendra. Take care ps I love the tearing up and resticking thing. It adds such beautiful textures. Did you paint the little pieces before sticking or did you paint them once stuck?
