The take no BS attitude Waylon and others from his generation and of every musical style in his day should be something implemented by music today. I've always mentioned the year 2000 is about where music quality dropped off in mainstream, and pos Snyder's stint here verifies that, this was the beginning of the end for real musicians(playing musical instruments) and the respect they earned. It doesn't matter if someone hates Waylon music....thinks the Outlaw movement was a joke as mentioned in this comment section, all that sewage talk is irrelevant and off course to the take away which was demonstrated by Waylon. Tom Snyder and those alike in mainstream television since then is why you hear nothing other than talentless idiots talking into a mic with issues along with moronic backing tracks of bass repetition today, 20+ years later.

I can't speak for Tom Snyder, but I don't believe a lack of respect had anything to do with it. Show segments run long sometimes and, try as they might, things like this happen. Waylon made the situation worse by getting up and walking out, leaving Tom Snyder to twist in the wind. My understanding is that he just left, not giving the producers an opportunity to explore other options. Whether he left because he had another appointment or a show to do, he ultimately made the decision to be a guest that evening. He should have stayed to be a guest for fewer minutes that evening, or at least attempted to work something out. That's called rolling with the punches, and that's how you get through life. His appearance that evening was worked out between his people and the producers of the Late, Late Show. If he knew he'd be running late, he could have canceled earlier in the day and a fill-in guest could have been arranged for. It happens all the time on television shows, and no one thinks ill of a guest that can't appear because of a timing issue. However, this occurred just a few minutes before he was to go on; the adult thing to do then was to accept that you'd have less "on-air" time and stay. The take-away from this is that once you make a commitment to do something, you should honor it by following through. That applies to your friends, your family, your job, whatever it is. You're nothing if people can't rely on you to finish a job, or that you won't fulfill a commitment you've made to do something.

@@stever5887 I get your point but when you give someone your word and then you go against it and cut there time by 2/3rds that would be a line crossed in my opinion. I would have done the same thing. I can't say it's 100% the right thing to do but it's what I would do.
@stever5887
@stever5887 4 жыл бұрын
LAFOLLETTER--I think you missed the point. It was Tom's show; he could speak to any guest for as long as he wanted to, which is what happened that night. Waylon got up and walked out, perhaps thinking he wouldn't get the air time he felt he deserved at that point in his career. Maybe he was told he was going to get the full hour to talk with Tom. Maybe that was the only way the staff could lure him into coming on the show. We'll never know what pushed him over the edge, and it's not important. THE MAN STOOD UP AND WALKED OUT, leaving Tom without his next guest, and he never told the staff why. That couldn't have been the only talk-show he had been on, so he should have been prepared for the eventuality of not being a guest that evening. Savvy celebrities don't suddenly walk out like that, because it leaves a bad taste in people's mouths that can sink a career. You're written off as "difficult", and no one wants to have you on as a guest. Word of such behavior gets around fast; the industry only remembers you walked out leaving the host in a bind. Suddenly, you're not being booked as a guest on shows you really want to appear on because of it. It was the wrong move to make, and he may have later regretted it. But the corrective action would have required some groveling and a personal apology to the host, actions that may not have been in Waylon's repertoire. Since both men are dead, I guess we'll never know what may have transpired.
@Koda18
@Koda18 4 жыл бұрын
@@stever5887 you missed the point. He gave his word to give him x amount of time and he should have honored it. Simple as that!
@stever5887
@stever5887 4 жыл бұрын
@DakotaSutherland--Let's be clear: Waylon didn't get a firm promise he would be on that night; it was implied. Nor was he promised a specific amount of airtime. It's all free-flowing and what happens, happens. Dr. Laura (I don't know who she is, either) and Tom got on a roll in their conversation, and the time just slipped away. It happens on all talk shoes; it's part of the game, and you roll with it. Tom would have had him as a guest the next night, or the next time Waylon was in town. Again, maybe Waylon had had a bad day in general, had a fight with his wife on the telephone earlier, etc. We don't know what set him off, but he somehow got it in his head that he was being given short shrift that night by Tom, and that's all it took for him to walk out of the Green Room and leave the NBC Studios. We humans sometimes have unreasonable expectations about how an occasion in our lives SHOULD turn out, then lose our cool when it doesn't go according to "our" plans. In case you weren't aware, green is a calming color, and is used specifically to put guests at ease before going on. You may remember from childhood that your classrooms were probably painted green, too (mine were). Whatever the problem was, the Green Room wasn't able to do its job that night. You have to understand that Tom invited guests on his show because he liked them personally, liked their professional endeavors, the music or the movies they made or their personal beliefs were similar to his own (or not). He wanted Waylon there and he intended to have him come on, but events went in another direction once the show started. You don't get your nose out of joint and walk out because "you think" you're being given a bum deal. Tom was outspoken and probably scared a few people at the studios; he was loud, imposing, brash and not afraid to tell you exactly what he thought of you. I suspect the show was ended because they chose not to renew his contract for that and related reasons. His ratings were probably all over the map, but it's hard to maintain a consistent following when your show begins at 1 a.m. But that's why people liked to watch him; they knew they were going to get the straight story from Tom, as well as some interesting guests. My final thought is that I hope you will reconsider your statement that you would have done the same thing as Waylon. As long as you keep talking with people, there's a chance you can come to an agreement, or at least understand the other person's point of view. The moment you stop trying to find a way to salvage a bad situation, you've lost the battle.

I was on a flight one day maybe 20-25 years ago with Waylon and Miss Jessi. You wouldn't find two more polite and genuine people. They treated the flight crew with total respect, pleases and thank yous, and were delightful to watch, just so opposite from most of the divas in today's world. So while he may have walked out on the show, it's because Snyder totally deserved it.

If they told Mr Jennings he had a certain amount of air time and reneged, he had every right to leave. Since they didn't live up to their side of the bargain, he was under no obligation to hold up his. Good for him !

Tom Snyder was unorthodox. He had a great voice. He was erudite but he personified "winging it" . After Midnight was a tough slot. After the late show, it was TV filler. All the surveys showed an eclectic audience at best and a divided attention at least. So Tom penciled his guests a slot. I was young, still in high school but on Friday nights Snyder had rock and roll stars. But they wouldn't get on stage til 2am. I was lucky to meet a late night DJ at a Radio Station in Detroit who hosted from 10pm-2am.on Friday nights. I ran errands and searched for records.Cleaned the ashtrays and ran back and forth to coney Island when he had guests. Every Friday night I'd take the tunnel bus back home while hoping to see the guests on Tom Snyder's show. That was my first look at Ted Nugent doing Wango Tango on his Gibson Birdland....he was intentionally louder than Tom liked...made Ted wait...made me laugh. Oh, and my first hearing of Randy Rhodes with Comeback Ozzy Osbourne was on that show...i was stunned. Tom would torture the audience by small talking the guests with just mundane or awkward questions...it was awkward and funny...trying to be 'amiable' and working too hard at it....then Tom would spend time qualifying his first question by interrupting the guest...but he had a great voice. His guests needed to warm up to Tom's gregarious personality. He was unique. If Letterman was left of center with quirky and shallow then Tom was right of center with erudite and colorful. When I joined the army, I really missed Friday nights.

Waylon was a true country boy. Tried & true. He was told he was to have 30 Minutes by Tom Synder & that was not honored. Tom Synder learned something that day, honor you word to a country boy or you will pay. Waylon Jennings on his worst day was better than Tom Synder on his very, very, very best. Semper Fidelis Waylon, you are missed.
