Our new project car is a 2016 LR4 SE SDV6 with a major engine failure. The car has only 64000 km (40000 miles) on the clock. Does it have the notorious snapped crankshaft?

Hello C & V! Reflecting on Landrover, LR design and its commercial self interest, we, the public are persuaded by “gloss” and psychological subtlety to purchase LR products. LR products are overwhelmed by electronic dross, almost all of it superfluous, which guarantee’s huge and costly maintenance bills for most. Why the hell are so many attracted to it? I do admire your technical skills, fault analysis, instrumentation to assist, workshop homemade test kit, real time fault analysis, accurate measurement. I'm going with a seized alternator or other pulley driven by the serpentine belt, we once had a Discovery with a supposedly seized engine, I removed the belt (with a Stanley knife) and it started straight away. The alternator had seized and the engine would not move as in your video. Big respect for offering the car back if it's a minor issue, my neighbour once offered me a car for free that wouldn't turn over or start and a helpful mechanic told them the cam belt had broken. All it needed was a new starter, one hour and it was fixed and happy neighbour again

My uneducated guess is a faulty oil level sensor showed correct oil level when in fact the oil level was low. 120km/h for an extended period lead to oil starvation which in turn ceased the engine. 😊 I too feel bad for the original owners, it looks like they have looked after it. I guarantee that you have way more positive comments and love for your content than the haters could even imagine! My Sunday doesn’t even start until I have watched your latest episode ❤

Hi Vera and Christian. LR time, what can I say. Excellent work thankyou. My theory about the engine failure is a little complicated but I will explain. I am certain that in Swizterland the mall crawler was contaminated by mice. Probably quite a few , more than 10. Once inside, being bored with a working landrover they took it on themselves to reek havoc. Once this decision was made all they required was a 36inch stillson, and waiting for the correct moment ( 120kph on the Mway). they lobbed it into the path of the rotating crank. I am quite certain that the mice have scarpered but you will find the stillson. I am prepared to wait for the autopsy, so you can send me a sticker. All the best.✌

Your channel just gets better and better. Now we have a quiz (with a most valuable prize!) which will test if we’ve been paying attention or just counting omg’s. Ok, so I believe the new mall crawler has a broken crank with the immediate failure mode (the one where Martin & Steve, Manchester United supporters, were chatting about their team’s performance rather than concentrating on heat treatment and fillet rolling) and the crank has snapped due to a manufacturing defect. The broken crank has wedged in the block which is why you can get no movement on the crank bolt in either direction. Also this would lead to an immediate stall of the engine. The engine is too new to have lubrication related failure, even using 5W-dumbass. Were this case here is a likelihood chips would be visible in the filter (you found none) and it is possible impending failure would be shown with an oil light on the dash (together with a ‘boing’ ??) Watching with interest to discover the reason for failure. Ignore the FB comments, they are just bitter and twisted and upset they’re not the ones with thousands of followers. I promote your channel whenever I can especially when there’s a post “I’ve bought a D3/4 what do I need next” (this is not an attempt to influence your judging decision, honest) Keep up the good work, it’s pure gold. Stuart (President of the Artic Frost D3 owners club)

I have been watching you guys for just over a year now and I must say you are the best and regardless of what others may say from the UK and how you fix the LR, ignore them, you're doing an outstanding job and your English is excellent, you guys are so funny when repairing one of the LR's.👍👍😂😂

I think it must be the crankshaft that snapped, preventing it from turning as its locked up inside the motor. Thanks a ton for all the great videos

Changed to 5w-40 Magna tech last week - much quieter starting & running but the major improvement is crankshaft anxiety levels now at all time low.

That's not anxiety your feeling, more like misplaced excitement. Which is why I love my 3, the best driving trucks out there with the thrill of arriving home with no bings or bongs or dash lights lighting off like a Xmas display.

Hello BigAde, looks like you won our patch and sticker. We got the engine appart and it is a "simple snapped crank". Can you contact us outside of KZbin? You find my email address if you go to our Channel description. We will show the details in the video on Sunnday. The word "snapped" is very accurate because it happened instandly, within on revolution. We did not find a single chip or bearing wear. The word "broken crankshaft" as in other comments does not describe the issue as good as it covers a broader range of issues. Hope to get an email from you. Christian

Even before I finish watching this video, I have had to pause it to make this comment. I just heard on the video that there are apparently forums on Facebook etc that say you do not know what you are doing and that you are a clown Christian and a child! I am from the UK and I am appalled by this, this is completely incorrect, I was trained as a mechanic (many years ago) when everything was done by hand and not computers, I am in awe of the work you do and only wish I was physically able to repeat it on my own LR4. Keep up the excellent work as you provide excellent entertainment to a huge amount of people who appreciate you.❤

I had the same symptoms on my discovery 4 two weeks ago, no chips in the filter and completly seized engine. I guess crankshaft failure between the crankpin and main bearing or crankpins. Assuming it snapped, further rotation forced crankshaft parts to move apart which led crankshaft parts to ram against crankshaft beds and yokes and seizing it completly, most likely deforming the beds. In this case side bolts of the crank yokes may shift or extend from the engine block which you can see before disassembly. Also you may find broken or cracked rocker arms depending on relative rotation of crankshaft parts. Total damage: broken crankshaft, deformed engine block, and possible damage to engine heads(valves, rocker arms, camshafts...)

I wish it has an easy fix, but reality tells us it's defenetly not an oil, overheating or timing belt related problem, because oil starvation lead us to bearing material build up in oil filter, defenitly not overheating, because we have coolant level sensor, 2 or 3 coolant temperature sensors, oil temperature sensor... No coolant or oil spill marks in engine compartment. In case of timing belt failure you will definitely hear valves striking against pistons. It would be loud :) , and can't completley seize it.

I've been waching Discovery problems for the last 15 years. Different driving behaviours lead to different engine problems. I guess the owner of this Discovery was very calm and fuel saving driver. Such type of driving means high torque on low RPM. Never seen snapped crankshaft on such low mileage with aggresive driving behaviour.

Really enjoying your channel, I love the fact you have a two post ramp at home 👍👍 I'm also in the automotive trade I'm going to go with a diagnosis of a crankshaft lockup, due to shell has picked up due to lack of lubrication then overheating the metal shell and thus moving out of position and then locking up the crankshaft......again can't wait to see you next videos, I'm from the UK thanks again Dean

Great project for us, thank you. I think piston seizure may be the cause. Overheating probable cause. I apologise for any UK social media group being disrespectful in any way to either of you. You are lovely people and provide us with with interesting and humourous content. There is also the inspirational aspect that shows how much maintenance can be done with some thought and planning. Respect to you both.
