Couple notes I've made about ATW bikes from your trip - probably don't buy a dr650! Don't ride tubes. Tubeless are easier to plug. Maybe bring a tube or two for back up. Friction plates are handy to have. As is duct tape. Carry fork seals. What an adventure you two took.
@daviddonne7333 Жыл бұрын
think you are reaching some invalid conclusions. Off road bikes have spoked wheels because they have greater elasticity in absorbing shocks and will not fracture like cast wheels. With most spoked wheels it is necessary to use tubes (some BMWs excepted). That's the way it works, As a low cost bike DR650s have no direct competitor and have some pluses like having a carb which when you get bad fuel can be easily dismantled and cleaned, Try doing that with an injector!!!!

I think anyone contemplating a long motorcycle journey outside their own country could learn a lot from following your attitude when faced with obstacles, breakdowns and bureaucracy. You just have to go with the flow and leave your Western mindset at home. I remember the way you handled that accident in Borneo. I thought at the time: "These blokes are not going to buckle, no matter what comes their way. They are open to whatever eventuates and ready to work their way through it.

@coloradoridgerunner7912 жыл бұрын
Hello from Colorado another great video!! I really like it when you have mechanical issues you show how you overcome them. I'm assuming that was diesel fuel in those bottles not diesel oil. People used to drain the oil and fill their car engine with diesel fuel and let it run at idle for a little while and then drain it and refill it with new engine oil. They did this to get rid of engine sludge, this was mostly back in the 1950s & 60s when they used this method to remove the sludge buildup. This is the first time I heard of anyone operating a gas engine with just diesel fuel and no oil for a extended period of time.
@Northandleftabit2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, but no surprisingly this is Diesel Engine oil and even more surprisingly the bike ran perfectly on it. Apparently you can do the same with big old Harley Davidsons too, we were very skeptical at first when we read this but had no option so gave it a go.

Thanks for sharing. You guys are making an epic trip. Here are some BFE repairs for places where you can't find parts. Seal the spokes up with Shoe Goo or even silicone sealer, then run tubeless. That would stop all those flats or at least make a simple Tubeless plug only take a few minutes for a flat repair. Almost nothing goes wrong with fork seals. Learn how to clean them on KZbin. Most neck bearing can be repaired by simply throwing away the ball separator and adding a couple extra ball to the races. Good luck out there.

Ufff... the head bearings are far worse to have be buggared than the fork seals. Smart choice on the bikes by the way, fancier steeds with USD forks would have been useless start to finish and dumped their oil at the first sign of dust. And don't be too hard on your fuel filter... she did her job it looks like to me! Also, also ... vodka and snickers! Yes please. Enjoying this fellas!
