You're not in the wrong for yelling at people on the bus because you were trying to get off. It's common sense for those wanting to get on to let people get off first before getting on. The superstition regarding pigeons if it poos on you in general, it's considered good luck! In Japan, it's good luck if it's on a shoulder! Having originated in Russia, it's thought to be good luck as the chances of this happening are low. And the San Francisco hill is Duffy's Hill. It was named for Michael James Duffy, a Tammany Hall Alderman who built 26 rowhouses there. Funny you mention SF, as it was the home of many cable car accidents because the cars had to quickly accelerate and decelerate at this point. The corporation that ran the cable cars had a 24-hour guard stationed at the base of the hill by 1937 to watch over incidents. The Cloisters was designed by the architect Charles Collens, who also worked on Harvard's Swartz Hall in Cambridge! It holds about 5,000 works of art and architecture, all European and mostly dating from the Byzantine to the early Renaissance periods, mainly during the 12th through 15th centuries. The four cloisters are the Cuxa, Saint-Guilhem, Bonnefont and Trie, that were acquired by sculptor and art dealer George Grey Barnard in France before 1913 and moved to NYC. John D Rockefeller Jr purchased the museum site in Washington Heights in 1930 and donated it to the Metropolitan in 1931 and opened in 1938.

I’m just starting the vid so idk if he touches on it, but with Omny, you pay for your first 12 rides and the rides after that are free for the rest of the week, Monday through Sunday. So you are capped at $33 a week, which is what the old 1-week metro card used to cost. This past Thurs-Sun i took 17 trips and i wasn’t charged for the last 4.

I'm seeing a lot of comments about how we should've been fare capped, so to set the record straight: to my understanding, because we rode an express bus, that $6.75 didn't factor into the math for the fare cap (omny.info/faq/fare-cap), so the total fare shown at the end is accurate. Do correct me if I'm wrong though!

You are correct, the cap applies to subway and local bus fare. 12 fares at 2.75 each = $33 cap (amount of a 7 day pass) in a 7 day period.

The historic building you see at 0:21 is the Battery Maritime Building! It was built from 1906 to 1909 and designed by the firm of Richard Walker and Charles Morris. It was inspired by the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle and is the only remaining ferry building in that style in Manhattan. It was built for ferries going to Brooklyn, but today it's been used for Governors Island ferries since 1956! If you go inside, they have Governors Island-themed art called Not for Nutten (a play on the fact the island was once called Nutten Island) which is a nod to the island's past like The Turtle being the world's first submersible in warfare and used by George Washington, or boxing gloves for Joe Louis because he did his Army physical there. We used their ferry service back in Winter of this year because we wanted to go to Governors Island during a time it wasn't crowded, and we managed to pick a comfortable day because it ended up being in the 40s! Other people were on the ferry but for the most part, wherever we went on the island, it was to ourselves so it was perfect.

Yup, the Hudson Palisades are absolutely wonderful! The basalt cliffs are the margin of a diabase sill, formed about 200 million years ago at the close of the Triassic period! This was formed by the intrusion of molten magma upward into sandstone. The molten magma then cooled and solidified before reaching the surface. Water erosion of the softer sandstone left behind the columnar structure of harder rock that exists today as the Hudson/NJ Palisades! And wouldn't you believe at one point in time, streetcars were able to tackle these cliffs to serve the people who lived on top? The North Hudson County Railway used everything from a huge and long elevated trestle, funicular wagon lifts, and an elevator! Tackling the cliffs this way was an engineering feat, especially for the time! So the deal with Little Island is it was planned in 2014 and opened in May 2021. It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and largely funded by Barry Diller and Diane von Fürstenberg as well as some funding from the NYC and state governments. Diane von Fürstenberg is a Belgian fashion designer who was once married to a German prince of the House of Fürstenberg (Swabian nobles) named Prince Egon. She is now married to Barry. Barry on the other hand is Chairman and Senior Executive of IAC (a media holding company), Expedia Group, and founded the Fox Broadcasting Company in 1986.

Even if you didn't go to Marble Hill, I'm gonna give you the lore on why it's Manhattan anyway!: Marble Hill may have a Bronx zip code, Bronx area codes, and is attached to the Bronx, but it remains an exclave of Manhattan! Marble Hill was once part of Manhattan Island, but it became its own island in 1895 as the result of the Harlem Ship Canal. Then in 1914, it became attached to the Bronx as the result of the Harlem River on the north side of Marble Hill being fully diverted to the canal. The name of Marble Hill was conceived when Darius C. Crosby came up with the name in 1891 from the deposits of dolomite marble underlying it known as Inwood marble. The marble was quarried for the federal buildings in Lower Manhattan when New York was the national capital in the 1780s. As for the slab or the UN Secretariat building of the UN Headquarters: According to architect Wallace K. Harrison, the marble walls not only allowed the Secretariat Building to be seen as a monument, but also reduced competition between staff members who wanted corner offices. The Secretariat's architects had wanted to design the massing as a slab without any setbacks. This contrasted with older buildings, such as those at the Rockefeller Center complex, which contained setbacks corresponding to the tops of their elevator bank.

Another great video! Fort Tryon Park is probably one of my favorite, if not most favorite, NYC park, because of all the hills and stunning views. Absolutely visit the Cloisters when you get a chance - like literally, make a trip to NYC just to visit it. The 190th A train station is the closest, and for an extra challenge, you can forego the elevator and take the "scenic" route - use the long ramp out to Bennett Avenue, then turn right and walk down to W. 187th Street, turn right again, walk up the block, then cross Overlook Avenue and walk up the public staircase to Fort Washington Avenue. Do an about-face for some amazing views of upper Manhattan and the Bronx, then proceed north on Fort Washington to Margaret Corbin Plaza and enter the park from there. The Cloisters is not far from there on foot. You'll also pass right by the elevator entrance to the station. Also, absolutely amble around the park and take in the views of the Hudson and the NJ Palisades. You will not be disappointed. You're welcome 😎

I really enjoyed the video thank you. I'm watching from the UK. I used to live in London in the 90s and I loved to use the buses there, I found them to be so much more useful than the Underground. However when I have visited NYC I have found the buses to be too infrequent to be of use, also the routes where I was staying were not very useful. It wasn't a comprehensive exploration however. When you are in the centre of London you see buses everywhere, but when you are in Manhattan, occasionally you see a bus.

There was a peak hour express bus route called the X90 that ran from Lower Manhattan to Yorkville on the Upper East Side near the East River. It operated via the FDR Drive and York Avenue. Despite having fairly high ridership for an express bus route, it was eliminated in 2010 due to budget cuts. The MTA felt that it was expendable since it was a short route.

In New York we say "getting off". We also fold our newspaper 8 ways so it's really thin and doesn't get in the way of anyone next to you, until the Times changed its layout and then you folded it 6 ways (I'm old.)

That hill in the 101 bus brings back a lot of memories when we used to take the bus down Lexington Avenue to 98th street. The old buses in the late 80s and early 90s would struggle on that hill and when it would get caught at the top red light it was kind of scary.

Fun fact about waterside plaza at 5:52 It's actually built on Bristol Basin which is the name for the outcropping of land the buildings are on. They're called that because they used ww2 rubble imported from Bristol England!

The ultrasonic sensors on the rear doors are frequently broken or miscalibrated but you can overpower the door with hand strength and force the door open. The door opens itself once you start pushing, it's not very strongly shut. If you are close enough to the door, the door has a nag alert to tell you to back off because if the bus brakes too hard and you fall on the doors, you might fall out.

Everyone hates the touch-tape door opening system. It seems like it doesn’t work as often as it does work. The MTA had disabled it during Covid in favor of automatic (touchless) door opening, but what ended up happening is so many people evaded bus fares by boarding through the center and rear doors that the MTA had to bring back the touch-tape to stop (or at least slow down) the fare-beaters.

And the lesson here kids is, is that Miles can find convoluted ways to circumnavigate Manhattan by bus!! Also Miles, Washington Heights and Inwood in Upper Manhattan that's my neck of the woods is a underrated neighborhood albeit expensive!

The first segment overlaps a few of my frequent bike commute routes (I vary them) from the Staten Island Ferry to the East 50s.

I was curious if you could do this challenge in SF. Unfortunately, there aren't many routes around the perimeter (and the biggest stretches are the F Line and T 3rd St, which are both rail so don't count), so it's just a lot of hopping back and forth to try and get loops out to the water then back in to keep going. A better challenge would be to circumnavigate the Bay. The weak link in this system is easily AC Transit, which relies on BART for long-distance intercity travel, so only offers super local routes that will take you all day to traverse Alameda County. Best course might be to start the day at Fremont BART and catch the last overnight bus (AC Transit Route 801 leaving 5:55 AM) to San Leandro BART, AC Transit Tempo BRT to 19th St Oakland, AC Transit NL Transbay Bus to San Francisco Transbay Terminal, walk one block to Mission/1st, take SamTrans 292 to Hillsdale Shopping Center, transfer to SamTrans ECR to the Palo Alto Transit Center, transfer to VTA 522 or 22 to the Santa Clara Transit Center, transfer to VTA 60 to Milpitas Transit Center, then finally transfer to AC Transit Route 217 back to Fremont BART. If you want to loop in the North Bay, things will get painful but should be doable. Start again at Fremont BART with AC Transit 801 then Tempo BRT to 19th St. This time, take AC Transit Route 72R to El Cerrito Del Norte BART, then transfer to Soltrans Route R to the Vallejo Transit Center. There is no regular bus service between Napa/Solano Counties and Sonoma County, so an Amtrak Thruway bus will have to do. This will be tricky as there are only 4 per day per direction. Take one of these to the Petaluma Copeland Transit Mall and transfer to either Golden Gate Transit Route 101 or 172. Take either to Mission/1st St in San Francisco, then continue with the above (SamTrans 292, SamTrans ECR, VTA 522 or 22, VTA 60, AC Transit 217). This one may not be possible in a day...

Worst case, I wonder if you could buy a one-station ticket (Vacaville-Suisun City?) with a connecting bus to Petaluma, then just get on at Vallejo.

I've eaten at the Capitol "Diner" several times and can confirm it deserves the B, but yeah, Inwood (northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan) is great! Lots of fantastic views from those parks.

Nice ride around the city. I will be doing an absolutely a points run on Saturday the 29th New Haven to Penn Station then back, then New Haven to South Station and back. Amtrak offered me Select Status if I take three round trips between July 24 and Sept 10 and each leg costs at lease $25. Theses two runs will cover most of it, then I will be tossing in a bonus Auto Train trip in August, If that doesn't get me the Select status I might make another Boston run on the 26th of August.

Great video! I was wondering if you could do a video about the situation at the former Greyhound Bus Terminal in Philly? As people who ride buses a lot I think it could be good to cover the dire situation that Greyhound/Flixbus has caused in Philly and in other areas!

Assuming they can have a better facility there that would be great, but the local transit access would be a lot more of a pain.

Well, that was absolutely fantastic! The M4 is my favorite bus ride in NYC, and yes, you should go to the Cloisters. That's the first long city bus ride I ever took, Friday after Thanksgiving from midtown to the Cloisters (and back!) If you haven't, however, done the A train stop you passed by, you should just for the elevator experience. The only thing I wish you had done differently in the captions would have been to include the bus number (where you list fares, etc). Otherwise a great tour. Never do it again on Pride Parade day, though!
