Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. To see your face in my list of videos, and know you have a new chat coming is so uplifting to this 70+ woman. I feel you're a friend, and talk about what's happening with you to my partner, and my friends, and I don't care if they think I don't have enough in my life or something. Because my mind is stimulated so often, and my heart is always filled when I get to visit with you, it's just that simple. I worry about your health, and love walking through your garden, just as I do all my friends, Jess. I value you, and I know you have thousands of friends like me, and I'm glad.💖

I am so sorry when there is mean people who has a life that they don't have life to enjoy that they have to be mean to someone. I am a Nurse been a nurse since I was 20, now 65. In that time, I was yelled at, screamed, threatened, and so on sad part is that people take out their anger of their self on someone or they just like being mean, sad to say it's true. Please don't let it get at you too much, I know it's hard not to cause your kind, loving, and care about others. So I love you, kindness, gardens, and things that you and your spouse share ❤️. I BLESS YOU ELIZABETH

I absolutely love Aldi. I will admit it took me awhile to get used to shopping there but I made myself keep going back and each visit I committed to trying one new item. That was about 8 years ago and now I shop almost exclusively there. On the occasion that I have to stop by a different grocery store I am always amazed at how much more expensive groceries are at the other grocery stores. Aldi has saved our family so much money over the years and has been a real blessing with the crazy rate of inflation the past few years. On a side note, thank you for inviting us to your table. I truly believe your channel not only offers wonderful gardening knowledge but it also provides a much needed sense of community.

I am the same way. Took me a while to get used to it but in our rural area (I am saying a 45 mile radius from my house) we have Aldi and Walmart and one,,,,,,,,,yep just ONE grocery store. Our nearest Sam's club (no Costco for miles and miles) is a 100 mile round trip for us. So, I shop Aldi almost exclusively. I love their produce and many things. I still shop Walmart for a few things, but not many. Wish we had a Costco close by. We raise all of our own meat and butcher it and in the summer I have fresh veggies in our garden. I also do a lot of canning so there is that and I make my own bread. No Azure Standard drop near us either. We are basically " out in the middle of nowhere".

Gotta share my ALDI story. We don't have ALDI in the Pacific Northwest. I've read about them many times on Money Conscience Blogs. When I went to the Abundance + event last year, I was driving somewhere when I saw my 1st ALDI. I quick did a U-turn and went in to see what all the hype was about. I photographed pomegranates that were 99 cents each. They are nearly 3X that here. The other thing that left an impression was how small the store was.

Funnily enough, this is the first video of yours I've watched in a long while. Not because I stopped liking your videos, just because life got complicated and I started to neglect my garden. I also lost a good friend that I used to watch your videos with. But I've recently started getting my hands dirty again, and I felt the call of your video today. I think it is important to remember that something doesn't necessarily have to have a lesson to be meaningful. This morning I couldn't sleep because of my chronic pain and watching your video felt like visiting an old friend. Comfortable and kind and just what I needed. ❤

YES! 100% here for the everyday type of content. You have been such a light in my life Jess. God has used you to speak into my life countless times through gardening, being a mom, and the life lessons you share from a poetic heart that feels so kindred. Thank you for being you. Thank you for showing up consistently. I feel you mark the path well. I just turned 30 (my birthday is a few days before yours!) and I have a 2.5 year old daughter who loves watching your videos with me BTW, plus a baby boy due in about a month. So inspired to enter 2024 with what I've learned from you and see God doing in your life. If He can do all that He is through you and Miah, surely He is a God who can use me and my family too. Legacy is my focus this year!

Before I even watch this - THANK YOU! It's been such a challenging 2 weeks!. My dad fell multiple times so I flew home from Cancun to California to be with him. Things initially were really bad with malnourishment and extreme dehydration but we got news from the doctor today all's wrong is some lower back pain because I have been pumping him with food and electrolytes that he's finally eating and without me cajoling prompting or something. So when I opened up my KZbin after I just got him to bed I said JESS!! GIMME SOME JESS N MIAH!! And here you are 🥹🙏🥰 so grateful ❤❤

When I'm chit-chating about gardening I'll say, "Jess said ... " to the point that you are now part of the family 😊 My daughter will ask "what did Jess say, or what did Jess do?" I watch you every day, and sometimes it is just to relax with my cup of tea, and you have yours and we stroll to your greenhouse to see who we can wish Happy Birthday! I totally get what you're saying about critics disproportionately affecting you. I have been a pastor for 45 years, and preaching even longer. I could have 200 people say, thank you. That message really blest me. One person could say, that sermon was awful. And that one criticism will haunt me the rest of the day, and will terrorize my sermon prep the next week. Listen Jess, you have no idea how much your channel fed me during our last tour in Scotland. You were how I kept up on homesteading in America. You, Miah and the kids. ❤❤ I think I’m the one who shared that planner in the Facebook group (fan girls a bit). I’m so glad you found one!! We currently have about 5” of snow on the ground in west Tennessee so I’m spending the next few days setting up my planner and getting my stuff ready to start brassica seeds and plan my summer garden. ❤️❤️ Y’all stay warm!

I understand that you will probably never see this comment! I am a patreon. Do I ever comment on your lives or even on your videos? NO! Tonight on the almost birthday of my firstborn son it was a joy to watch your young boys enjoying their morning beverage. My son is 33 today. I was a single mom for a while. I understand the struggle. Thanks for sharing your life with us and bringing us joy!!❤

Hi Jess! I would love to see another "Devotional VLOG". I haven't seen one from you in a long time and I know you have your own office now, which, I believe, might be a great place to create one of those from you to many of us. As always!

I think Aldi is a great place to bless someone in the parking lot via the cart system. Someone older & less mobile then me...someone that's about to get their child from the cart to the carseat...."I'll buy your cart from you (25 cents)." I take their cart & they don't have to walk back to the store. AND Aldi has very good chocolate. 😁

My fun Aldi story from this week! I have a little girl who just turned two. Now she is primarily with me so we do almost all of our family grocery shopping together. We regularly shop at Aldi. Well for various reasons we hadn't been to Aldi for almost a month. So when I took her out of the car at Aldi a few days ago and she threw both of her little hands in the air and s said "Yay Aldi!". She then made sure that I was excited too her little "Mommy like Aldi?" Melted my heart. Kids are so precious.

I may not be someone you know one on one but I value being accepted into your world. Sometimes the everyday life videos mean more to me than all the videos where I’ve learned something. Yes we all need to grow gardens and do the self sufficient life style.. but some days.. we just need a friend who’s encouraging us in ways they don’t even know about. That’s Gods hand. I love your friendship and your family.

Dear heart, The reason we all love you like we do is because you are reflecting each and every one of us in one way or another. The gardener, the mom, the wife, the insecure, the boldly brave chick, the worrier, the warrior, the vulnerable, the creative soul, the hot mess on some days, and the "holy cow! How did I do all that?" kinda woman. Please don't let the negative people in this world steal our sunshine! Thank you for being real for all of us, it lets us all know it's ok to let our hair down and do the same. Thank you for showing up every day that you do. I appreciate you.

I found you this summer and have listening to your older videos while winter sewing in Va 7b. Just in time for the snow with yummy coffee drinks and now infused teas I received as a gift. So nice to hear you laugh and inspire me on a cold night.

I smile everytime I see that I have one of your videos to watch! Whether it is a how to or a chat, it makes no difference. Your calm and inviting demeanor is so awesome that I can't wait to hear/see what you have in store for us!! Thanks Jess!!

Thank you for your cluttered countertop! I always feel so inadequate when I watch lots of videos of others working in the kitchen and their kitchens are so "neat". Thank you for giving me a hug in that very moment!

So lovely to see your day to day and I do not care about the mess, most creative people have a hard time keeping things perfectly tidy and I make no excuses anymore. I like to see my projects out, waiting for me to continue or finish and that is what I'm like

I appreciate how you mention not needing to worry about criticism and your almost immediately put in a situation where you have to partially show your bedroom which you’ve previously proclaimed to be too messy for sharing with the audience.

I remember the days of taking my daughter to the airport at the end of breaks and the emptyness in my heart when she hugged me bye. It is such a weird combination of grief of the leaving you but proud of what they are learning and the amazing humans they have become. I love drinking my coffee while watching you it is like a impromptu coffee date with an old friend.
