Never heard of your channel but I like it. This was a good review.

I listened to the BBC R4 dramatized version of this. That was phenomenal. A 7 hour audio sounds like those long drab monotone readings.

Looks like everyone in my bookclub, including me, rated this three stars when we read this last summer. I gotta say though, Cody, I think you convinced me that there was more here than I remembered. I may reread the next time I examine 1984 and Brave New World just to compare and contrast them all better than just with memory. I read a digital version, which also included old-timey photographs depicting scenes, including some of the pink slip scenes which was…shocking and a tad uncomfortable. I was certainly not expecting it. And I agree with Brent that the literal glass houses were so depressing. I also wondered why they even bothered with the privacy curtain feature at that point. You have seen and been seen by everyone doing everything else, is there really a point now?

Accumulator tower, I think was the place where D-503 first time felt like he had intrusive suicidal thoughts, when he was looking down while on a tour as a child. Eventually, I feel like this is planted by authour as the seed for D-503 irrational destructive behaviours.

I read this as my bed time story so it was perfect for a snooze, it was amazing I can’t wait to read 1984!

Just read the Aplin translation. Enjoyed it somewhat but not as much as the two major books it gets lumped in with. I could see how it influenced those. It influenced the ending of Orwell’s book for sure and is quite a nightmarish world.

What were the two other books it came packaged with?

Aaaah, dudes... The Accumulator Tower extracts electricity from the sky! He does mention it at some point, I'm sure. It powers all of the machines in the city. I imagined it like a giant lightning rod or Tesla coil. I wonder if there's a flaw in the translation if you find it ambiguous. I don't speak Russian, but in German 'Akku' means a battery, and would bring to mind something to do with electricity. In Russian, the word 'аккумуля́тор' can mean a 'battery', but I don't think it usually refers to an electrical battery in modern usage.

I recognize the look on Brett’s face. At one point he will get some sleep. I’ve read 1984 so I’m probably good to skip this one.

Haha well glad the episode helped! Sometimes I wish people would have told me to skip a book. Also it’s Brent, btw, not Brett
