About the DIN-Rail box: That type of enclosure is very common over here in germany, here its called "Kleinverteiler" or "Automatengehäuse". We use it for sub-distribution, like in a garage, summer house, etc. mainly. You said you considered using a Hensel one, if the model numbers are similar across the channel, did you mean one like the KV 1512? I don't think thats the best choise for british electrics, it has rubber grommet enties on the top and bottom. Theres only 4 places for cable glands and they are on the sides. I would rather use an Spelsberg AK (or AKi if you need UV-resistance) series enclosure, all sides are straight (so you can join multiple together or to other enclosures if needed) and it has places for M16-M40 glands. Theres a variety of different models too, from ventilated to flange connection or without a door on the first row when using terminal blocks. About the smart relais: I would NEVER install no-name IoT devices, especially when theyre cloud dependent, for customers. There have been to many cases where Companies vanished or stopped support. Protection of personal data and network insecurity due to outdated software is another thing as well. A brand that has been tried and tested for years now is Shelly, based in Bulgaria and are the best option if not using KNX in my opinion. They have a cloud, through which you can automate them, but you can automate them on the device locally as well. The most used option though is to use them with a home automation system, like HomeAssistant. I've installed at least 150 Shelly's in the last few years (~50 at home alone) and except some problems with the very first versions, they have been up and running with no problems so far. In this case I would have used the Pro series which is DIN-Rail mountable, has WiFi, Bluetooth and wired LAN. There are 1 and 2 channel versions with and without energy measurement at a width of a circuit breaker and a 4 channel version with energy measurement (and display) at a widht of 4 breakers and another similar, but specific for 2 blinds. Note that all these are single phase only, the contacts are not potential-free ones (wouldnt be possible with the energy measurement shunt anyways). Another noteworthy thing: In most cases, you get an input for every output on the device. so can can still use normal switches in conjuction with smart control (but non-latching buttons are preferably)

True. Use KNX if you so a rewire and can put a green cable in. As for energy meters, if we can’t use KNX ones (ABB EM/S), we install Siemens SENTRON 7KM PAC2200 with ModbusTCP, ModbusRTU and M-Bus protocols. So you have all global standard protocols for smart meters in a single box. Easy to visualize them with pretty much anything, from Home Assistant to ioBroker and they can sit there and be useful for decades…

I have one of the shell 4pm pro that I have to install at some point. 40 amp total load, 16 amp per circuit, 4 loads, wifi and hard wires Ethernet which may be useful if you’re installing into a metal board. They also have wiring to manual switches. You’d need to have something to run it like home assistant to get the most out of it.

Looking at this, had a look for data sheets, nothing on the net. My concern here would be what is the wattage use of these devices? Assuming they each use 0.3 Watts, then thats 1.2W when all 4 in operation. 1.2W in that small plastic (insulating) enclosure. Mmmmm possible go over its working temp but no data sheet to say what its max working temp is either. On a hot day (30 C) that box internal temp is gona get to over 50 C (initial estimate) (edit), yep heat dissipation for that box is 0.25W/(m·K). FYI, a single phase mcb dissipates about 2W at rated current, but they are rarely at rated current for very long periods, and rarely all at rated current so DBs are not such an issue, here we have all 4 units running creating heat.

I have a disabled brother, and we had a bungalow converted for him with a complete rewire. It has got things like voice controlled lights, voice controlled central heating, ventilation, TVs, even the patio watering system and so on. It uses Amazon Alexa and mostly devices compatible with the TUYA Smartlife App with the central heating using BG's Hive System. Apart from making sure that the lighting rewiring provided permanent neutrals, all of this used bog-standard household wiring with nothing whatsoever different in the consumer unit. Indeed, I would not want anything installed in the CU. To have a lot of individual circuits switched by smart devices inside the CU is, to my mind, inflexible and locks you into a particular set of technologies and the way the wiring has been run. As it is, I have been able to extend the scope of automation as my brother's progressive condition worsens. To my mind, smart technology mostly belongs in the periphery, not in the CU, with very few exceptions. Of course, there is the possibility that some of these companies will disappear, and even big ones drop out (BG dropped their Hive Door entry system), but as long as TUYA and Amazon keep going, then it should be still supportable. There are plenty of alternatives, and the costs are not too high versus the huge benefits.

I'm currently working through something similar, individual lighting circuits, though as other commenters have mentioned I'm using shelly devices due to the wired network connectivity. This all goes through home assistant and allows for switches to be sat on the relays in detached mode so smart bulbs don't break. I've not got as far as using these relays with anything other than lighting due to the 16A limit, though not an electrician!

To use Zigbee m, now that matter is taking over the consumer/retrofit world is indeed, well, interesting! But if it is a rewire and you can connect the sensors and pushbuttons with a bus cable, then the professional choice is KNX. 500 manufacturers, 8000 devices, 100% compatibility guarantee, proven for over 30 years in millions of (commercial) buildings. Do it once and have peace of mind for 30+ years… I would recommend to check out the JUNG UK showroom in London, Clerkenwell to see and understand what KNX can do! Give us a shout if you need a hand with home automation bits, its definitely something that I think will take off more in the domestic section. If you want something that fairly friendly have a look at Shelly, they are a bit more than some of the others but work well. I have put 9 in mine currently a mix between dual power monitoring / relay and some dimmers. For a home automation system have a look at home assistant. The golden rule for home automation is it should be additive, i.e. shouldn't stop normal functions like light switches but bring extra features like motion sensor lights / when doors are opened / unlocked

Sorry, mate, but Shellys are the most amateurish way of doing home automation. If you want to have 30 years reliability & peace of mind, there is only KNX and it is definitely what I - as a professional - would recommend to any of my customers. It has been around since 1990 and we still service and upgrade installations as late as 1998. At the same time, the new components are absolutely awesome and have come down in price. Right now we are doing a flagship project where we have a pretty big sport facility with flood lights, irrigation, ground-source heat pump, 50KWp solar/ 20KWh storage, ventilation systems, extra boilers for showers (tournaments/events) and a restaurant inside the complex with a modern lighting (DALI). We do this 100% with KNX. And so should anybody who wants complete peace of mind with their smart home. P.S. Home Assistant can be used with KNX, but the difference is, that KNX still works perfectly without a server or central component (No single point of failure!) Every motion detector and push button directly talks to the actuator. If one device fails, all the others still communicate as if nothing happened. To rely on a Raspi or tiny server, especially one that gets weekly/monthly updates is not what I would like to give a warranty on. That’s why our KNX touch panels and logic controllers are normally not connected to the Internet. (Because we mean it seriously, when we tell our customers that they can rely on KNX to work for decades without problems!)

@@callumBee First of all, Shelly will become totally redundant with Matter. Secondly, KNX is a bit more expensive than consumer stuff, but a switching actuator channel is a mere 20 quid these days and a 2-gang push button with temperature sensor is around 50 GBP. Thirdly, KNX is for a new build or a rewire. You can not retrofit it without compromises. Having said that, there is often much less effort to daisy chain a bus cable to all push buttons and presence detectors, especially if you use DALI for digital lighting on each floor. If you compare apples with apples and take into account that KNX lasts for decades, it is often the more economic solution. But here’s the rub: UK sparks are the worst trained in Europe, when it comes to smart buildings. And I don’t know whether that’s down to customer demand or a lack of willingness to really get up to speed with digital electrics. You simply do not find enough people who can plan, implement or program anything else than stuff you find at Dixon’s or Lidl. So. No, KNX is not oversized. It is just too much a paradigm shift for the average village electrician to get it even quoted.

Loxone is at least a possible option for a residential project. What I don’t like is that it is proprietary (one Austrian company holding you hostage) and that the Loxone mini-server is a single point of failure. If that thing smokes, you can relocate into a hotel for a few days, until you receive a replacement. On the other hand we used Loxone a few years back as a KNX logic controller & visualisation and were very happy with it. Unfortunately the current version of the mini-server no longer supports KNX in the device itself and the gateway is now quite expensive and does not get the love and attention it should (obviously they want to sell their own proprietary stuff instead of cheaper & better standard components.) But surely Loxone stands head & shoulders above Shelly & Co!

I've been looking for a solution along the lines of what you're attempting for some time with mixed results. The modules you've bought come in various flavours but they're all based on either Tuya or eWeLink platforms. If you stick within their respective apps then they're ok but go outside and you get bogged down in issues and complexity. And you can forget about Matter/Thread/etc. However, they're the only devices I've found that have a high & reliable current throughput and I use them to control my water immersion heaters. I think the only other product that comes close is the Shelly Pro 4PM, but that's limited to 16A per channel.

Love the idea but don't like it being through an app. As the company running it can shutdown support for the app and fuses anytime they want, like what has happened to the original fitbit and alexa devices and many home "smart" devices. All my "smart" devices do not need 3rd party online servers to be accessed as they are all connected to my home pc or a raspberry pi

That’s exactly what all that app-based China and consumer crap has done to people thinking about smart homes. My company is installing building automation for nearly 25 years and until 5-6 years ago every single customer was excited. And every installation we ever did is still running, without any issues, because we rely on a professional, industrial grade standard called KNX. But now, with all these clueless nerds screwing around with IKEA style retrofit garbage, we have to convince people, that the technology we use for 25 years (that does not need a server, does not rely on a cloud and even does not need TCP/IP or the internet to run) is different from the self-deployed junk that ruined the neighbours house. Frankly, the term “smart home” has become synonymous with “place full of junk, that does not work, is unreliable and makes using the home a nightmare”. That’s why we’re back to calling our solutions “building autmation” - it is a bit more expensive, but it simply works for decades without issues and we have 100% happy customers. And you normally only use a (single) app to change room temperature settings, heat pump parameters, change timers or reconfigure lighting scenes. Everything else is either still push buttons or presence detectors.

@@maxking3 I think you will find its mostly American based companies that lock the usage of "smart" products behind their app and are usually bricked when you try to flash new software on them, while the majority of the Chinese made stuff you have the option to use their app it isn't needed and can use basic programmes to control cameras, sensors. Hopefully soon we can get voice controlled items that don't need Internet access all the time

No. It is not an industry standard, but a standard controlled by a private firm. The industry standard for buidling automation (ABB, Gira, Hager, Jung, Siemens, Schneider Electric, …) is called KNX, is around for 30 years and integrates 8000 devices from 500 manufacturers. In fact, Control4 allows you to connect to KNX natively. KNX components are also much cheaper than Control4 ones, as there is true competition across all device categories.

The majority of modern hotels, office buildings and luxury homes are built “smart”. But they don’t use crappy China components from Alibaba or Amazon, but industrial grade components with a 30 year old standard called KNX. I am still servicing and upgrading 25 year old installations, where the “project file” might still be on a 3.5” floppy disk in the cabinet. So I would turn the question around: At a time, where we have voice control, lighting scenes, timers, presence detectors and smart phones… would you seriously design a rewire to break circuits in the room’s wall like in the Victorian age, or would you control all switching circuits from a central box? Anybody who has ever fitted Ethernet cables into a home knows the answer.
