The original Audi TT is underrated -- and beautiful. Today I'm reviewing an original Audi TT to show you what it's like -- and I'm showing you all the quirks and features of the 2001 Audi TT. I'm also driving the TT to explain what it's like behind the wheel.

I have a 2004 (since new) with relatively low miles (convertible season is shorter in PA, so I have a winter/bad weather vehicle too), but due to an accident it's not quite as perfect. This one is great, but I don't care for the color -- personal preference. I do like the baseball glove interior, it really stands out; mine has the 'plain' leather in blue to match the exterior (and the blue top as well).

As a historical note, the Ford Ka had that wheel arch look (New Edge design) which was released in 1996, as well as the Ford Focus which had wheel arch look in 1998. Of course, the Audi TT concept of 1995 had the wheel arches too....but wasn't in production until 1998. I always loved the Audi TT. A timeless design.

I have a 2002 225 Quattro Roadster. 45,000 miles. My favorite car ever..0 engine problems. It has been reliable (for an 18 yr old car) but parts are not cheap. I LOVE all the neat styling details. I’m 6’5” and fit just fine. It is a comfortable car to cruise in. Mine doesn’t have the cool baseball interior though. With the windows and air deflector up you can stay warm even on cooler days. Not the fastest or best handling car I’ve ever driven but it is a very enjoyable cruiser and still fun on mountain roads. Plan on enjoying it as long as I can get in and out of it.

No offense to anyone who owns one, I mean if you like it, great! But it's basically just a convertible GTI. Same chassis, with that same too-high firewall and dashboard (for a sports car). Thanks Doug for the memory! I´ve been modelmaker for Audi Design in Ingolstadt in this era. Worked on the two showcars (Frankfurt Coup / Tokio Roadster). Had a great time with the team! @@enriquemartinez2962 Well, I remember very exactly when Thorsten sayed, how difficult it was for him, to put this great sketch from the showcar into reality. There are restrictions by laws for homologation all around the world, when you distribute your product worldwide. And on the other side, you have many internal things to solve, like aerodynamics, body framing and platform, production process (stamping plant, paint shop and part tolerances for example). And finally the expense! All these things are the reason, why it is so extremely difficult, to keep the magic of a showcar from the stage to the customer. This is the real struggle in car design! Especially, when the public expectations are so huge! As I remember, Thorsten was not involved into the two concept cars in 1995. It was Freeman Thomas, who did the instructions then. If been not in Frankfurt that year. Unfortunately…

Fell in love with the TT when I first saw it in Germany/Switzerland border. It truly reminded me of my first love the Porsche 356 Speedster with its iconic "Bathtub" design. Bought an 02 TT 225 roadster last year and it's by far my favorite toy. Other classic roadsters I have feel like you're doing 40, look down to see you're doing 70. The TT has a ton of pull and torque, bang through the gears to 4th, think you're doing 70, look down and you're doing 40...it's my favorite feature and hence she gets the most attention from me. Better feel than my other toys and no tickets is a HUGE +.

I have 2 or 3 years on Doug, this car came out while I was in my mid-teens. It's amazing how fresh it still looks today, but it's hard to contextualize how novel and alien it was given the general rounded boxy approach of the 90's, and especially Audi's previous design language. When weird things become classics, it's hard to remember how weird they were when they came out. My father would buy an R4 a few years later which, given a family of five with three teenagers, I can certainly understand, but I remember going with him to the dealership simply to look at TTs. As for the baseball stitching, it's not bad in itself, and A for effort, but it feels like Dennis Hopper cooking in your minimalist stainless kitchen with marble countertops; both are fine things, but it's a bit dissonant!
