OMG. You cannot help but love Gretz. Great interview Mr. Patrick. The world is so much nicer with #99 in it. Thanks for everything Wayner!!!

I was at Gretky's first WHA game at Indianapolis. We were so psyched that we got there like two hours early and were sitting in our seats about 20 rows up behind one goal. We were sitting there talking about about the game, excited and a young man in a suit came and sat directly in front of us. He just sat there by himself and stared at the ice. My buddy suddenly whispered "That is him! That's Wayne Gretzky." And it was! I remember we wanted autographs, but couldn't find an f'ing pen. After 5 minutes he got up and left for the dressing room I presume. I have thought about that moment a million times. He was sitting there deeply absorbed in his own thoughts. His first game. I wish I could have a chance to talk to him about that moment. I'll bet he remembers it. Kinda glad we didn't have a pen and just left him alone. And then the game. He was the most awkward skater I ever saw and yet he always wound up around the net. He never scored. I don't think even an assist, but goddamn you could see that he was different and special. It killed us when the Racers sold him to Edmonton.

Great story Ken because you witnessed a historical moment in hockey history . It's interesting that you recalled how Wayne was wearing a suit before the game . That seems to show Wayne's professionalism at the very beginning of his professional career . The main reason why I am taking the time to reply to your comment is because ... I appreciate that you were considerate enough not to interfere with Wayne's need to prepare for his first game in the WHA . Besides , do you really need an autograph ? People usually want autographs in order to have proof that they met a famous person . However ; if you have become a man of honour ... a man who is known by his peers for always speaking the truth ... then why do you need an autograph to prove you had that experience when all you need is to give your word ? Peace and good health to you ... Miles from Canada ... a friend of Walter Gretzky who is a man of honour .

Walter let me and my girlfriend at the time (1999) into his house. Spent an hour and a half with him. Such a wonderful man. Wayne had a great role model .

Yeah that’s called humility. It’s hard to spot nowadays because athletes are self promoting self indulgent braggart blowhards Athletes today aren’t taught this way Maybe hockey players but that’s about it Too much me me me i I i
