Despite how perfect Azula was, in her eyes almost all of the people that mattered chose Zuko over her - her mother, Mai and Ty Lee. And to lose to someone who she saw as inferior isn’t only enraging, it undermines the perfection she worked hard for and the fear she inspired in order to win admiration and loyalty of her followers. As long as she used intimidation and force to get her way, she could never earn true loyalty from anyone. To her, that would be enough to make her go crazy.

The art and animation improved throughout the series, but three moments really struck me in this episode l, and they were all Mai’s eyes. First when she glares at Zuko after he locks her in the cell, second when they lock eyes just after she releases the gondola, and third when Tai Leigh leaps to her aid. All of those eye shots were just the artists at their best.

I remember being in shock when Mai saved out team, especially because she was willing to sacrifice herself, apathetic Mai loved more than the fear she had for Azula, and I would love to point out that Azula was never as pissed as when Mai said that. Ty Lee's choice had me SHOOKETH, but I think it was coming, the show does a great job pointing out that fear just get you to a place, and Azula only had that with her "friends".

EXACTLY! If you slow down the 1.5 seconds just before Azula falls, you can see it. Mai's eyes? Surprised shock! Azula's eyes? Surprised shock! TY LEE's EYES? Surprised shock! ("OMG! Did I just DO that?!?") It was a surprise to the audience, because it was also a surprise to Ty Lee!

I don't think it was really a choice. When we first meet Ty Lee, she looks taken aback when she sees Azula. She's not happy to see her. Azula then has to threaten her into "volunteering". Later, when she sees Mai, she runs up to embrace her. The implication is clear: Mai is her friend. Azula is her bully. So it's not just that Mai loves Zuko more than she fears Azula. Ty Lee loves Mai more than she fears Azula. I think Ty Lee was scared in that moment because she had never been brave enough to stand up to Azula not because she had to decide.

Tai lee wants you to THINK she's an air head. She's been making sure Azula think's that's the case since day 1. She knows how dangerous azula is, that's why she left the circus, to make sure they weren't in danger. Same with Mai. In her first episode, it makes her look heartless when she wouldn't trade for her brother, at azula's suggestion, but she knows it's riskier to cross azula than anything else.

Yup. Cuz the episode was nothing about them, til the end. And we'd seen a lot of scuffles between them. But they have been building this up slowly, with the way Azula treats them. Mai in particular had moments where she showed displeasure with Azula (yelling "Leave me alone!" at the beach, the side-eye when she interrupts here & Zuko, etc.).

I always fascinated by Azula and Mei relationship, I always imagine they grew up together because of mei's family background in the fire nation. A commoner would cower in fear with Azula but she stands toe to toe with her like an equal. For such a side character they always have this deeper but "makes sense" mysteries!

Low key Zuko hasn’t lost a fight since he learned to rechannel his energy into something other than anger. The way he bends is different now, he’s pretty much a master. Even with Azula here, she didn’t cream him as much as she usually would have.

I can't believe there's no reaction to the ultimate joke of this episode! Guard: I'm here to protect you. Mai: I don't need any protection! Zuko: Believe me, she doesn't. Zuko and Mai (Maiko) are the perfect pairing. Mai is calm and restrained, patient, and loyal, and her love for Zuko is unconditional and she would do anything for him; she needs, however, someone to encourage her to express herself and find her drive and fulfill her intentions. Zuko is driven and determined, fierce and unrelenting, but also loving and kind, and hellbent on pleasing the people he loves; however, his abandonment issues means he needs someone reliable and stable by his side. Thus they perfectly complement and strengthen each other: by far the most stable couple on the show, being together since childhood; as I understand, one of the reasons Zuko couldn't really give Jin a chance is due to his love for Mai -- though I heard that is better explored in the comics. Although the Zuko/Katara crack ship is popular, due to their superficial complementarity, it's evident in the canon, and confirmed by the authors, that not only do they never feel anything towards each other at all, but that if a relationship would happen between them it would necessarily be toxic: both Zuko and Katara are very self-righteous and stubborn in different ways (apparently both have a choleric temperament) so they would just hurt each other and fight. Side note: Margaret Thatcher is awesome. Don't compare her to Azula. Did you know #notAKidsShow is from am awesome channel calles @TheNormies? You really should check them out.

It's pretty clear on rewatch that Mei and Ty lee are friends, but Azula is not. It's also what makes the "I'm a people person" so ironic. She knows one thing: fear. It's what her father and grandfather uses. It ultimately made them lose son, wife, and life but she cannot see that. She cannot see all the side eyes and glares that her "besties" share. She cannot see how Ty Lee's "change of heart" to get out of the circus is just appeasing her and far from permanent, or how the ties that Mei an Ty lee have with her are the same as the ones the Dai Li had with Long Feng before they betrayed him. She's a calculative person, as Mei implies, but she ignores a bunch of variables to make her truly efficient.

You'll have a great time at either! NOLA is denser with a more party-forward feel, Chicago is rad as hell, prolly needs a bit more planning. You're set either way! Also, if you do go to NOLA and you're there on a Thursday, get your ass to Vaughn's in the Bywater. They have line band juke nights that are straight up the best parties I've been to on Planet Earth.
