In India, Whatsapp is just too ubiquitous, almost to the point of no turning back..Im presuming here, but i believe that one of the first apps people download when buying a new phone is ubiquitously whatsapp..It would take a massive gargantuan leap or shift (even this is understating how massive the shift it will take) to dethrone whatsapp as the default messenger app..

See, my problem with WhatsApp is that for most people here in Germany it's the default messenger app. So if I would want to switch to basically anything else, I'd not be able to be part of important groups for university, just as an example. And I've tried convincing people to switch, but at the end I just gave up. And it wouldn't make any sense to just use it for like four groups and switch to a different app for everything else, that just doesn't work. I already use iMessage, Threema, WhatsApp and Signal (not as of lately), it's a mess. I ditched Signal cause the synchronization and push notifications are just straight garbage.

I haven't and I'm asking out of curiosity, because right now I don't miss anything in WhatsApp. That's the only good thing for me. I hate that Meta owns it but the functionality is good and beside the sometimes wonky desktop app, it's really reliable on my phone. So I don't hate the app itself, some people do but I don't know why. If anybody else wants to say something on this topic, go ahead, I'm interested in other opinions!

Same in The Netherlands, you *need* WhatsApp for many jobs, because employers communicate stuff via WhatsApp groups, as well as any kind of sports/organised hobby. I can convince my friends to use an alternative but I can't make my whole archery club switch.

20:25 😂 It happened to me too. I downloaded Edge with the sole intention to use it for the Bing AI Chat...but then I slowly started realizing it was better than Chrome. Edge uses less RAM than chrome on my Macbook Pro and it also feels snappier. Not to mention the Bing AI Sidebar is game-changing. If I ever have a question about something or I need a summary of the webpage I'm currently on, it does it instantly. I changed my default search engine to Google so searching for things still feels the same but, tbh I find myself using Google less and less. The only time I use Google now is for finding the right reddit post that has the answer to whatever question I have.

I've actually been using edge for the past 2 years on my laptop because it's better for battery, and it's honestly not that bad. Although, I do feel like search results arent as good as Google's are from time to time, but most of the time it's serviceable

as a brazilian it's always crazy to think that someone does not use WhatsApp. Here in Brazil nobody uses SMS. The Messages app that comes installed are only used to get 2FA codes

It's pretty much the opposite in the US. Everyone just uses the built in messages app especially iPhone users. With Apple having about 50% of the phone market here iMessage is huge and then after that everyone uses SMS. Some occasionally use other services but because Facebook has a horrible reputation here no-one trusts it

Regarding the *new* CarPlay that we haven’t heard about. I believe at the time, they said 14 automakers were “excited” about it, and that the first announcements of compatible models was going to be in late 2023. So, that’s probably why we haven’t heard anything. Still, the radio silence is concerning. They may be waiting until wwdc 2023 tho

The reason why WhatsApp is a crowd-favorite is cuz of its simplicity & ease of use. Remember, 99% of the population doesn't consist of tech reviewers who switch their phones every other day. Whatsapp even works with feature phones so the grannies & grandpas don't feel left out. Its just much more accessible and user-friendly than most other apps. Also, its much more secure than David's favorite Telegram (yes this is targetted at David). Telegram doesn't even have encryption on for all chats by default. Whatsapp's encryption on the other hand has been time and again proven to be very secure. Authorities from multiple countries have had difficulty in breaking its encryption. Just because its owned by Meta doesn't mean its less secure (as ridiculous as that sounds, its true) P.S. Edge is inarguably leaps & bounds better than Chrome in every way possible. I was a Chrome fanboy until a couple of months ago when I tried Edge (cuz of Bing AI) and have never looked back. Its literally just Chrome, but much, MUCH better. Even for Android and Mac.

Just try it for a week, explore its features and you'll know what exactly I'm talking about. Even the Android and Mac versions are great.

Not to be nitpicky but, the only downside Telegram has about encryption is that it's not end-to-end for regular chats. The cloud space for your account is encrypted. It is end-to-end for private chats, as in the incognito chats that Telegram offers. Sure, end-to-end for WhatsApp is a more secure implementation, but Telegram's encryption as well hasn't been cracked till date afaik. I'd like to know if it has, but that still doesn't take away from the fact that Telegram is just plain better at almost everything a chat messenger should do, personal chats end-to-end encrypted or not. All your other points are extremely valid about the ease of use as well as availability. Also also, Edge browser all the way. It has a native PDF viewer that is insanely powerful.

just a note to the team, with Google Auth, you can export your codes to another phone, this is what i do I had a Pixel 5A for about a year, screen decided to turn off one day, thankfully i had my codes exported to my old phone (samsung A50), only gripe is you had to export the codes everytime you added a new app/website/service, but it was better than just having it on one device, i now have my codes on 3 different devices, my current Pixel 7, my old phone, and my tablet.

Unfortunately this tidbit is kind of out of date now, but if you see sign into Whatsapp on a new phone before saving your chats, assuming you hadn't erased your old phone, you can just sign back in on the old phone and then do the back up, it doesn't automatically erase them

Phones have gotten more capable, but I also think that the software we run has gotten a lot more wasteful. I'm don't take a lot of photos on my phone, and so most of what I do is either looking at text, writing short texts or looking at static images and yet after a few rounds of updates everything starts to feel sluggish.
