I have a 2004 (since new) with relatively low miles (convertible season is shorter in PA, so I have a winter/bad weather vehicle too), but due to an accident it's not quite as perfect. This one is great, but I don't care for the color -- personal preference. I do like the baseball glove interior, it really stands out; mine has the 'plain' leather in blue to match the exterior (and the blue top as well).

Thanks Doug for the memory! I´ve been modelmaker for Audi Design in Ingolstadt in this era. Worked on the two showcars (Frankfurt Coup / Tokio Roadster). Had a great time with the team! By the way - Peter Schreyer was chief designer that days, making the last desicions (very cool guy!), but executive designer for exterior on the production car was Thorsten Wenzel (have to mention ... because his job was „underrated“, you know ;-)).

@@enriquemartinez2962 Well, I remember very exactly when Thorsten sayed, how difficult it was for him, to put this great sketch from the showcar into reality. There are restrictions by laws for homologation all around the world, when you distribute your product worldwide. And on the other side, you have many internal things to solve, like aerodynamics, body framing and platform, production process (stamping plant, paint shop and part tolerances for example). And finally the expense! All these things are the reason, why it is so extremely difficult, to keep the magic of a showcar from the stage to the customer. This is the real struggle in car design! Especially, when the public expectations are so huge! As I remember, Thorsten was not involved into the two concept cars in 1995. It was Freeman Thomas, who did the instructions then. If been not in Frankfurt that year. Unfortunately…

I think Doug's score on the acceleration was spot on. I've owned an S2K and currently own a TT. Yes, the S2000 is only slightly faster, but they're both different cars and the weight difference is substantial. The S2000 is RWD that only weighs 2800lbs whereas this AWD TT weighs nearly 3500lbs. The S2000 has a 2.0 or 2.2L VTEC engine that revs to 9000 or 8200 rpm w/ more hp versus this 1.8L Turbo AWD that revs to 6800. Even though the S2000 accelerates only a few milliseconds faster, the way it accelerates may be more exhilarating.

Great references to other cars that used these distinctive design elements. So glad you reviewed this specific grey + baseball combo...it was shockingly modern (and fun) when it came out. I’m dismayed why you only gave an 8 in styling - but gave the S2000 a 7. The Honda is crisp but it doesn’t come close to the bauhaus(?) shape of this iconic design. IMHO this car (especially sans wing) is a already a classic and will still look cool in 30 years. I'm from Romania and one year, coming back from seaside, there was a traffic jam leading up to the freeway (there's only one freeway linking Bucharest to the Black Sea coast). It was so bad we spent almost 3 hours to cover less than half a mile. Everyone not only turned their cars off, but if there was "progress" in moving forward, we just pushed them along a few yards. Instead of getting angry people were just chatting, having a smoke... So yeah, perfectly doable in a jam to turn the car off. And the steering lock doesn't engage unless you remove the key from the ignition barrel, not sure why he mentioned that.. The brakes aren't disabled either, they just revert to manual operation and you need to press the pedal harder to compensate.
