I sympathize with Rose because I understood her character so well. When you come from a home that criticizes your every move, you end up making foolish mistakes when you get a moment of freedom. They did a great job of portraying this.

"my whole childhood would seem impossible to you, but I survived, and so will you"...Bates is so good at relating to folks for a stern tough man, he's got a real pronounced sense of empathy. A lot of the nobility come to rely on his strength and he always provides it without ever overstepping the mark. It's only natural the Anna and John would want to protect Rose and as others said, she was a hot mess for the first part of her character's development.

Rose's parents had fallen out of love for each other, and they had lost all their money and was about to sell their family home. I had a little sympathy for Susan for a while, but those stunts she pulled with Rose's wedding, first with those pictures of Atticus and the stripper, then getting up and blabbing about her and Shrimpie's divorce at the ceremony, ended that. But she's not meant to be - I think that's the beauty of the show, that you're not supposed to idolize these characters. During that scene I wish I was one of the ladies at the party so I could go find her and give her a big sisterly hug. I just felt so sad for her, she's such a delightful sweet person, who's just trying to find her own way. Yes in the beginning she got into all sorts of mischief, but with a mother like that, I can relate. My parents are great but were super sheltering and over protective and drove me to rebel at times.

I find it scary how related I feel to Edith and Rose. Rose's mother is always critising her for every single thing she does, whether it's good or bad, whether she did someting well or if she fucked up, she's still and still critised, starting from petty stupid things, going to serious one. On the other hand there is Edith who has ALWAYS been overlooked by her family, no matter what she achieved and did, it wasn't nothing worth for her family to pay attention, everybody was always looking at her older sister, even if she needed their attention more at some point. Dudes, if I could choose to hang out with some fictional characters, I would definately do with these two! We could have the most stereotypical ,,lady's day'', go to some great place with jazz to dance and then later in the night get drunk at home, talking gossips and dramas about our families unfair treatment!

For some reason I do not know why, I never really liked Rose... Ok, her Mother was almost her enemy (a completely bitter person) but she always seems a bit rebelious with no cause... She was up to her time, but just as a party girl. For me, Sibyl was revolutionary in every aspect: shining, vibrant and responsible for her decisions.

And so she was a party girl. She's young, full of life and bright ideas, a stark contrast against her impertinent mother and their decaying castle. Considering the time in which she lived, yes, she might seem rebellious without a cause. A Lady smoking? Going to secret parties? Partaking in prohibited affairs? Marrying a Jew? Yes, she looked like she was rebellious, but when you strip the Edwardian biases from her life, you'll find her to be a relatively normal teenage girl trying to live a relatively normal life. She is rebellious, and she is a party girl, and that's what makes Rose, Rose. As viewers, I think we have the obligation to look beyond what is shown to see what is hidden. At least, this is how I watch Downton Abbey.

@@antoniabanoczi-gg8te yes she learns ! She first has to break free and break a few rules before she can understand why rules are helpful in life. She grew up with so many rules, it would have maybe suited to another personnality but she is a free spirit and a young soul. She may not have the same kind of intelligence as Mary but she is bright in her own way i think. By that i do not mean smart, but brilliant ! Distinctive. She brings a spark of life where she goes. Everyone's commenting about Lady Flintshire, yes, I understand it's due to the title, but if you're naming the worst of all of the show, I'm just quite perplexed Green, Bates' ex wife and for heaven's sakes, that slimy serpent just right there, tainting Anna's reputation and constantly manipulating Tom till Blessed Mrs. Hughs came to the rescue; are all unmentioned! Lord Merton's sons and daughter in law were nasty, as well, with all that scheme almost killing/murdering their own Father for Money and Inheritance Keeping Isobel Away, too, leading to heartbreak in his deathbed hadn't Dear cousin Violet intervened! Personally, it'll always be the likes of Green for me. That was traumatizing. Anna did not deserve it not an ounce bit. And such vile beasts and vermins exists even to this day and I want nothing but justice be taken to hand.

Couldn't Robert and Mary shut up .. and just support Edith for once!? Why did he never say a word about how immature and stupid Mary was with all her shenanigans .. now that Edith writes a column and he disapprove of it .. he says something. She is being independent and free .. and because she is not hiding it or doing something tabboo .. she is to be criticized and discouraged!? eh .. I always wondered how could Edith hold it with them leaving such cruel comments to her face.

Mary saw everything through class, & she didn't consider Michael classy enough for their family & believed he was just using Edith to get aristocratic & wealthy. I'm not saying any of these thoughts were good, no, they were absolutely problematic but it also indicates that in this specific scene, Mary was just protecting her sister & family, though in an extremely unpleasant way. And Robert! Omfg! His reaction to Edith writing from the very beginning annoyed the hell out of me. Wanted to punch him for that, & not just once🤬
