Hey guys! To clear up confusion since we've received lots of questions: collision regulations are the same no matter what language you're speaking. A sailboat with sails on port and wind on starboard is the stand on vessel. The only difference is in the terminology. This isn't that strange -- the whole point of other languages is to express the same thing in different ways. I say boat, the germans say boot, the french say bateau, but we're all talking about the same thing. This is no different. In English, a vessel on starboard tack is the stand on vessel. In German a vessel on "backbordbug" is the stand on vessel. It only gets a bit confusing when you try to make a LITERAL translation between the two languages. This is a situation where you need an "in person" translation rather than using a translation app to get the real meaning. Hope this clears things up! -Maya

When I was doing a sailing course in the 1980's in Travemünde, we learned "backbordbug" and "steuerboardbug". But meanwhile my daughter learned the international names during her sailing course in Warnemünde. This is how we use it when we sail together.

I am so happy for the both of you!! I am an old man now and can't do the things that you are doing but I am thrilled that you are and that you can. Please trust my experience here, and appreciate the moment and the millions of other 'moments' that you will one day look back on and understand just how wonderful those things were!! Please, press on with your dreams, be careful and never look back!!

These two are archetypal explorers; kind enough to share their rich experience with humility. They're not in 'lockdown' (a prison term) and no one stares at a phone. They're living life on their terms and sharing the beautiful world as they see it. That is art and I am impressed.

The intro of every one of these videos include a clip of Maya overlays playing the violin, singing, keyboarding and I can't help but wonder how intricately hard it must have been to overlay and synchronize the video and audio. So professional Maya! Good JOB! I've not seen another content creator include so advanced a production.

Hi there you two. I love your videos and your relationship. You're very fortunate. My wife and i built a wooden gaff cutter 27 years ago with a view to doing what you're doing but I'm afraid that it didn't come to pass and we couldn't afford to keep the boat and a house so the boat had to go. So keep sailing you pair of lovelies. From Rick in Western Australia.

Wonderful that you two actually sail for the sake of sailing and it is nice to see a KZbinr sailor that one knows about the advantages of backwinding the jib when tacking/coming about so that pulling in the jib on the other side is easier and can be done without a winch. Every other sailing channel I've seen pretty much, people let go of the jib sheets when coming about (instead of backwinding the jib like you showed in this episode) and then they have to wrestle with pulling in the sheet and winching it in on the other side.

About 40 years ago I was on a business trip to the Hague. Business being what it is I only spent a few days there. But I was lucky to have a local guide to show me the city. I did see enough to make me realize the Netherlands would be a wonderful place to visit. Unfortunately I never made that visit happen. So I am really thankful to Sailing Magic Carpet (and Sailing Uma) for showing what I was not able to come and see myself.

OMH this video brought me strong memories. We were anchored in front of Marken (right in front of Volendam) we left the anchored towards Enkehuizen (I was not aware of the Storm). We tried to get in the lock with sails up and engine running but the storm got us in the Markmeer close to the Naviduct around 9PM. We lower the sails and kept the engine until the messy storm passed. It was around 1 hour with lighting, waves and seeing nothing in front of us. It was a nerve wracking experience for begining sailors that we are (me and my wife). We decided don't go ashore with that amount of wind and messy waves sailing towards the storm back to the lake. It was a dificult decision to make, between anchoring on the lake or keep the engine running (we opted for the second). Luckily we passed with no damages for this intense experience. We are big fans of the channel we were so close to see the Magic Carpet it is a shame that didn't happen. Awesome video. The one before this was an art work.. congratulations for the quality.

Another great video. Complete understanding on the summer storms, we lived in Orlando Florida for 4 years and you could set your clock, almost, by the rain storms during the summer. Somewhere between 2:00pm and 3:00pm the rain would come and dump plus the lightning was amazing and scary. As to the nettles, those are never fun having hiked a lot and work in land surveying in my early years I understand. Really enjoying catching up on the videos this weekend, Thanks for sharing.

There are more deep Lakes in the Netherlands. Much of the bigger canals are deep enough for your boat. You can even let your mast on. Friesland/Overijssel have some shallow lakes and canals but in the south west most lakes and canals are deep enough. There is a lot you did not see yet. I spending allmost 45 years on the dutch waterways and lakes and i did not see them all. I enjoy your vlogs very much and this serie you have outdone youself with capturing the beauty of traveling by boat thru europes only real delta.

I know these waters very well. My boat was in Lelystad Haven for many years. I was surprised about the thunderstorms you experienced. Never seen so many there. But I advise you to go to Marken (an island) with it's monumental lighthouse (het Paard van Marken) or The Marken Horse. Enter Marken before 16.00 and try to dock on port in the community harbor. It's for free, nice harbormaster, but you have to double bang always. You will meet the nicest people then and load of tourists in daytime. At Night Marken is for the sailors.

What a joyride, and good fun with the wind vane! For a true no-touch tack, you'd need a device to preserve the wind angle on the other side, e.g. from 45° starboard to 45° port, just like a self-tacking jib.

Yes, summer thunderstorms often appear at about 16:00h and 20:00h after a hot humid summerday. The whole day surface water got evaporated forming clouds , then when it starts cooling back down late afternoon all that water seems to come back down in one big spectacular downpour. Sometimes even in the form of hailstones.
