WCW / nWo The Great American Bash 1998 took place on June 14th 1998 in Baltimore, Maryland. In the main event Sting battled The Giant for control of the WCW Tag Team Titles. The main event also served as a nWo Wolfpac vs nWo Hollywood match seeing as both men recently joined nWo factions in the weeks leading up to the PPV.
Great American Bash 1998 is also noteworthy for it's semi main event. For the first time ever, Bret "Hitman" Hart teamed up with Hulk Hogan to take on another interesting tag team; Roddy Piper and Macho Man Randy Savage.
Elswehere on the card Goldberg takes on Konnan while trying to maintain his win streak, the best of seven TV title series comes to an end when Booker T squares off against Chris Benoit, and Chris Jericho tries to win his cruiserweight title back in a match against Dean Malenko.
This video is part of the Wrestling Bios Reliving The War series.

Somebody, I think Dave knows wrestling did a video about the streak and the final takeaway was that it was inflated so little that it didn't even make sense to inflate it at all. I might be wrong about who made the video buy I don't watch many wrestling channels so I'm guessing it was Dave.

@@Hyde_Hill I don't think it was WWE propaganda. I just think it was people don't like Goldberg personally, and a lot of people try to discredit the streak, but also maybe the number got out of control soon, and for some reason I remember the number being 173 and 0 for some reason.

I wonder what went through Bret's mind when Eric told him at random moments during 98, that he would be freelancing as Hogan's stooge in the nwo & that at some shows he would have to wear a Hogan t-shirt. At least ATM Eric was paying him well. Maybe that was Bret's only comfort....

@@simeonflake Having said that, you have to understand that this was just what WWE was doing to Bret when Hogan was there. He became the top guy only after Hogan left the company. At the time Bret's star was dimming with the rise of the Attitude era. While it's true that Eric misused Bret, though he DID eventually become champion. I just think that at the time there was too much NWO overshadowing everything at the time.
@rdrouynriv
@rdrouynriv Жыл бұрын
@@jayanxiety The natural spot for Bret was to be leading WCW against the NWO as some type of justice figure. He had a lot of natural sympathy built in after Montreal and WCW failed to capitalize on that. And with Sting jumping into NWO Wolfpac, there is a large void in the straight babyface role. But for Bret to be the top face, he would have to get put over by Hogan and apparently that wasn't going to happen. If they weren't ready to make him a top guy and put him in dream matches then why pay him like a top guy? Pay 3 million for a midcarder. Its no surprise WCW went out of business the way they were pissing away money.

The Guerrero matchup is a direct correlation to how the general fans saw pro wrestling then vs now. Back then, storylines and promos were weighted 75/25 to in-ring ability. Today it's the exact opposite, it seems. But the hardcore fans are the people who recognize that both are needed in order to have the best possible product.
@KingPK
@KingPK Жыл бұрын
Nah, the bigger casual audience still cares more about character than ring ability. It's just that the casual audience isn't as big as it was at this time and companies have to cater more to that "hardcore" crowd now.
@DLKnightstick1989
@DLKnightstick1989 Жыл бұрын
@@KingPK Okay, well I'm sure you probably know more about current wrestling than I do, as I stopped watching around 2011-12 or so. I still dabble now, but I don't go full in like I used to at all. But I definitely was a hardcore fan from 1996-2003 or so and characters were always the bigger draw. For me, having great in-ring workers was a huge bonus, but most people didn't care about that. It just seems to me that now the majority of people care more about the in-ring work than the characters. Or maybe that's simply the perception I get from seeing a show here and there these days. It seems 95% of every character is boring as hell and they treat every match like it's a WrestleMania main event. lol.

It can't be understated how well they pulled this off. Unlike a lot of other rivalries with a lot of matches to them (Orton and Cena comes to mind), I never got bored of Benoit and Booker. In part because of that tendency to learn, call back, and evolve the match. It really felt like two people going all out, taking it seriously, changing and adapting over the course of things. Unlike the Cena and Orton rivalry for contrast where I think the only evolution (unintentional pun) I really remember from it was when Orton tried to kill Cena with explosives in a fairly Looney Tunes moment. But otherwise they wrestled the same matches. The FU went off the same way, the RKOs went off the same way, etc.

I think the streak should only count for televised matches, because even on wrestling databases you could fake the non-televised ones, if you weren´t there to watch it live and they did a lot of house shows per year. Like someone already wrote in his comment below how many wins Goldberg would have with TV only, if this would happened to the streak.

I remember my dad buying this PPV for me and a few of my friends in the neighborhood when I was 11 years old. Thanks for posting this video!

At 30:56 Sting kicked the Giant in the jewels which was why he went down. The camera angle was very poor, but you can still see the foot raised to the crotch.
