I still find it baffling that these players are rated 40 overall. That implies that they are 40% of the way to playing perfect basketball. They are almost-half-great. You know, having read the original Death of Basketball article, it amazes me how much the later version of the game is trying to prevent Jon and non-Jon from replicating Jon’s original experiment. I had this really awesome change in Madden 2006. I really disliked LaDanien Tomlinson, and I wanted to screw him over. I once changed his stats to make him bad, but they just cut him instead. So... I bumped up some of his stats, but turned his carrying(likelihood of fumbling) all the way down. Best automated franchise mode ever. Teams always signed him, and then got rid of him the next season. His teams always did terribly.

This is easily one of the most creative and interesting things I’ve ever seen anyone do with a sports video game. Bringing your twisted thought-experiments out of the lab and into the light of day in such an entertaining fashion is truly incredible. I felt a very real, visceral disgust as I watched this and the ‘08 Lions videos. Please don’t stop making these.

The reason for the old-time names is because they have a very simple naming algorithm for randomly generated players. They just take a list of every in-game player’s first name and last name and randomly assign one of each to each created player. Since there are so many historical teams in the game, a lot of old names tend to pop up

@@NGH47 Intangibles in basketball specifically mean basically "good quality of uncertain origin." Like, if someone has good intangibles, that means they tend to get decent results even if on paper they aren't very fast, strong, or accurate. Usually it refers to players who "work hard" in some capacity.
