When chess grandmasters play computers, they often start with archaic openings they’d never play against human opponents. As computing power has increased, chess engines have more or less figured out the most common opening moves; an obsolete and fundamentally unsound move, they think, has a better chance of confusing the AI. Jon has managed something similar, perhaps by accident. For all his remarks of chaotic randomness, I noticed something familiar in his formation: it’s essentially the single wing, which was the predominant offense in the early days of professional football. The backs are offset to one side, and the tailback takes the snap; he rolls out, and either keeps the ball himself, or passes to the end who runs downfield. The T formation and it’s balanced attack exposed the single wing’s limitations in the early 1940s, and it was mostly extinct in big-time football by the end of the decade. A “real” football team, such as a Group of Five FCS school, could adopt an Air Raid philosophy or a clock-eating Leroy Hoard rushing attack to great success, and many have. No one’s bringing back the single wing. But, the Madden engine is simulating “real” football; it doesn’t know what to do with the single wing.

That was more a criticism of how Madden pros play the game than anything specific he said. He literally said "we don't use slants," one of the most common routes in real football. Madden pros play a video game, and as such, there are game breaking mechanics in the programming, which are exploited by the high-level players.
@armadillolover995 жыл бұрын
Tyler Which is even more ridiculous since even defenses that are specifically meant to cover the slant don’t actually stop slant routes if you’re not usering over the middle.
@gregmccauley16875 жыл бұрын
I think out of respect the Madden pro wouldn't have given them a silly play like that. He probably assumed they wanted a somewhat reasonable play that was guaranteed to crush the AI. I'm sure he knows plenty of broken plays with the level of game knowledge he must have.

I had a friend who on what I believe was madden 08 who ran only two created plays and was utterly unbeatable. He always played as his favorite team (Washington) and ran an empty-set diamond bunch where the entire o-line pulled to lead block a sweep for Jason Campbell and a pass play where the receivers would crash into each other mid route that would frequently cause Antwaan Randle-El to just glitch and appear 15 yards behind the safeties for a touchdown.

I honestly liked Kofie's original logic. The formation is great. Until Richard butted in he had his best receiver isolated on the left, making him hard to double cover and probably matched with the #2 corner. With the void created on that side, the TE drag was perfect, and the slant would've worked too with the right timing. Keep the long corner but change the second corner to a flat! The routes would complement each other and the flat gets open easily and quickly from that formation, giving you a much needed quick outside option. I'd say just have the RB block too. If you have to run the same play all game, you definitely need a way to get the ball out fast, an extra blocker against the pass rush, Megatron threatening deep (He's 6'5" with 96 speed, and anyone can get open underneath), nobody just treated as a decoy, and obviously it would be a pass, not a run. ...yeah so ignore Richard and try this, Kofie.
