I daily a 2000 TT coupe (no rear spoiler) with over 105k miles. They are way more reliable than people think. Lots of owners drive theirs regularly with 200k+. My usual problems are plastic interior pieces not holding up due to the sun and heat here in California. Mine is stock but TTs are easily modded too. The MK1 enthusiast community online is really supportive. Fun cars, the TT.

Since when was it the most-hated roadster? They actually were loved when the mk1 was released. Maybe they’re hated now because “car enthusiasts” would rather have the R32 or GTI, but I wouldn’t generalize the TT’s appreciation over that.

pelleper A front mount intercooler and a simple reflash brings it up to 280 horsies. For European standards, that’s quite respectable. And the 20v engine has heaps of potential with aftermarket mods. Stock? Yes it’s slow, but you don’t buy a car with the 20v to keep it stock

Just a tip, on the air vent controls, if you press the "return" button and the "UP" button at the same time, you will unlock the ECU stats view, and you can check the engine temperature, sensor values, etc ( you have to use the temperature knobs to select the program to go up and down, from 0 to 89. I just put mine on collector's insurance (not a convertible, but a coupe), and I can't wait to drive it again. One caveat about the 225hp TTs is that the rear brake calipers are only shared with the 20th Anniversary Edition and 337 GTIs, so if it's been stored for a long time with the emergency brake engaged, you will probably have to rebuild or replace the rear calipers.

There was a 3rd engine option. The 3.2 L six naturally aspirated, putting out 250 hp and a lot more torque with the DSG paddle shifted gearbox and Quattro handling. Mine is the SLine version, with a better suspension and rear spoiler, larger discs, and 18” wheels. It’s not the fastest thing from 0-60 in 5.7, but it’s faster than most from 50 to 100. No RWD car can keep up with the Quattro DSG on twisting roads, partly because no manual can shift as perfectly nor as fast as that dual auto clutch. And the 3.2 has a much richer exhaust note.

A fantastic car and and amazing review! I've owned my nimbus gray 225 Quattro for over 4 years now - if I may offer a word of advice: If you don't mind eventually replacing every single vacuum line (due to age and the added stress/pressure), I FULLY recommend an ECU reflash. Doesn't need to be custom - stick to reputable, keep-it-safe tunes such as APR. The SECOND I put my foot down after the tune the car immediately felt like that's how it should've come from the factory. Do yourself AND your TT that favour - it's ABSOLUTELY worth it, with virtually no downsides (except for slowly uncovering weak links in the system, brought on by cracking/aging rubber/plastic hoses). Also, VERY IMPORTANT - that Quattro differential needs its fluid changed. Roughly every 2-3 oil changes. I have taken my car to MULTIPLE mechanics that said "Nah, that system is self-contained, it's sealed for the lifetime of the vehicle" - it's not. Most of the time they're looking at similar engine/chassis designations, whereas MOST 225 Quattros have a Haldex that DOES need oil changes. They're slightly more expensive than a regular oil change, and need a specific tool, but if you can't find a mechanic who'll do it (and you've confirmed by VIN that your car DOES indeed require them) do yourself a favour and buy the tool, do it at home - it's not a difficult job. Your soft top latch is also going to start failing eventually - dealership quotes something like 1100 dollars to replace it - it's a mechanical fault. The spring sags with time, which just means when the soft top "hook" latches it's not pushing the metal tab (top left part above the windshield) to contact the metal to close the circuit - I cut a small piece of cardboard and literally fixed it for a penny. Also consider upgrading the battery with an AGM - Audi TTs of that era are little gluttons when it comes to parasitic draws, and our battery tray is a sort of odd size, where most batteries that fit won't provide a decent CCA. Look into Optima red tops, Somebody mentioned either the 34R or 35R should fix, and give you over 700 CCA while providing a massive warranty. Also, very much would appreciate if you know a reliable place that does instrument cluster repairs on those cars - my speedometer reset itself incorrectly, so now while stationary I'm doing -38 mph. Great if you're driving with a passenger that's terrified of high speeds, not ideal for anything else! I know there's plenty places that advertise it online, but I was wondering if anyone has a place they'd swear by/actually had a really good experience with, as that's the only -real- issue I've ever had with the car. CHEERS! Enjoy your TT ownership, and GET THAT ECY TUNE. Also, HIGHLY recommend a 42 Draft Design cold air intake PLUS 42 Draft Design 3 inch downpipe. You can argue all day that it's overkill unless you're going with a bigger turbo, but anyone arguing that hasn't heard what the car sounds like with those mods. EASILY worth 1000 dollars for the exhaust note you get - it's another one of those "this is how it should've been from the factory" scenarios!

Would love to go stage 1, haldex controller, blahblahblah but half the stuff on this bucket doesn't work at relatively low mileage. not worth the pain in the ass of constant upkeep when a mildly boosted AND reliable Civic would blow the doors off this thing. I'm sorry, but have to jump in again because I heard something that always makes me smile. People are hooked on the idea of AWD being the only option in places that gets some snow (granted, Colorado doesn't just get some snow, but a lot), or at least FWD, and RWD is taboo for those people. I beg to differ, though. Tires and light weight are the biggest factors for being a good snow car, not the drivetrain. A well-balanced RWD with snow tires will always be a better choice than a not so well balanced FWD or AWD car on all-season tires. Let's also not forget that snow-handling is not only about getting a good start from a stop, but turning and braking as well, which goes back to weight and tires.

I'm looking at one for sale. The guy says it's got a subtle thumping or thudding noise coming from the rear, but it still drives super smooth. Any ideas about what's the matter, how much costs to fix ? Any questions I should ask before I give $3500 to the guy? It's got 144,000 miles. And is the 1.8T Hope to hear from someone soon 🙏🏻

My better half has one , black with exactly the same seats ( sunburn orange ). Have to say it it is a great little car, but it requires a constant attention. Have taken it apart couple of times, replace the roof, repaint the wheels. I guess is getting old

You’re not a real car guy if you truly hate the Audi TT

I see more hair stylists driving Jeep Wranglers than Audi TTs. Yeah, I said it.
