As fellow kiwi I recommend the following places to live: Christchurch (gateway to the South Island, cheaper property, seasonal and humming central city) or Tauranga (warm climate, stunning beaches, the Mount, and handy to Central North Island and Auckland). As a NZer who moved to Australia I just want to encourage you to prioritise your wellbeing in the weeks leading up to the move date as it can be soo stressful even if you're looking forward to it. Try and have a few days to chill before you leave to spend time with family and friends. Can't wait to see you both thrive in your new home!

I came here directly from watching Alex's video on this. Great news, so happy for you and congratulations. I saw somewhere on his video comments that you were interested in living in the Wairarapa area. but no definite destination. Not sure what you are planning to do work-wise? Having moved to Wellington in the late 70's and living there my most of my life, I have just recently moved to the Waikato region, specifically the Cambridge region. Can i just say: OMG the difference in the climate is STARK - like unparalleled. The Wellington/Wairarapa distiricts is quite bold and extreme. Due to it's geographical positioning it is soo windy and I'll say again, extreme. The difference up here in the Waikato is how much warmer it is, more stable climate, not windy, just normal weather and (specifically in Cambridge, it is landlocked so even less wind) and the temps are much warmer. It is central to so many amazing destinations in any direction within a 2 hour timeframe etc. Whereas as much as I love Wellington, it is really only one direction to go anywhere and you repeat the first 4 hours of travelling any time you do go away before you really begin your journey away. Also I hear you talking about growing your own food etc. Let me assure you that if you try to grow your own food in Wellington you will need a greenhouse. To harness the sun and warmth and to stop wind damage and cold damage! Here, in Cambridge I am able to grow any vegetable or herb I want and am sooo happy about that. Good luck with the move and I look forward to welcoming you both. :-) By the way, the Waikato is the best region for the equestian lifestyle!!

I just left a comment on Alex’s channel too but I can really see you both in the Wairarapa. You’ll want to make sure wherever you choose to live has good cell phone reception so you can have decent internet. Many farms in NZ (like high country stations or really remote farms hours away from the nearest town) don’t have great internet, a lot are stuck with 90s style dial up. When you do move to nz, this might change when you move but you need to get an isolation thing before you get here, so they know you are coming and can make room for when you arrive. I don't know all the info but I'm sure there will be information on the internet about it.

Carrie, did your previous trip to NZ alay any concerns about moving away from the US and your family?. It’s a big move and I’m sure you would have had some fears about wether you’d fit in and if NZ was what you’d been told. Easier for Alex obviously as he’s a kiwi, but so often reality doesn’t meet ones expectations and can be hard to figure out what you really like and what you dont. It’s a major difference to go on holiday compared to working and general day to day normal boring stuff. I hope it works out for you both.
