The way things were done behind the scenes with Ric Flair and Jim Herd and how the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match was booked, more than anything else, truly symbolized WCW's transition from the NWA to going solo and how business would be conducted from then on.

It was kind of strange, it's almost as though WCW and WWF made a trade, WWF's older main event roster for WCW's midcard roster, they just basically swapped, and WWF made stars out of those guys while WCW just pushed the same old guys over and over.

I really am enjoying this series, I do think however a liiiiittle bit better pacing could be helpful. More than half of the video is spent building the story towards the event, then what feels to me like glossing over the actual ppv. Maybe like a 3 act structure type deal would do well? Pre ppv, the actual event, then ramifications of. Still love the vids as always chaps. Keep it up! 💜

The internet wasn't available to the public until August in 1991 (honestly I was surprised it was that early, AOL 2.0 wasn't until 1994 and that's when it really took off). The news of Flair traveled in more traditional ways. I wonder when the Wrestling Observer started having online content?

The point at which the dysfunctional behind the scenes management of WCW crawled in front of the camera and thus turned viewers away from the product, Herd's attitude was crazy bearing in mind that Flair was still WCW's number one draw at that time and thus one of the few performers who could hold the audience's attention. The whole card was simply a massive exercise in bait and switch and it seemed that Herd wanted to insult the fans by putting together one of the worse shows of all time, which is ironic when you think about the fact that WCW had the ability to produce good tv. Most PPV's that are bad are because the booking is nonsensical or the production values are lacking due to financial constraints, here what was visible to the fans was the fact that Jim Herd was clearly out of his depth.
@kurtvanderbogarde8402

In fairness, Flair has admitted that he was damaged goods in early '91, suffering from mental health issues and, in his own words "shouldn't have been champion at that point." The short haircut didn't help either. Maybe if Sting had stayed as champion and lost to Luger at GAB '91 with Luger turning on Sting in a babyface match and using Race and Hughes to help beat Sting.
