The catch with all this automatic stuff is programs are made with rules. These rules try to create what people like. However, our brains are wired to prefer mew and changing things, so once rules are made to make what we want we start wanting something else. Rememmer the 70s with 48 channels/tracks and months in the studio. Remember Rumours by Fleetwood Mac 's Rumours, The Eagles? What did we like the next year? 96 channels? No, three chord punk music. Then came synthpop. After analog synths with increasing polyphony came FM, completely different. Then came Big Hair Rockbands with their pointy guitars. Then came grunge. Then house, dance, trance etc etc. There's one certainlty: once you got the rules, they're outdated. Because they are rules. And we are people, humans. And never the twain they will meet. In music at least.

This is apt when it comes to music tech because with this shit there's a significant lean toward the tech side, and technology (often) develops linearly, so they don't really understand what art is, also, the craft itself is important to artists, bypassing the craft to reach some "efficiency" and thus the intentionality of using your skillset makes the art of creation so damn unappealing... or I'm speaking out of my ass here, it's how I feel

@@MultiSkillsTvCh I bought a new computer early this year and there's no way I'm paying hundreds of dollars to use plugins that I owned for years due to their WUP (which I personally view as bait and switch tactics...think you are buying perpetual but not really). Plus, when I bought my Waves plugins their prices were way higher than now. 15 years ago Waves was the best VST manufacturer. I don't think that is the case now. I don't miss their VSTs at all. I think Softube, Arturia, Eventide, SSL and many other VST makers are setting a higher bar quality-wise. I missed VocalRider for a while, but that was out of laziness. Automation isn't that hard to do for vocal leveling.

I have gripe with Melda and Ozone regarding CPU. And Melda can sometimes be overwhelming... But if there is that one specific issue, I can count that one of Meldas will be able to do it. Unfortunately I still haven't tried SmartEQ and Waves... But if they are CPU efficient to run on every track for mixing that would be worth looking into, at least on my side...
@markwincek6688Ай бұрын
Came here to mention DSEQ3. I would HIGHLY recommend! The depth and ease of use it offers is the perfect middle ground between Melda and soothe. However, I don't think I'm using the learn function right. The settings it suggests are never as aggressive as I aim for. Almost seems like it offers the inverse value that it wants (+8dB instead of -8dB). Anyone else notice the same? Also the waves plugin in the vid seems to be doing way more with it's learn function than DSEQ3. Can't comment on MSpectralDynamics learn feature because I can't really figure it out, lol.
@mixphantom0101Ай бұрын
@@markwincek6688 I forgot about the "A.I" learn... basically useless! Waves Equator's "learn" is just capturing an average of the signal to use as a threshold - which is what SpectralDynamics, DSEQ and DSP Pro's DSM (and quite possibly the original spectral compressor) have. DSEQ3 calls it "custom threshold" (which is exactly what Waves just claims to have invented!) ;-)

I think what devs are failing to notice is that while you want your full synths/instruments to generally resemble the frequency shape of pink noise(its balanced per octave), you still want certain resonances that make up the formants of sound. These give tonal qualities and transient information. Waves could have already made the plugin better by allowing for you to reintroduce certain dry(uncompressed) formants back via a spectral gate or option to isolate certain frequencies of the delta(in parallel ofc).

EQing is to making music what multiplying is to math. Resonance surpressors are just the latest cherry on top of the cake of innovation that has grown over decades of plugin development, alongside a lot of other innovations that are equally fascinating in audio, like AI, spectral effects, max4life mudpie generators, modular systems etc. innovation will never stop in this field, because it's just fun and people want to work like that. Hype aside: It's just a new plugin, it's surpressing resonances like Soothe. Idk how good it does that, but it's cheaper, because it's from Waves. And it also lacks support after a year or something, because it's from Waves.
