As always, life saving (and saving my life savings, if you know what I mean) video from my favourite A6 C6 DIY specialist WheelsAndMotors. My own notes - after doing both front and rear pads: you should always do pads and discs at same time but if your discs don't look too bad you can get away with just changing the pads. In theory, this should not take more than 4 hours - about one hour per wheel. It took me 2 weekends... because you should always be prepared for something to go wrong. Two weeks ago I started on the front pads. Broke my locking wheel nut on an overtightened bolt, had to go to Audi to take the stupid things off and replace them with normal bolts. This weekend - did the rear pads, spent an extra hour on a stubborn caliper bolt that only came off with lots of wd40 and swear words. Using one of the worn pads to push back the calipers with the push tool works great. YOU WILL NEED a battery charger! I cannot stress this enough. If you have a weak / old battery, the EPB will drain it flat when you release and close the parking brake from OBD. I had a 1.5 amp trickle charger - it was enough to ensure I did not break the EPB but not enough to start the car after I finished. Thank God I also have a booster. My advice - Use one that can deliver at least 10 amps. Other than that, easy peasy.

Wow! Great comment! Yep - all EPB software warns about battery being OK to operate, personally I never had a problem with rewinding, but that's something to keep in mind if battery is bad. When I rewind pistons, once they are open - I switch ignition off and take the key out and only put it back when job is done and it needs closing. And of course powerful combination of swearing/WD-40 that is always used on a background of my videos 😉

Great work!! Excellent and easy to understand. I always appreciate it, and always return to this simple and classic explanations. Thank you WheelsAndMotors!!! Question: is there a recommended 'scanner', like the one used in this video, for example? Thank you in anticipation for your help.

You're welcome 👍 I'm not sure which scanner to recommend. A lot of them these days should be able to do it. Just check before you get one.

Alternatively when pushing the caliper piston back, you can use one of the old brake pads against the piston to push against. Saves any damage to the piston face if the retraction tool slips.

Thank god you have a video on this. Every problem I ran into with my Audi you helped me out big time. One question the brake disk doesn't look bad at all I've to do my pads the light came on.
@wawayltd3 жыл бұрын
There is no sensor in rear brake pads. As for discs - It's to your discretion, I don't change discs every time I change pads.
@wojciech_migdaАй бұрын
Great video! I was able to take my disk off without taking the bracket off. But How can I take the piston out of the calliper? I need to check it, because the pads keep rubbing on the disk and after 4 km the whole tire is hot...a few more km and the fluid starts to boil.... I guess there is some dirt inside that stops the piston to go back, so I would like to clean it all.
@wawayltdАй бұрын
I have never disassembled a calliper, sorry. A few times when they had a problem (not on the Audi), I just bought a new one. Refurbished. They sell refurbished, too.

Very good video. I will probably be ordering the scanning tool. My question is, do you have a video showing how to change the front upper suspension arms, I am told they are very difficult to do, but I can't afford the garage prices and they will fail the safety test this December. Thanks in hope you can help.

Thanks Ian. That Audi in the video is not mine, mime was gone about 6 years ago. At the moment I can't offer anything. Maybe try to search for Elsawin, or there is a website with manuals from manufacturer, but they seem yo have some issues with Chrome, maybe link will start working soon: www.erwin.audi.com/

Hi good video. Can you tell me tho do you need to do anything with the scan tool after the pads changed and wheel back on? As in does the electronic handbrake sort itself out or what? Thanks Chris
@wawayltd3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I have never tried to change pads without a scanner. One VW mechanic told me that if you take parking brake motor out to rewind caliper and when you put it back together - it should sort itself out. One thing I know for sure that if you rewind (open) calipers with the scanner, they won't go back by themselves - you will need scanner again, I tried it. You see, when you open them with the scanner, parking brake system puts itself into malfunction mode. I believe, it shouldn't be the case with manual rewind... but I would recommend getting a scanner, some of them are really cheap these days, but definitely worth having one.

You need a computer to do it easy. Or you can do it a little harder way by removing caliper motor and rewinding it manually.

Hey, I just changed my pads and rotors today on the rear. However, the brake pad light is still on in the car. Is there something I missed or I should do? Thanks for the video.

As far as I know this car has brake pad sensors on a front only. Most likely there's something going on on front brakes.

What is the name of the Scanner you are using?

The scanner I used was this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5WZhHeHbKlni6c I'm not sure, if the link in the description of that video is still the one to use. But there are many more that can do that. Just make sure that they have option to rewind EPB.

I replaced rear pads on a VW Golf Mk6 - but now there is resistance in the rear wheels when I spin them (like the brakes are grabbing a bit). I adjusted the handbrake but still they grab. Any ideas? could it be that I should have also replaced the discs too ? could the calipers be damaged ?
@wawayltd4 жыл бұрын
When you lift back of your Golf, do the rear wheels turn/spin ok?
@hughhennessy79124 жыл бұрын
@@wawayltd as I say they do move but with resistance ( ie they don't spin freely).

They not supposed to move absolutely with no resistance... Don't know, I can't judge just via KZbin comments. Maybe calipers, maybe bearing? Maybe show it to some mechanic, see what he says..
