We’d Rather Plant Too Much | Homestead Vlog | May 6, 2024

Today we are finally getting most of the garden planted. We planted tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, okra and zucchini. Here we grow 80% of the food we eat and this is what it looks like!
Tomatoes: Red Snapper, San Marzano, Lemon Boy, Hossinator, Mountain Merrit
Peppers: Banana, Monster Bell, California Wonder, Mad Hatter, Cayenne, Poblano, Carolina Reaper, Habaneros
Cucumbers: White Wonder, Market More, and Pickling
We always put gypsum by our tomatoes and peppers to prevent blossom end rot! Works like a charm!

Seeing the kids planting reminds me of the last full garden I was able to plant. My granddaughter wanted to “ help!” Lol. She was around 4-5 years old. I was striking of the row and I let her come along behind me dropping the peas. Showed her how to space them out and all. I was about 25 yards out and she says papaw I’m out of seeds. No kidding, about 2-3 lbs of peas in that short row ! At first it bothered me, then it was how can I pick all those up but then I just covered them up ! When those seeds came up !!! They brought the earth with them. 😮. There were clots of dirt 5-6 “ off the ground. Not necessarily off that row but I had more peas that year than ever. Her row grew some peas and a ton of memories I hang to dearly. 😂

To me it's way better to plant too many things and end up with extra, that I can give away than to plant too little and end up short. Since my yard is so small no matter what I plant I end up buying from my local farm stands/markets to make up the shortfall. My parents used to plant tons of each type of vegetable and always felt proud to be able to give to family and friends

The onions have allium leaf miner. A fly makes holes in the leaf and lays larva that crawl down the inside of the leaf and finish out their life cycle in between the layers of the bulb. I lost my whole crop to them last year. This year I covered my onions with fabric like I do the brassicas and my onions are doing great.

Wow! Know one can access you guys of being lazy. Farming is hard work . Your garden looks like it could be in a magazine . No joke ! I love how well everything is arranged, perfect. You & your family probably accomplished More in a few hours than most people do in a day . I love 💕 how you account for more than less . I remember how people would come to church with their pick up trucks loaded with produce in the back & after church stand there and give it away . I remember people saying what a blessing it was to them . So many of them were older & know longer planting . For them to have fresh vegetables and etc. it literally meant the world to them . I have a very strong feeling you & hubby are the same way. I love watching your kids getting involved. When older they will be sustainable , filled with knowledge … I truly believe it prepares them for life. Plus driving that tractor 🚜 I’m a firm believer it helps with driver’s Ed. lol! Hi ya`ll just finished watching you plant your garden . I live here in the middle of South Carolina . I also worked in my garden this morning . I dugged potatoes and canned the small ones ,they look so good . I've already pulled the onions and have dried them , they are as big as large apples . I plant my sweet onions the middle of October and harvest them in April they turn out beautiful . I`ll be turning 80 in August and still plant my garden and really enjoy working in the dirt . I love looking at your videos and you know that you young folks can teach an old dog new tricks . Keep up the good work and may God bless you in many ways .

I’ve heard people having success with this method for squash. I have to say "Granny Canning" is changing my world. Someone's granny cans with a light brine and only 20 minutes water bath. So far I've done; carrots, frozen peas, kale, spinach, mushrooms, green peppers and ALL are amazing. Frozen peas were the biggest shocker of all, so good ate them cold....not canned pea taste at all. They are like the al dente of pasta but in the vege world. Here's the mix: 1 c. Vinegar 14 c. Water 3 T. SALT 12-15 Ibs. Veges Small batch 4 T. Vinegar 3/4 T. Salt 3 1/2 c. Water Veges Water bath 20 minutes They are brined... but they aren't pickles by any means.

If you have a dehydrator, you can dehydrated the tomatoes, then make them into powder and keep them in a jar for when you need it for tomato juice and other things!!

Rodale’s vegetable garden problem solver book says onion maggot is the pest and either water or late nitrogen feed is the cause of bulb splitting! This is a great resource for the farmer!

Thanks for sharing! I smiled all the way through this video. I always start more seeds than we need because I know what seed failures are. Well, We now have 20 summer squash and zucchini plants. We are 3 adults (the kids and grand kids visit occasionally) and only have 1.5 acre. Still you can be sure, I found places in the gardens to stuff every one of those squash plants. Now, I'm working on a plan for the tomatoes. Seeds are coming up everywhere here this year. I keep finding lemon cucumbers (planted 3 years ago and haven't planted again) and zinnias. Like you, we just let 'em grow where they come up. One day I believe we won't have to work to plant one seed / plant and still have all the food we could ever need! Praise His name, mercy and gifts. Such a beautiful farm you have.

To do great w okra -drop seeds side by side really close. Cover w garden dirt just barely. Keep moist and hill it up as plants get larger to make roots sturdy

We live in Nova Scotia Canada and grow a small garden every year. This fall we will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, so that's how many years we've had our little homestead. This year we changed up our garden. We've always planted a traditional garden the same way our parents and grandparents did it, in rows. This year we made garden boxes, that are still at ground level but grown the same as in raised beds. Hopefully with munching, our garden will be easier to keep weed free. What i read. Plant onions late May in warmer soils that kill maggots and after flies have been out awhile.(like planting squash early or later before/after borers or squash bugs are out) Rotate onion crop. Row cover to prevent maggot fly. Lots of info on Google

If you have never had stuffed and fried squash blossoms before, it’s well worth looking up a recipe. And it cuts down on having too much squash. The neighbors would run inside when my dad came out with a bunch of zucchini’s 😂

Your supper reminded me of a dish I used to get at a diner years ago! They called it "Open face roast beef sandwich". They took a piece of light bread topped with chunks of roast, poured gravy over it. You got mashed potatoes and some coleslaw to go with it!!! It was delicious! Your supper will be too! I'm not sure about your onions but I live in south Florida "the bug capital of the world" and I have never had a lot of luck with onions. I accidentally planted my onions and carrots in the same bed and have had the best harvest ever. Now I have read online and learned they are great companion plants. It is worth a try. There’s something oddly satisfying about raising a garden with just a tiller and garden tools you use by hand versus using a tractor. Some of my best gardens was with a tiller and hoe.

I use yellow squash in cornbread. I freeze it, shred it, and throw in cornbread in the winter with some cheese. It turns out pretty good. Just a thought for the future. If you want fresh veggies in the winter time.

Jacob has a well laid out garden. I love it that he and Maggie have their own gardens. I got mine planted Friday morning and since Friday evening, I've had 2.5 inches of rain as of this morning. Try making hoe cakes with your yellow squash. Grate them into a collander, add some salt and let it drain for a couple of hours. Squeeze out the remaining water, add beaten eggs and corn meal mix to make a thick batter. Fry until brown, let cool, then freeze. They keep really well and taste fresh all winter.

Love seeing y'all plant your garden. I have all raised beds (9) and grow bags (25) and I planted all of my seeds (cucumbers, bush beans, squash, kale, watermelon, and cantaloupe) on Friday. I plant them full and close like Andy said, and do lots of companion planting. Working on my herbs and been harvesting chamomile flowers for tea and medicinal use. Still need to set out my tomatoes and peppers, they will harden off this week maybe, (we are expecting a week of rain) and go into the garden beds and bags Mother's Day weekend (signs are good). I loved seeing Jacob planting his garden. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans scream summer and makes a fine supper. Jacob should paint a little sign that says "Jacob's Garden" and hang it on the gate. Maggie could do the same and paint the rocks lining her garden. I love seeing your kids gardening and running barefoot. The onions are a mystery to me, thought it might be some type of nematode or eelworm??? I appreciate that you clarified that you DO NOT plant peppers the same as tomatoes, I have heard so many people say bury peppers just like you do tomatoes. Your supper looked delicious and I will definitely try that with the next roast I make. Keep on going Lawson family, God bless all of you!

I plant two tomatoes in a hole every year, removing all leaves except for the top two, and they turn out fine with tons of extra roots. I am so short on space in my garden, I either did that or did without. The success really surprised me. I grow too many zucchini, and I dehydrate those good and dry after slicing in 1/3" to 1/2" slices and keep in glass jars...they will dehydrate down to look like a potato chip, then I add them to meat loaf and mashed potatoes off season when I crave them.. We filled our empty milk cartons with water and poured it in the soil next to the tomato thru out the season, we use bone meal and pelitted fertilizer in the hole with the Mater and some Fish fertilizer once a week Good Luck 🌱

Back in the eighties, my dad planted some okra in a garden across the street from where we lived. It was in an elderly man’s garden. The okra wasn’t doing too good. Some lady told him to switch that okra, like some parents may have their kids. Daddy tries it, and If I remember well, that okra done better than expected!

Those onions look like they have been attacked by onion flies and their maggots...they overwinter and live off the newly planted seedlings/sets...little horrid bugs...hope u have seen the last of them. ps. love your show. thank you for being real☺☺

Meagan I live in ontario canada 🇨🇦 and I always get volunteer tomato plants each spring as long as the dirt is not disturbed we get -40 in Celsius we still get volunteer plants, last year I got over 30 plants that came up on their own I love your channel and all the different gardens you guys are doing amazing

Good to hear the tip about preventing blossom end rot. I have had good luck with adding about a cup of dry powdered milk mixed into the soil in each tomato plant hole.

I make cookies with frozen squash. Just follow the pumpkin cookie recipe. I bake it and blend it up good then freeze in 1 1/2- 2 c bags. Just make sure and let it drain good before using it.

One way to get your okra to germinate is to soak your seed overnight. I grew about eight plants of okra in a watering trough last year. I got about four gallons of okra, after I cut it up, for us from those eight plants.

We have 3 tomatoe plants. One in a pot on the patio and 2 in the ground. Which will be plenty for us.

I'd some chickens in that onion spot for a day or two. then I'd pull those onions and plant my extra tomatoes with some French marigolds and basil!

My grandmother told me that you can plant okra when you can go bare footed.

My mom and wife have found out that if they shred zucchini like you would for zucchini bread, freezer bag it in amounts for 1 loaf and freeze it that it works really good. They have also start making zucchini muffins instead of loafs ( same recipe just in muffins cause ya can just grab one for a snack and don't have to take the time to slice it). The muffins they have only been doing for about 20-25 years but freezing the shredded zucchini mom has been doing that for about 40-50 years, now it only works for zucchini bread/muffins though.

Zucchini is great to shred and add to chicken noodle soup and spaghetti sauce for added nutrition if you need another place to use it up. I love all of your gardening spaces!

I always put a handful of crushed up egg shells in the hole where I am planting the tomato. I have never had blossom end rot because of that.

My cousin would plant his tomatoes real close together and he would have so many of them and he put a wire fence up on the rows he planted them in and he had so many of them and with him having them so close it was hardly any weeds in his garden
