You know what makes that 7-year old Yoyoka performance even more impressive? The fact that she's not doing that at home. I believe she was in a club performing that whole thing live.... In other words, she was already a professional club player, of THAT kind of calibre, at the grand old age of 7, playing Onyx of all the songs to play..... how can we not be crazy about her?

As everyone can see, Yoyoka, as well as Senri Kawaguchi, can play both jazz fusion or rock at the highest level. Its rare for a great drummer to play both genres equally as well. As for this video of Yoyoka at age 7, lts clear she is above and beyond all drummers her age and older. She could literally fill in with any well known jazz act for the night and cut the mustard !!! SICK !!!

Oh, just a shout-out to Senri Kawaguchi, the big sister of the Japanese drumming girls. The list of brilliant Japanese female drummers is insane really. Includes the likes of Junna, Kanade Sato, Yoyoka. Of course there's Akane Hirose of Band-Maid who is much older than these girls. In fact, there are probably more that I missed on this list. Damn, wonder causes so many skilled drummers to come out of that country really.....

Another great reaction. I remember when I watched my first couple of Yoyoka's videos I was blown away. But then I saw some comments wondering if she was just a studio drummer: maybe she needed a lot of takes, maybe there was some studio trickery going on. Could she play as well with a band in a live environment? Then I saw that Onyx performance. So yeah, she could. Aged 7. I love the laughs of disbelief from her bandmates at the end. She's obviously as amazing live as she is on KZbin!

Hands up who pointed out on the original video that in the first verse, she doesn't quite land alternate strokes on the bell of the ride, where she wants them, so between there and the next verse, she managed to adjust her grip on the right stick, to get it right 2nd time around - just using the headroom in her spare tank. As ever with Yoyoka it's *already* mind-blowing, then someone comes and points out yet another ridiculous dimension (thanks to whoever that was).

@@WavePotter you’re welcome. Thank you for indulging us. 🙂 There’s a couple of live band videos where she was 5 and 6 (she also played the piano with the drums on that one). Worth a look and see her progression. Her development from those to now, her ripe old age of 11, are leaps and bounds. There’s one when she was 4 (doing the Beatles) but the vid wasn’t clear and a little far away. Her parents was as indulgent as they were brave to put a 4 yr old in the helm. So supportive and have tremendous belief in their child. And little Yoyo didn’t disappoint. She was adorable and kept time.

I'm a year late, but a part of her loose/tight playing style comes from her switching grips constantly. She plays easy stuff by holding the sticks right at the tip to give her more powerful strikes by leveraging the weight of the sticks and switches to loose mid grip during faster fills.

Great job Wave! If I'm not mistaken I thought I heard that Yoyoka and Senri have hung out before. Might have something to do with why she did this cover. Just guessing. How awesome would it be to see Yoyoka do an update of this cover, huh! Yoyoka said in one of her videos that she likes the deeper sounding drums. Yoyoka is looking around the stage like she's played this song a 1000 times and could do it in her sleep. Leads me to believe that maybe she picks some of the more difficult covers to do because she gets bored? What presence she has.
@TwinTailSteve

You got it, they have met, pretty sure it was what got her to go for this song. Yoyoka makes covers with other Hokkaido musicians, I hope her fans like us get the idea in her head. I bet if she thought about it she would knock it out. Did you know Senri was into Deep Purple when she was little? I have a feeling someday Yoyoka is going to eventually lean to more jazz influences.

@@TwinTailSteve I didn't know that about Senri. I wouldn't be surprised about Yoyoka though. She just loves playing with all kinds of different people and being as respectful as she is to everybody, if she wants to play with somebody specific she will probably learn their style of song. She also said one time she doesn't really want people to listen to her playing so much as she wants them to focus on the song and the whole band.

@@Glen.Black. Yes, that sounds like Yoyoka. I think she is a music lover first, who happens to have an amazing talent. She makes a point to pull back to make space for other players, which sounds just like normal professional band stuff. I really want to see her redo ONYX with a band, and use it a a vehicle to really express her own groove. I want to see her JAM it. And the same with "Smokey" by Char. Smokey is my first vote! Extended versions with the band backing her jamming a lead, so she can really let her soul talk.

@@TwinTailSteve yes. She’s so matured and professional. I read that Madoooon noticed (when she was much younger) when they’re doing a gig that she has an excellent ear. She said she even caught her ‘looked’ at her dad when he made a mistake. She’s very aware of the band and the sound. True musician. I would love to see her collaborate with Senri and do ‘Smoky’ with Char. I know she already played with Char (Kenken and other Japanese legends) doing GTBT at the RS Festival. They were in awe and impressed by her. I like Char, he’s always generous with the young ones. Hope he invites her to play with him or at least do a video collab.
