Josh, when I was 16-17 I used to trap muskrats in NE Nv. The man that taught me was in his 50's & had been trapping the majority of his life. We set the traps under the water where their slide entered the water. If you handle the traps, you are leaving your scent on them & they will avoid it. That is why placing the traps underwater generally works best (no scent underwater). I believe I mentioned this not long ago when you first mentioned the muskrats. Scrub your floating trap then use gloves when handling. Try some peanut butter on the carrot (or dowel) & make sure your traps & the wood are free of your scent. When processing the muskrats (the meat is edible & there used to be a market for the pelts) try & save the urine in a jar & put it in a small spray bottle as needed. It will help mask any scent you might inadvertently leave on a trap that's not underwater. The pelts were worth more when trapped during the winter as the fur was much fuller. Hope this helps & have fun.

I haven't trapped in decades but one thing I noticed is that you set the traps straight out of the store. You need to boil them in clean water first to remove your scent. Then set them after you've washed your hands in hunter's soap to remove the scent from your hands. I also just subscribed cuz I'm interested in finding out how this goes for you.

When I was a kid about 12 a farmer paid us 1.50$ for every muscrat we killed on his farm, they did not last long and it gave us something constructive to do. Then when winter came he took us all skiing, cool farmer.

I used to run a couple of traplines back in the `60s. My favorite set was a "sliding wire", where a length of mechanic`s wire was staked with one end below the water`s surface, and the other end up on the bank. The ring on the trap`s chain slides along the wire. Rats will ALWAYS break for the water when caught, and most often drown while trying to escape. You need to do this, or they will most likely chew the trapped foot right off. Another good set is to sink a 55-gallon barrel with rocks inside to hold it down, and fill it about halfway up with water. Stretch a piece of burlap or tarp over the top and secure it with cord. Put some food on top, and leave it for a few days until you see that the rats are coming freely to the bait. They are cautious critters, so this will take a few days. Once you`re sure that they are coming freely, cut the fabric like a pizza, so they will fall into the drum and drown when they can`t get out. I caught a LOT of rats like that. Also, with new traps, get an old metal bucket and boil some ashes from a fire, and boil the traps in that to get rid of that oil & metal smell. Rats won`t go near a new trap. Happy hunting !

A shot of the pond at night with the lights would be cool to see.

Josh, looks to me like you are setting your traps on the air or ventilation holes for the Dens. Try the entrances they are usually located just under the surface of the water.

100 years ago, I trapped muskrat, mink & skunk. For best results don't touch traps or bait with your bare hands. Also, muskrat live traps work awesome when anchored underwater right where their path enters the water.

Probably they are avoiding the fresh human/doggie scent.... just leave them for a few days, although you may want the floating trap further out in the water. The Clampetts would be so jealous of your fresh vittles!!!

To get rid of the deer just put up a fence at about a 45% angle and the deer will leave you alone. They won't try to jump over a fence that is on an angle. Looks like all of your rats are on vacation this week. Maybe didn't work because they smell your scent on the traps. I noticed you made sure your scent was on everything so they would know who it was that was after them. It is always good to be smarter than the rats.

Just relax it’ll work. Especially when it rains. Get a local trapper to give you a few pointers or barter with him for some sweet corn or something he needs. Trappers are usually good folks.

I seen a good old boy U-TUBER that traps Muskrats with his Minks. He also does a lot of Ratting with the Minks and his pack of dogs.

I am NOT a trapper but look for and try some female muskrat scent on the traps.Along same lines your scent on the traps could make them shy away. Also, anything new tends to make critters wary. After the traps are there for a bit they may start catching something.

Permit for “twenty five” muskrats. My math would get real questionable real fast like. All must perish!!! Happy trappin!

You let them get very established so good luck. There's many videos on trapping. The traps needed cleaned and maybe stained. They are easy. But you don't want to train them. Good luck! God bless. Chet O'Brien

I agree with Larry Parish. We also used to boil our traps before setting them and bathed them with urine when we had it.

We had a similar problem and ended up gassing the holes using the exhaust fumes from our riding mower to get the job done. And it worked very well we have to repeat every other year
