@@SpencerBMcDuffy I agree, but saying things like "net worth is overrated" and "net worth isn't valuable if..." are misleading statements. Just like a Lego creation, it's hard to take apart something that took you so long to build, but to make something better, it is what's needed. For their spending, they need to find and agree on the right balance of enjoying life while not sacrificing their future potential.

The most ethical thing to do in this case would’ve been to ask for more information before they decided to throw their low-quality opinions into the world. The reason I say “low-quality” is because they had practically no basis to form them. I do like Dave’s sentiment toward debt. Blaming the guy with just part of the story! If all of his net worth could be in his house and 401k. He still might be planning on save for kids college and developing non-retirement savings to protect his family. If that his biggest problem you are lucky and should be happy you married a great provider.

Dave is stupid. What if these guys are in their 60s and their house is worth a half a million? The "million-dollar Networth" is not much, in fact it should be redefined -- a millionaire should mean that you have more than 1 million in retirement and savings. Who knows the wife could be a spender. They can be in the poorhouse quicker than it takes to accumulate a million if they're careless.

You're somewhat right. But what you are referring to is called being cash poor. Though the idea behind net worth is that you can just sell your assets and would have 1 million dollars. It has nothing to do with the liquidity of your assets. Though liquidity is very important. And diversity of your net worth is also highly important as well.

@@marquestanderson1388 4% withdrawal on 1 mill in liquid assets is 40k, 4% withdrawal on 500k is only 20k. Neither is a lot of money to live on. Too many people in his everyday millionaire group count their 400k/500k house towards as what makes them a millionaire.

A million is not enough net worth to live lavishly in my opinion. We were worth a couple million before we even bought my first brand new car. We both came from a poverty childhood, mine due to irresponsible spending, my husband was due to sacrifice to save and have some worth later which we both followed that pattern. Now having several hundred thousand dollars in the bank it's still hard for me to really splurg. Don't get me wrong, we have very nice things, new vehicles, a home we built and expensive, quality new furniture with no debt but we aren't going to drop a $100 tab dining out but yesterday I did give $100 to a recue and rehab for horses. Everyone's priorities are different. And when it comes to money, my husband and I are not opposite. We are still working hard to grow our net worth and saving for retirement. Having financial freedom and security is a huge deal for me obviously because of my childhood. Wasteful spending isn't easy for me to do.

A million dollars, especially in Chicago, means they are still poor. Maybe he has a much better grasp on their finances, and it sounds like he is also the major breadwinner and responsible for the finances... they may have a Million dollars net worth but $950k of that is there home in a high tax state. Oh, and the house from "Married with Children" recently sold for nearly a million dollars.

There are people so OBSESSED with saving money, that it’s almost pathological and many I’m sure follow Dave religiously. They become so obsessed that, when they are young, they FORGET TO LIVE LIFE. Then, as they get older, they have more and more health problems-often ignored in youth-and they become broken down millionaires. I’ve known 4 different couples in this situation. It’s sad and pathetic-and totally preventable if you HAVE PERSPECTIVE in your life. Life life, people. You’ll be dead a long time…
