In today’s video, I am painting vignettes of Old Portland craftsman style homes in my neighborhood using a limited palette: inktense iron blue and QOR Quinacridone gold watercolor. I am doing this to provide myself with an easy invitation to get my brush wet! This is a season of heavy caregiving for me and I want to keep my creative practice alive. So, this is my strategy. So far, it seems to be working.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At the moment I uploaded this video, my subscriber count was 3245 people. Wow, that number still feels huge! Thank you for watching my videos and leaving delightful comments; it makes youtube so much fun.
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something (anything!) from amazon, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you - and that helps to support this channel.
All music is from the youtube audio library.
---
What I used in this video:
Arches watercolor paper, 156 lb, cold press: not available on amazon right now; I bought my roll from Blick Art
Derwent Inktense Iron Blue: amzn.to/45SMMuf
QOR Quinacridone gold: amzn.to/3sHPMex
---
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
-----
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

Thanks to you I just ordered a 6 color starting set. Qor is probably the only WC paint I haven't tried. I'm doing a series of tree trunks and now have a limited palette of 6 colors and new paint to try. And yes I finally opened my Arches roll and will be cutting slightly larger sheets to fit my mats. I find your videos so pleasing to watch. And in case you couldn't tell -inspiring ! Lucky you to live in that neighborhood!

Tree trunks… what a fantastic subject. A friend of mine got “hooked” by tree trunks some years back and she painted a rather large canvas with acrylic that was just stunning. I hope you love those new QOR paints! :-)

Okay, like your “Neighborhood” series. All your little gimmicks to create a look that you like are clever and strategic! I have myself found an interest in buildings, using reference photos and ink pen, quick sketches, followed by splashes of watercolor. Very impressionistic, using older, European street scenes. Have had trouble with selecting the right waterproof ink tools, lots of bleeds. Using a Sailor ink pen and micro pens, Filling up the sketchbook book I made.

Hi Larry! Thank you (yet again) for your kind words. I bet your street scenes are just delightful and I’m so happy to hear you’re filling up your handmade sketchbook.

I like the way you use limitations to open up creative possibilities. Thanks for another useful tip. I've been thinking a lot about the roll of Arches you use; it's a good value for a heavier weight paper. It's on my Blick wish list...and Christmas is coming. :-)

Hi Peggy! :-) I’m so excited for your potential Christmas gift of a huge roll of Arches! You’ll know it by it’s shape! Don’t forget the cutting mat(s) to protect your table and the metal straight edge. I am very happy with that paper and so glad I just went for it.

Hello neighbor! :-) Actually all of my “reference” houses are up the hill in Alameda, but all of those lovely architectural details can be found in Laurelhurst and Irvington and Beaumont… etc, etc. There’s a lot of material to work with here! Thank you so much for your kind words.

I really enjoyed that, Kendra. I think this may be the first video of yours I’ve seen. I’m in Portland (Oregon, I’m assuming!), too, and wonder if you teach? I’m new to painting, and although I’ve learned a lot from YT tutorials, I often think I’d enjoy an in-person class. Thank you for sharing your art process.

Hi Jill, thank you for your kind words! I don’t teach, but friends have really enjoyed taking classes at the Multnomah Art Center. When I first started, I took in-person classes through the continuing education program at PCC and they were wonderful!

I love your limited palette, and standard size, and inspiration Kendra. I am not an insta-grammar, sonI really like the way you draw us into your process. When you use the iron blue pencil and you go for the middle values, do you lightly shade the page and then wash over OR are you just using the pigment in the sketch outlines? 20:18

Thank you for your kind words and question! Yes, I do both, depending on how dark I want it - shading before and then wetting or just touching the outline with my wet brush. I’ve even gone back after it dried to add more pigment.
