I frequently struggle with the "when to stop" ...but the detailing, particularly with eyes, can really make the personality shine through. And when it's right it draws you in. It's a beautiful portrait. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Patrick I just found found your channel, I'm a fellow artist and just started learning watercolor I love your videos and work i hope to see more of them!! Even oil painting too and sketches as a artist I think its good to work in different mediums, ive found doing only one tends to burn us artist out of creativity. I know for me personally this happens. Sometimes I work on a few different pieces at the same time in different mediums. Another thing I've found that is fun is you can download random word generator apps that will come up with random things like dancing bear, or flying fish ect and then you sketch that. If you don't know how to use apps you can write things on small pieces of paper put them in a bowl shake it up and take some out. Ive found it can be alot of fun and inspires creativity. Much love ❤️ 🙏

Hi Patrick, I thought I would let you know that I am really picky about what I enjoy in a watercolor. I’ve never watched one of your videos before and today as I was scrolling through KZbin, I saw this beautiful watercolor portrait, stopped to watch and thoroughly enjoyed your process. You’re very good, better than you know. Take time to enjoy the progress you’ve achieved while keeping an eye on getting even better. As far as I’m concerned you have arrived at success.

Sweet Toby. I really like this piece Patrick. The background is perfect. I find that it contributes to lifting the highlights in Toby's eyes. What always strikes me with your portraits is how deeply you bring the character and mood of your subject alive. I've heard you say that you are striving for livelier washes many times and I think you have succeeded here. I'm glad to hear that you will be doing more watercolour and I'll be looking forward to seeing more of you on KZbin. Patricia

I have been following you for many, many years. I always enjoyed and learned a lot from your watercolor videos. It’s good to see you back. I cannot helped but notice your anxiety (?) approaching this painting. You’re a great watercolorist and for what I’ve seen you paint, you should feel very confident about your skills as an artist. The best to you!

It is beautiful. He looks so real to me. I was wondering if you could give us tips on when in painting sometimes my blending isn't correct where one can see what looks like a water stain mark, how to fix that without making a muddy look. Please show more of your work. I really appreciate the tips that you give.

So enjoyed watching you paint in watercolour again. The painting is beautiful and adding the background was the right decision. Not overworked in my opinion you caught Toby’s character just so. Thank you for all your useful tips, I think I may go and rescue a few failed paintings with some pastels! Look forward to seeing you paint some more 🙂

Beautiful!!! Love the eyes and the nose and the white look for the beard. I like how you used your hi lights and darks to define Toby. He looks very real life to me. Love him and thank you for your demonstration of Toby. 💕

Beautifully done!! I’m glad you decided to add the background. It really finishes it off nicely and, like you said, really defines the white muzzle fur.

Superb, lovely work. I would love to be able to paint my dog who passed away last year. I'm only just learning, so I'm no where near able to attempt such a project yet....

Beautiful face. I love backgrounds. I'm only a beginner but I would soften the edges of the background and dog torso with water.

Enjoyed this - great to see you painting again! I especially like the fur texture you achieved around the eyes, and that velvety sheen of his ear fur. I just wanna pet that fella! Liked your choice of background color (elevated the warm colors of the dog) and felt adding it really brought the whole painting together.

That is a lovely painting and I think you are being much too hard on yourself. I do like the background you added. Toby looks like he was full of mischief - you are so lucky to have had him in your life. Take care & kind regards...

I really like this. Thank you! I want to paint my grand dog, he is a poodle mix with honey and cream color fur. Can you suggest what colors I can use for the under painting and the fur strokes? My results so far are not convincing. Thank you so much!

I think it is beautiful. Do you let your washes dry after the first wash before you add secondary and third washes? Or is it wet on wet through every stage?
