I am an absolute beginner to watercolour. I have been drawing for years but never took a plunge into watercolours. I know you have many years of experience but to me watercolouring is mind boggling but after watching your video I feel a little more confident in water control. You are by far the best artist I have watched, I love the fact that you don't skip through, I prefer a much more lengthy video showing exactly how to control water and paint ratio, taking it slow. Please keep the great work you are doing, for people like me it's so much easier. I love wildlife too, and I mainly draw animals, sometimes buildings too. Love your channel.💗

@@TheDevonArtist Hi Paul, I just found your channel (and Vimeo site) this morning. I've been wanting some tutorials and I'll be trying yours out. Watercolor is new to me too and I just started two months ago. I still have some supplies coming. Also, like Michelle above I prefer wildlife over other things, except portraits. See you around (electronically 😊).

I'm pleased you are getting back into your art, have fun with those brushes, and I look forward to seeing how you get on. The Robin video you have watched here on KZbin is my first one, let's just say the quality of my recordings on have somewhat improved over the many years I've been doing this. Paul 🎨

As a new wanna be watercolor painter I had learned so much by the time you were half way through the beak that I hit subscribe. I love your careful explanations, the attention to detail and how you take your time explaining the process, the colors, the brushes and how to accomplish each part of the bird. You have a gift for teaching, thank you for sharing with those of us who must learn at home. I really appreciate the beauty and techniques you shared.

Hi Patrice, what a lovely thing to say, I'm positively blushing! 😳 I simply love to paint and try to share the things I've learned't over the past 40+ years of painting with others. It may after all help you avoid some of those mistakes I've made along the way. Keep painting and keep those brushes wet, Paul 🎨

This is incredibly VALUABLE!!! I always say the best way to get people over on Patreon is to have a free full length tutorial. It allows us to see how you teach. I don’t mind saying that I’d absolutely devour every minute of a 40+ hour painting!! I think it’s important that people watching realize just how much time painting like actually takes. Know I know why you start with the eye, your bird is suddenly alive once you have that glorious eye!! It almost forces us as artists to slow down and do the little bird body justice bcuz he’s looking right at you. And oh my goodness, you just said almost exactly what I just typed!!! I had the comment about him being alive before you said it. I’m so blown away by that!!

Wildlife in Watercolour by Paul Hopkinson I'm definitely sure that your video's are gonna help me go from just a painter to an artist. Do ya have a video that shows ya looking at a photo and explaining it? Like highlights, where they are, what colors ya see, how to see what to paint, etc. This would be helpful, IMHO, as some people can't translate what they see into what to paint. Thanks! Y'all have a great day. Hugz, Tree

Thank you so much for your lovely compliments! I would love to add the colour mixing as well but it normally involves using two cameras, one on my palette and another on my painting. Sadly I only have one camera good enough for filming HD. One thing I do now though with my latest videos is to bring the mixing palette into the camera shot, this way you get to see the consistency of the paint and how I load the brush up. As you probably know all this is on my Patreon channel in the link above, but even if you don't go there I will add a little of this into some of my video clips on here. Paul :-)

I really enjoy your videos. I now see what I was doing wrong as a beginner. I've been painting directly on the paper without wetting first. I guess that is why I've been getting fuzzy edges. Got to try it with water first.

You're welcome Pauline, I'm glad I have been able to help you. The first foundation layer of paint can give you a better surface to apply the detailed layers over the top. Just remember that these first washes need to be shaped by using slightly stronger pigments for the darker sides and very pale for those lighter parts. Just don't go too dark though, light layers is the key. Paul 🎨

This is a really good detailed tutorial but it really would've benefitted me by seeing the reference photo in shot all the time. Also maybe to see your palette as you mix the colours as I'm a complete beginner.
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara, yes this is one of my early videos, so I was a little inexperienced with the video editing side of things then. Some people like to see the reference photo all the time, some now and then and others not at all as it could be distracting, so it's one of those tricky things to get right. Many of my website members download the photo and have it on a mobile phone, tablet, iPad etc displaying the reference photo, whilst watching the video on KZbin and the other video parts for this Robin on the free membership part of my website. This is where you can download the photo and outline drawing as well. devonartist.co.uk/ Regarding having the colour palette in shot all the time I could possibly do this, but again after lots of testing with videos with my members it's been one of those mixed reactions. So now what I do is bring in the palette for some mixing processes, not all, but enough to give you a good idea on how I get the consistencies correct. Thank you for your questions though and of course for watching my video. Paul :-)

Paul this is so generous of you to do the full real time tutorials on this, a couple of questions when you say intense blue Winsor and newton don’t have one called that could it be idanthrene blue, also is this beyond the capabilities of a beginner, I would love to do it, I love the detail and perhaps in a way it might be easier than doing say landscapes with lots of wet into wet in big washes, or am I understanding this process wrongly, I have a lot of patience as do a lot of graphite work mainly landscapes some architectural all of them take me 25/30 hours thats. without all the breaks lol ,
@TheDevonArtist
@TheDevonArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Margaret, firstly thank you for your lovely comments and even a bigger thank you for joining my Patreon community, welcome aboard. I have lot's of video instruction on there from the very basics to much more advanced levels, so plenty to watch and learn from. I class this Robin painting as a level just above a beginner to intermediate, so if you have practised washes and all the other normal watercolour techniques (see on my Patreon pages for the Technique ( www.patreon.com/TheDevonArtist/posts?tag=Techniques ), then the Robin should be achievable if you take your time, take plenty of breaks and enjoy the full process. :-) You mentioned idanthrene blue, this isn't one I use but after a quick Googgly search this is very similar to my intense blue which is made by Winsor & Newton. But to be honest with you Margaret as long as you have colours that look similar to the ones I use that is all that matters. Birds and animals vary in different light conditions, times of the year and so on. :-) As you say landscapes tend to be painted loose or semi-loose whereas the animal portraits I teach are quite detailed. However the detail you do is entirely your personal choice, so if you get to a level where you are happy with the painting, then sign it, frame it and hang it on the wall. So for you and your excellent patience this is a perfect medium and subject. Mind you I have taught people who to begin with say that they don't have the patience needed, only to find that they loose themselves into the paintings and time flies by! LOL I hope this helps and again thank you for joining my Patreon community! Paul :-)
