What are Ohio's self-defense laws?

Anytime you are dealing with a law on self-defense as a lawmaker you better have specific guidelines, regulations and a clear definition of what self-defense is to the general public because if you leave that law as an open interpretation and allow for the public to basically decide what self-defense is then that is like waiting for many many accidents to happen.

There is no way to clearly define self defense as the circumstances can be very widely in every case. There are way too many variables in a self defense scenario than what a legislature could possibly define.

My state had concealed carry laws for almost 3 decades and the determination of getting that license was class time to discuss the issues of when it’s a legality issue, when you should make the choice to use lethal force, when/where you can’t possess the weapon, and just general safety. After completion you send in your paperwork to the state with fingerprint and get an FBI background check, 2 days of class and half a day on the firing line. With that more people were already educated about what LEO’s are enforcing and less problems came from it. Now a constitutional carry state, half of the population already knows the rules. Even the “Castle Doctrine” from that good dude protecting his neighbors home being burglarized, while the 911 operator just told him to ignore it.

It’s totally bizarre how any state andor any country expects regular citizens to know laws, regulations, etc that even the majority of police don’t know. Why is there a police academy? Why is there a state bar? Why do lawyers of all levels and specialties spend millions of dollars to goto prestigious law schools? So that THEY can be TRAINED to KNOW, REMEMBER and UNDERSTAND ALL the laws, statutes, regulations and procedures. NOT CITIZENS. Do you go into your doctors office KNOWING and UNDERSTANDING every single medical procedure, term, practice, drug, tool there is in the examination room? Not unless you’re either A. A doctor/nurse yourself or B. Grew up around/live with a doctor/nurse. Why would anyone expect a non-trained person to understand or even know things they were NEVER trained to know? That’s insanity. It’s expecting human beings to have a sort of alien inherited hive mind where we all share each others thoughts and memories. And no. You are NOT expected or even trained to know self protection laws or practices at ANY POINT of your life. Not even if you apply for a conceal carry permit (which you don’t need to even buy a gun). So OF COURSE citizens aren’t “aware or understand” the laws - WE HAVE NEVER BEEN TAUGHT THEM! There is NO CLASS in any school at any grade level for non-law aspiring students that teaches us the legal system. You know what teaches us the legal system? Law and order. Cops (the show). And KZbin. That’s it. So speaking down to citizens for not knowing things YOU SPECIFICALLY HAVE BEEN TRAINED FOR YEARS TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND is deplorable and a DISGRACE to the legal profession. It’s NO DIFFERENT than a rich person talking down at a poor person, as if they weren’t even human. If any legal person wants regular citizens to KNOW AND UNDERSTAND the laws, start creating FREE and REQUIRED courses before people can even enter middle school. That’s your BEST bet at changing mentalities for the future.
