Ya your drift friend was totally right. Controlling rotational momentum is essential to drifting. Most people try to whip it into a drift while also coming off throttle which spins them so quick. Dragging the handbrake slows the transition and you'll realize you don't even have to be on throttle so quick after. Throttle can straighten you out if the rotational momentum is coming back towards straight. You could see him fighting it in the Corvette, moving closer to wall with short bouts of understeer.
