Just a FYI the reason you have metal shaving and depris in your filter is because your using the wrong oil you need oil with minerals in it for the wet clutch system and the rear diff all run off the engine oil

really liked your video Wayne,,I got to mention something I caught,,if you look back at your video,, look at the old oil filter,you will see a small o-ring stuck to the filter..that o-ring is on the shaft that your new oil filter slides on to..I guess it's to late to retrive it..and my Clymer manual states with filter change,add 3.8 u.s. qt's 10W40 ATV oil..thanks again Wayne

nothing wrong with using name brand company specific ATV oil. I pretty only use mine for plowing snow so I just need it to start in the cold. thus the 0-40 rating

how do i change the diff oil on my 99 suzuki quadrunner 250 sir
@tomashton720811 жыл бұрын
some synthectics will make the clutch discs slip, plus you missed the oil drainplug with the screen in it, my 250 has two filters, what your seeing in the filter might be the metal tube in the middle
@waynewinton11 жыл бұрын
I have had no issues with this oil slipping and I run a snow plow all winter long, infact its the only oil that will let me start the quad in -20 degrees on the first try. If W5-20 is in the engine it takes sevral minutes to start. This is the only filter I was informed about by the dealership.
@tomashton720811 жыл бұрын
Wayne Winton the 250 has a screen filter on the bottom plus the side cartrige hence it has two drain plugs, as for oil if the dealer say its okay your good to go, Im just pointing out some oils are not good for wet clutch systems, by the way I ride around when its 20 degrees and using 5-20 castrol when its cold as !@#$ wont hurt, but sometimes I have to use the pull start a few times, then hit the starter, 3 and 1/qts of oil in a 15 cubic inch motor takes a while to warm up too when its cold.
@waynewinton11 жыл бұрын
tom ashton Ok good info, Keep on riding and do what works for you. Also the temp here is minus -20 degrees or twenty below zero, not just 20 degrees big differance. With 0-40 she starts up every time on time with one push on the button. With anything els she won't hardly run.

Ive Been trying to get this exact atv running. I noticed only 1 bolt on the oil filter cap and the other 2 were screws. One of the holes is stripped. Not sure if I should tap it, or if there's a way to feed a new bolt through from the inside?

@@waynewinton you're changing it waayyy too frequently plus.polluting the environment. And you're using the WRONG type of oil. Your gonna disintegrate your clutches! AND TEACHING OTHERS THE WRONG WAY TO CHANGE OIL!
@robinnyberg17827 жыл бұрын
same thing basically on a 1999 king quad but you need a funnel and a hose to fill the oil since the space is to tight to get the oil can in there.
@rafthirty28136 жыл бұрын
Wayne Winton maybe you know more then me but i don’t think it calls for 0-40. Isn’t it 10-40? I’ve got an 02 which is pretty much the exact same machine. Also u can’t use synthetic with out Makin the clutch slip and possibly damage! I do know that cause if I could, i would definitely use synthetic. Also your old oil looked way too clean to change!! How many miles or hrs do you go between changes? With vehicles ie cars/trucks, you can go 10,000 miles between changing that brand of synthetic.
@mo-reesespieces906610 жыл бұрын
Great video. I do believe you got the numbers backward on the viscosity of the oil. The 40 would be your cold weight of the oil. That is why you have 30 weight/40 weight, etc. your 0w/5w would be your warm/thinner oil weight. I used to run 40 weight oil in my car until I read this 35 page report about oil. This guy raced Lamborghini cars and was obsessed about oil and in his report talked about motor damage and why more damage was done to the motor at cold start up. Oil has to get thinner for the motor to run its best. The thinker the oil, the longer it takes to thin out for the motor to run smoothly. My 96 quad runner is air cooled so thinker oil may benefit on the hot summer days but not sure if that would make a difference or not. Peace, Mo
@waynewinton10 жыл бұрын
Well first thank you for the comment. However It was to in mechanic trade school that I learned the beginning number was the cold weight and the second number was the running weight. Oil needs to operate over a large tempature range to work in the modern day combustion engine. So according to me and what I know the 0 would be the start weight and 40 would be the running weight. The cold weather is the reason that these oils exist beacuse regular single weight oil would be not operate in cold conditions as it would be to thick. Show me an credible article or link where I am mistaken here and I will be glad to learn something new.
@mo-reesespieces906610 жыл бұрын
I learned the same thing in auto shop. I will see if I can find the article. I may have to send it in email. I will send you a note when I find it. Peace
@michaelcyr8215 Жыл бұрын
lower oil weights for lower temperatures. A 10w-40 is good for cold weather (10) through hot weather (40). 0w oil is for very very cold weather. Here in Maine where winter starts for cars could be 20 below zero F require a 5w or 0w. It doesn't get all too hot here so 30w is good. Hence 5w-30. Newer engines also use thinner oils (0w) to reduce lost energy pushing around thick oil. They are engineered to work with the thinner oils without experiencing extra wear between metal parts.

Hey Wayne, May I ask you a few questions? I bought my KQ 4 yrs ago and still know very little about it. I've retrieved a motor ID number to have the dealer checked and see what yr it was made but they said that number was useless and told me that I should look for a VIN number. I have replaced a differential fluid with 75-90 Gears oil (idk if that is what it called for). Where is a drain for Rear differential, if any? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks
@waynewinton10 жыл бұрын
I am pretty sure that the rear diff, transmition and motor all run off the same oil.
@tomashton720811 жыл бұрын
I looked at the shot of your drain plug, the round plate with the three bolts are hard to see because you need to grind of more of the safety plate, any how behind that plate is the screen filter, all you do is remove and clean it with a new O-ring. Whats going on is the adapter plate that holds the snow plow covers up part of the oil screen cover at least thats how my machine was set up. I bought my machine used and it had a ton of leaks the crankcase seal (three dollar part) behind the pull start was broken, the crankcase vent hose was squished shut, and made the engine smoke etc, I had to replace all the axle seals, which cost me around 30 bucks and a half days labor(mine) my compression is 190

What do you use to take the spilled oil off your concrete driveway?
@waynewinton10 жыл бұрын
Quickly apply oil soak or kitty litter, then scrub with dish soap and citrus hand cleaner. Rinse with hose or pressure washer. This only woks for just spilled oil it will not work on old set in oil spots.

Yes gear oil and engin oil is the same. As far as shifting goes you will need to talk to someone who works on transmitions.

Please help I literally did the exact same thing and the damn oil is leaking out the front looks like the radiator is leaking it out. It doesn’t make any sense. So I leaked the oil out to see if it was in the engine and there was none in it. How could it of gone all the way to the front to the radiator?

@tomashton720811 жыл бұрын
The oil to not use is moly or graphite, the 300 280 and 250 are the same engine case, if you look closely at your drain plug, there will three ten millimeter bolts that go around the center drain plug, thats the cover for the oil screen, just like old air cooled VW,s, the screen is held in place by two bolts, the cover goes back on with the mark pointing towards , the front. You can go to the Suzuki ATV web site and they have diagrams of what im talking about. As for cold weather, I store my machine out doors and cover the hand controls with plastic bags, some times you have to use a hair dryer on the ignition switch, oh yeah the center bolt on the side oil filter is the oil presssure test bolt hole,, to check to see if your pump is working, remove the bolt, remove the spark plug so the engine will spin fast, and it wilL squirt out, when you crank the engine be sure to ground the plug wire, I grew up working on foreign cars that were made back in the 70,s so I may be a little old school about some stuff, for instance I check my valve lash when the motor is stinking hot, The other reason the engine is set back in the frame is because, the open space is needed for the optional electric cooling fan, that sits in front of the cylinder head
@waynehastings49446 жыл бұрын
wrong oil

I am confused. I have the same bike and that is NOT where you drain the oil from. I see you have cut away the skid plate to access this drain but there is a drain plug that is accessible without taking off any skid plates . why are you draining from here? this has me baffled. I took mine apart and i have the same drain as this that you show on the video but why use that one when there is one easily accessible?
@waynewinton10 жыл бұрын
That is just the one I chose to use. I did not see any eiser one to use.
@AsTheWheelsTurn10 жыл бұрын
ok just checkin. maybe my 93 is slightly different than the 95. i have the same drain you are using under the skid plate but there is one also a little further back that can be accessed thru the skid plate without removing it or cutting anything out., smaller bolt also. thanks or the video you did a nice job on it.

Just changed mine 92 from the smaller bolt I have no idea why there's two places to drain from either and notice the dealership or someone has cut out the bigger one
@rafthirty28136 жыл бұрын
Ben Barker on mine(02’), I drained it from the filter. Didn know there was a bottom drain, duh! Got it used of course.
@kirksachs5 жыл бұрын
That's not actually the proper way to drain the oil in one of these.... I mean yeah it works, but telling people they need to take the skid plate off or cut it is silly... The correct oil drain plug is furtherback close to center near the rear axle. You don't have to remove the skid plate it has a built-in hole for the drain....
@mycoolwill75944 жыл бұрын
That's just what I was looking at. They have a nice drain plug there, easily accessible. Wrong drain, wrong oil, no new O-rings on filter and housing. Maybe you should redo this video.
@dw49405 жыл бұрын
You're using the wrong oil! Synthetic will work but itll destroy your clutch!! Use 10-40 atv oil. You'll thank me later.
