Although a depressing heatwave has evaporated most of our desire for any sightseeing, the icy Buna River renewed our energy for a visit to Mostar. After we found the riverside camping spot in Blagaj and we could leave the van in the shade, we figured taking the local bus to Mostar gave us the flexibility to go as late as possible in the day to avoid some of the heat.
The town of Mostar is one of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s most popular destinations. With cobblestoned streets, old stone buildings, and its beautiful bridge spanning the picturesque Neretva River, this small town attracts thousands of visitors per year. Seeing Stari Most, the Old Bridge, is the highlight of a visit here, but the charm of Mostar extends well past the span of this bridge. In 1468 the region came under control of Ottoman rule. In 1566, under the orders of Suleiman the Magnificent, the wooden bridge was rebuilt in stone, and this famous bridge stood for 427 years. This stone bridge was a masterpiece when it was built and it is said to be one of the most important structures built during the Ottoman era.
Before we departed Blagaj we also HAD to climb the hilltop to the old fort and at the source of the Buna River see the Blagaj Tekija - a Dervish monastery built at the base of a cliff..

Wonderful show.. But if you go to Serbia, go to the Zlatar mountain and there you have the Zlatar lake like a dream, and then you have the CER mountain, which is untouched nature ❤️🥂 Greetings from Belgrade

This is some of the recommendations we received: Belgrade Novi Sad Zlatar mountain and lake Vinca and Lepenski Follow the Danube from Ram to Kladovo. You will pass three recently renovated fortresses from the 14th and 16th century, Ram, Golubac and Fetislam in Kladovo, the oldest urban settlement in Europe, Lepenski vir which has a great museum, and the beautiful and, for Europe unique, Djerdap national park, which the river runs through. You will pass where the Danube is the widest, 6 km at Golubac town, and shortly after where it is the narrowest at the Iron Gates. You will see Europe's largest stone sculpture, the head of the last Dacian king Decebalus chiseled out on the Romanian side, who lost his kingdom to emperor Traianus of Rome. You will pass the Roman fortress Diana before Kladovo, and just after Kladovo you will see the foundations of Traianus' bridge still standing after 2000 years. Kladovo has a small but excellent archeological museum about all the rich historical remains of the area. Follow the Danube southwards towards Negotin and you enter one of the best wine areas of the Balkans, excelling especially in red wines. The area from Veliko Gradište and Eastwards is the Vallachian region, where people speak Romanian, especially in the villages. This multicultural environment is very noticeable in Vojvodina, north of Belgrade where you have many nationalities living mixed or side by side. Depending on the area there are Hungarians, Czech, Ruthenians, Ukrainians and other minorities living there. So language, food, traditional clothing, architecture, churches and traditions vary from village to village, from town to town.

Bosnia is so beautiful it will be a challenge not to stop elsware. Yes, you have already seen places and had your share of wow effects in other Balkan countries so you are becoming a bit resistant to stop at every attraction place. But even if you are a bit oversaturated with those magnificent views and historic places and friendliness of locals there are still things you want to repeat over and over. Just one example: ice-cream. Not that you never head one before but always another scoop is another experience you dont mind repeating. BTW Cockta free is the same taste but "free" of sugar. It is great idea to give Millie a break and use a local bus to main destination. In and out and also you can have a cold beer in between (since you are not driving that day). Smart. Have a great weather on your next trip and have fun as you always do so you can pass it over to us followers...

You are very brave going into 8 degree water. But how did you know the temperature?

It's incredible how cold the water is here! We didn't measure the temperature but it's apparently a constant 8 degrees throughout the year we've been told by locals.

@@WeWillNomad If you plan to go to Serbia and then into Hungary, ask someone from Serbia to check the queues at the border at amss' homepage, the Serbian Automotive Association. The Hungarians often take a lot of time to check cars, combine this with a lot of traffic during season and you'll wait in line for several hours. One solution is to cross into Romania first as the queues are much shorter there and then continue towards Hungary.
@WeWillNomad

That's good advice. Unfortunately too late for us. We got stuck for almost 2 hours at that border . 🤦

@@WeWillNomad there are also several crossings into Hungary. Usually the smaller ones are quicker.

None of the Western Balkans are part of the Schengen area nor the EU. With Romania and Bulgaria joining Schengen very soon, the Western Balkans is one of the few places to do the shuffle. Super easy to spend 3 months around there though.
