In my opinion there is a very easy to miss detail in this episode that I find really significant. In the heart to heart between Toph and Zuko, in the end she hits him. When Zuko asks why she did that, she answers "That is how I show affection". It doesn't seem much, but when you look back at the show, she has been doing that consistantly, for instance when Katara said she was very pretty in Tales of Ba Sing Se, or when Sokka told Toph about his mother and how Katara filled that void. Both times Toph hits them in the end. I personally think it's a awesome glimpse into Toph's personality...

When they read the poster for the play at the start of the episode it said that the story was compiled from first hand accounts of witnesses including "a surprisingly knowledgeable cabbage merchant." I think they kept the gang as the main characters of the play because they're caricatures meant to discredit them to the public. Aang was emasculated and stripped of his emotional intelligence and airbender wisdom. Katara was oversexualized and turned into a "preachy crybaby". Sokka was made to look as if all he thinks about is food and makes silly jokes. Toph was a big buff guy because that was the only way they could explain the amount of power she has (thus also stripped her of her softness and the way in which she weaponized her disability, which is part of why she is so amazing in the first place). Zuko was a whiny teenager, with none of the reasoning behind his decisions or his anger issues. And like Suki said, this play made it seem like the gang "lose a lot" and barely make it out through sheer luck. They are shown as neither clever nor skilled. It's meant to show how annoying and worthless they are, and how in the end they don't stand a chance against the Fire Nation.

And the thing about that Toph...originally Toph was supposed to be a buff guy like this before they turned the character into a girl. 4:05 That looks *exactly* like the poster for Book One of Avatar: The Last Airbender. 16:45 Yes; you seems to have missed at the beginning when they say the playwright is from the Earth Kingdom. ---------- Katara was not confused because of Zuko: there was never any romantic connection between them on the slightest. She had deep trauma due to losing her mother, thinking she had also lost her father, and having held Aang's corpse on her arms before bringing him back with the Spirit Water. She was 100% sincere: she couldn't date him as long as the war lasted, because she was afraid she would lose him too; they have been soulmates since at least the Fortuneteller episode, though on rewatching, their connection seems to have been instant on the moment they first met.

@meursaulty66723 жыл бұрын
To me the drill was sort of a forced conflict, just to add a hiccup to their first minutes in Ba Sing Se. And it doesn't make sense from the fire nation perspective because they didn't even bring an army, just the engineers in the drill.
@artistfloor93 жыл бұрын
@@meursaulty6672 They did bring the army. There were tanks driving alongside the drill, but they were mostly relying on the drill because the last time they attacked the city with the full force of the army, they lost. And the conflict was important because it played to the theme of threats coming from within. The drill seemed unstoppable, but the Gaang took it down from the inside. Ba Sing Se seemed impenetrable, but Azula took it down from the inside. You could even argue that Azula was inspired by the Gaang when she saw how they took down the drill. It all ties together.

It's important to remember that while Aang and Ozai have not personally interacted, Ozai is more than just an evil dad and brother, he's also the leader of a fascist regime, so he is as much a representative of fire nation imperialism as he is a terrible father. It's also worth noting that while Ozai has not personally done anything to Aang, Ozai does carry on the ideology that originally wiped out Aang's people. I think to appreciate the conflict between Aang and Ozai it's beneficial to think of what they represent respectively, because Aang is not just a victim of fire nation fascism as an airbender he is also the avatar, a person whose duty is maintaining balance, you could interpret a fight between Aang and Ozai almost like the world itself is trying to stop Ozai.

Yeah I can see your point about the ending of the play but also the Fire Nation is one that values strength so I think it would have had to end like that too lmao. They also seriously dumbed down Team Avatar so IDK if they wanted to make them the protagonists in a heroic way but more like, look at these dumbass people. I do think the play version of the Fire Lord is a bit too mustache twirly, they could have made him seem more like a cool, well thought out guy and still have play Aang die. I always find the applause at the end and the zoom in on the Gaang so unsettling because it's like... those people have been indoctrinated to HATE them so much. They were even bored when the Gaang was 'winning' in the drill portion.
