+The Red Buffoon Well to be honest he stalled again right after he finished cranking the engine on that hill. That is what gave him that reaction. I thought the same thing to be honest. It's the AWD and the extra weight of the car with the hard clutch. I have an AWD car. It was my 2nd manual car. I noticed the clutch was super hard and the car would stall out immediately if you didn't give a lot of gas. If you did give it enough gas ,but released the clutch pedal a little too fast, it would launch! When I first got it, I stalled at every single stop light as soon as it turned green. I would then launch the car after I finished cranking. I lug it a bit every now and then...

The TT is surprisingly roomy considering how small it looks from the outside. My family has one (manual 180hp 1.8T Quattro, 2004 model IIRC) and we also used it when moving. You can even fit all four wheels _in_ the car - I know this because I've tried. I love that car. Looks good, sounds decent, and it's slow enough that you can just floor it whenever you want without worrying about crashing or going over the speed limit too much, but still fast enough so it never feels slow. It's quite comfortable, too. In other words, it's a great sporty daily driver.

Great review. I drive one of these and I love it. I often find myself toying around with the idea of buying a different car, but then I sit inside of my TT and everything just feels so right. However, I would recommend buying the 225hp, 6 speed, dual exhaust version. It is just the better package. With a few small (but pricy) modifications, it really wakes up and performs pretty well. Is it a track weapon? No. But it is fun, safe, fuel efficient-ish, rips through snow and has a surprising amount of space for a quasi 2-seater. And looks, I got looks for days! Mr. Regular hit the nail on the head when it comes to the TT when it was new. The reason to dismiss the TT now is more that, like anything on the MKIV Golf platform, it gets weird electrical issues if you look at it funny or live in any place with "weather". It also (rightly) gets some flack for it's stock (lack of) performance and quirky (read: bad) handling when it's pushed. I know someone who had one of these and it tended to understeer right up until you lift a little and then BAHM! it rotated in a panic-inducing way that required you to jump back and the throttle to save. Sure, that just means there's a learning curve, and you could learn to adapt your driving style to it...
@RadioMuse19 жыл бұрын
+RadioMuse1 But why should such a thing actually act worse than it's Golf (particularly R32, since that was also AWD, but was known for feeling more planted) and A3 brethren? Maybe it's just the styling that convinces us that its; supposed to be a "sports car" which results in higher standards. I guess I wouldn't know since I've never driven a MKIV Golf or A3 from this era. I just know the TT was chippy.

I owned a 1st gen 225 for literally 30 days. Bought it second hand from a dealer, full service history, 80k miles, freshly serviced, all boxes were ticked that should be. 3 weeks after owning it, the oil pump failed and despite immediately turning the engine off after seeing the low oil pressure warning light, the sump was full of metal. For short amount of time it worked, it was super fun. But there are so many things that can go wrong with that 1.8T engine and the quattro system buying one second hand is an absolute minefield.

And even though I've owned more powerful cars since and it's been over 10 years since I sold it, I still miss that thing. Such a fun, tight, quick and yet comfortable and practical car. And the interior with all its attention to detail is such a nice place to be. Oh, and yes: The rear seats are a joke ... unless you're shorter than 1.60m or so. If you are, the seats are more comfortable and roomy than what you get in a 911 - at least that's what my mom said after I had to cram her in there... :D

1st gen Audi TT owner here...yeah that short first gear paired with the 4wd makes taking off SMOOTHLY tricky. It's like you're telling yourself "Okay, first gear is small, I don't need much throttle." Then you stall it, because you're powering 4 wheels rather than 2 and the engine makes power around 2,200 Rpm.

I like the Audi TT. But I'd never buy one. Not because of masculinity, but because everything I'd want it to do, a Miata would do better. And for everyone thinking "yeah but AWD..." If I want and AWD sports car, I'll get a Subie/EVO, because that will do AWD better. The Audi TT is a good looking car, and an okay performing car, but if you want it for having fun, a Miata is better and cheaper. If you want it for performance, a modded Miata is probably still cheaper and performs better, while a WRX/STI/EVO is also better performing. If you want it for having fun while maintaining mild usability, the WRX/STI/EVO is much more usable, what with a full backseat, and still holds higher performance (albeit at a higher cost, yes, but there's other options here for fun that hold higher functionality than a TT). I like it, I like it quite a bit honestly. It's just...kinda pointless.

+Steven Zettel Yeah it's the old sheep in wolf's clothing dilemma. The 3.2 was quick enough in a straight line but the added weight made it handle like even less of a sports car.
@wonderbubble39809 жыл бұрын
***** That would be why I never said 4wd.
@wonderbubble39809 жыл бұрын
***** Actually, they're AWD. 4WD is a bit different, used for offroad applications, and must be turned on or off by the user. A full rally version might be 4wd (I believe there was an EVO Rally that was true 4wd), but otherwise, the cars are AWD. A 4wd car is nearly undriveable on the street in 4wd mode, due to all four of the wheels turning at the same rpm, meaning that when you try and turn, the wheels on the inside are forced to turn at the same rate, even though the shorter turn radius means that they need to be turning at different speeds. This results in the inside wheels being forced to spin too fast, and thus are made to lose traction, making turning with 4wd engaged extremely hard and very slow. This is also why welded diffs are okay for drifting, but bad on the street. AWD runs a LSD, electronic clutch, or other such system, to drive all four wheels, all the time, but still allow the rotational speeds to change as needed around corners. This is what gives vehicles like the WRX/STI/EVO, and others like most Lamborghinis, such an advantage in corners - all four wheels are putting down power, and all four wheels are holding traction. This is also why they perform better in poor traction situations. On a RWD/FWD car, if one drive wheel hits, say, a patch of ice, you've lost 50% of your drive wheels and power, and a huge portion of your traction. And when that wheel comes off of that patch of poor traction and regains traction, it could do so harshly, catching the car and either overcorrecting, or sending it in whatever direction the car is now facing. with AWD, you've only lost 25% of the power and drive wheels, and in vehicles with Traction control, it's able to adjust the speed of the wheel so that it doesn't catch near as harshly when it regains traction. If you still doubt, the WRX and WRX STI are, in fact, AWD. www.subaru.com/vehicles/wrx/models-specs.html (don't worry, it took me forever to get the difference between 4WD and AWD down as well)
@wonderbubble39809 жыл бұрын
***** You're...partly correct. EVO and WRX are full time AWD, which is different from 4WD. 4WD is made for offroad, as explained above, and provides equal power to all four wheels, in equal amounts, all the time, usually through locking differentials. Trucks, jeeps, hummers, etc, these are examples of 4WD - which you can turn on and off. So in 4wd mode, as explained above, they're nearly undriveable. You must turn 4wd off, which puts the car to just RWD. AWD and Real Time AWD (or whatever some companies choose to call it) are slightly different. EVO and WRX are AWD, a vehicle like Honda's CRV for example is usually RTAWD. Again, I explained how AWD works above. AWD and 4WD both result in power going to all four wheels, all at the same time - this is true. However, AWD and 4WD are *not* the same thing. The ways that power is supplied to those wheels is totally different, resulting in completely different systems, both in design, function, and use. Here's some more links, showing what I tried to explain above, and in my previous comment: bfy.tw/2v4c WRX specs: www.subaru.com/vehicles/wrx/models-specs.html Subaru explaing 4wd vs AWD: www.subaru.com.au/car-advice/awd-vs-4wd 4WD vs AWD differences, video: www.digitaltrends.com/cars/whats-the-difference-between-four-wheel-drive-and-all-wheel-drive/ 4WD vs AWD differences, article: www.motortrend.com/news/4wd-vs-awd/
@wonderbubble39809 жыл бұрын
***** Actually, the Lancia fits in with the definition of AWD, as I stated above: "AWD runs a LSD, electronic clutch, or other such system, to drive all four wheels, all the time, but still allow the rotational speeds to change as needed around corners." The Lancia runs three differentials. Yes, there is an exception to most everything, such as rally cars, or vehicles built to rally (or other race) specs, as they are often very different machines from how the regular version comes from the factory (though still, many of these fit in as technically being AWD, not 4WD). A fair number of them have complete drivetrain swaps from stock, though what all is changed would depend on the class you'd like to run in. However, within a discussion that was assumed to be comparing one normal road car to other normal road cars, my point still stands - the EVO/WRX are both better AWD vehicles than an Audi TT. The original definitions still stand as well - AWD is a system that produces power to all four wheels simultaneously, all the time. While still allowing, through either mechanical, electrical, or other systems, the wheels to rotate at different speeds. In comparison, 4WD also produces power to all four wheels simultaneously, all the time. Where it differs, however, is that it does not allow the wheels to rotate at different speeds. This is done through a mechanical system - the transfer case. In short: AWD allows wheels to rotate at different speeds, 4WD does not. This is nothing new from what I've been saying, and I'm beginning to wonder if you actually read everything I type, or if you simply come across something in the first paragraph or two and find issue with it, forgoing finding the explanation explained beneath it.
