Today’s video is a woodland hike and watercolor combo. On a rare sunny winter day, we hiked on a secret path that led to a waterfall and a quiet stretch of the Sandy River in Portland, Oregon. I sketched two scenes ‘en plain air’ using colored pencils and sketching crayons by Conte a Paris. Back in the studio, I added watercolors while filming my process. It’s a relaxing and inspiring glimpse into my Slow Lifestyle. Enjoy.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this very beginner phase of my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new.
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something from amazon, I will receive a small commission with no extra cost to you.
In this video I used:
Arches cold press watercolor paper. I bought a large sheet at my local Blick Art store for $12. I found out that if I bought 5 sheets, it would have cost $48 - so, if you have the space for storage, it’s worth checking out what the “bulk” pricing is.
Conte a Paris sketching crayons: amzn.to/3Zf0La0
Note - these should only cost about $4 for the set of 4.
Stabilo pencil, black: amzn.to/40cZjG8
Derwent colored pencils: amzn.to/3FApe2K
The book I mentioned and read from is called The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh by Katheryn Aalto: amzn.to/3TGfaLo
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my iphone: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my iPhone 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

Kendra, that's so inspiring and enjoyable. You've come so far from when I first found your channel when you had I think 12 subscribers. You really have created a style of your own and your videos have a good mix of technical, creative and that added 'extra' of family and a stunning locations. Seems so far from the UK. Since I came to watercolour after a lifetime of oils and mainly acrylics, I've struggled with colour, so I (hope you don't mind) had a try at your woodland walk, slowed down and enjoyed the process and I think I've finally 'got it' Take care.

Hi Keith! Thank you for another kind message! Yes, I’ve been on a steep learning curve with video editing and what a pleasure it has been to think about what unique flavor I can bring to this space. I’m so glad you felt inspired to try a woodland scene after watching this video! I think the trick in watercolor is just having the patience to let paint dry before adding more. With oil and acrylic, we can just sort of keep going. Thanks again for the delightful comment.

Hi Kendra I’m just 12 minutes into this video but have to do some jobs (chores to you I think) but HAVE to make a quick comment b4 I nip off: the walk scene was enchanting, lovely to see you sit together and sketch. Fascinating about the conte and coloured pencils getting onto first layers, more things for me to try. I Really Really like your videos being in real time. I learn such a lot from the way you use the brush, and see the amount of water you use, plus it’s really relaxing. Also, I much much prefer it when you talk without using your notes. I hope that isn’t too forward to say that. I can understand why you are trying them out though and of course, it’s your call. I’ll come back for more at coffee time. See you then. Take care.

You are on my mind constantly. Hope you aren’t feeling stalked. I did some lily pads today and my first thought was how would Kendra see them. Now I know about messy middles, there’s hope that I can keep thinking and working on them till they look like a Fabulous Finish😂

Thank you for yet another super kind and encouraging note! :-) Oh yes, I am still working out how to say something interesting in my videos without it being “narrated.” It’s one of the puzzle pieces of making videos that makes it so fun… I don’t think I would have listed that as something to pay attention to before I started. I hope to share more videos where we sketch while out on a hike. I have the footage, just need to stitch together the story of the place.
