In today’s video, I show you some mistakes with my first pass at a watercolor painting and how I set up my second attempt for a more probable success. I talk about the color palette, paying attention to values and the importance of not leaving out the very best part of a juicy image! In my case, that was the giant foot stepping into the Pacific Ocean.
Thank you for clicking on this description! I still feel very much like a beginner in “content creation,” even though my channel has gone from 1600 to over 2600 subscribers since my last video. That’s an amazing 62.5% increase! Wow. For my part, it is still very exciting just to imagine that any people at all watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. Just imagine how the last week has been; I’m downright dizzy from all of that metaphoric backflipping! At the moment I uploaded this video, my subscriber count was 2647.
All music is from the youtube audio library.
I mentioned artist Ohn Mar Win in this video, as she’s the one who turned me on to trying a nib pen. Here’s a link to her channel: / @ohnmarwinart
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something (anything!) from amazon, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you - and that helps to support this channel.

What I used in this video:
Stabilo pencil: amzn.to/43gAVp2
Emory boards: amzn.to/3pcDxWj
Tachikawa nib pen: amzn.to/3phJmS6
Nibs (compatible with Tachikawa) from: amzn.to/3Jssnnd
Sepia ink from Winsor & Newton: amzn.to/3XodKXv
Stash wild raspberry hibiscus tea: amzn.to/3CPmvQV
---
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
-----
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

Thank you for your kind comments! I agree - once the values were corrected and then I made sure to pay attention to the feature that drew me to the image… huge improvement. After looking at my 2nd painting for a week, I can even see opportunities for improvements in the composition. That is, if I get the bug to give it a third try! :-)

Putting the paint samples on a card like that really helps me see why the color family works. Great demo!

The addition of the ink lines created great depth and texture to your painting and brought it to a whole other level of interest. I look forward to seeing where your new, favorite tool takes you.

Hi Peggy! :-) I think the ink lines appeal to my architect background. This week, I’ve been diving into E.H. Shepard’s work on Winnie the Pooh books. He definitely used a dip pen! Wow, this kind of pen is so very expressive. I love it.

Very cool! I haven't used a nib for sketching since college (about 100 years ago). Have toyed with the idea of getting back into it, but never liked getting the ink on my fingers... But also would like to try that trick with the emery board.

Thank you for your kind comments! :-) Hmm, maybe ink-on-fingers is the reason for the blue rubber piece! I haven’t found that I get ink on my fingers with the Tachikawa nib pen. On the other hand, maybe I just haven’t used it enough! LOL. Yes, the textures you can get with the Emory board are just wonderful.

love your first painting but after u explained what u disliked I totally agree with you even tho I didn't notice it aft first your second pic is a huge improvement visually its much more pleasing. I often get worried about if starting a piece over is worth it but after seeing this i think i just need more confidence to just go ahead n give s pic i dislike another shot, thanks! Learned alot 2 from watching your process i never thought of using water color pencils like that or even use a branch for art!
