Just two things about this review. 1. Symmetrical AWD isn’t a “fancy way of saying it’s AWD all of the time.” It has to do with the balance of the entire system, front to back and side to side. The drive shafts from each axle are the same length side to side to hopefully eliminate torque steer. 2. My 2016 Legacy has active torque vectoring, which Subaru has used since 2015. This review made it seem like the RAV4 had it and the Outback didn’t. 👍🏻

This is basically exactly my top two choices when I moved to the US in April. I was very interested in the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid XLE, but it was only just starting to become available and actually going for $2k over MSRP making it around $32.5k plus $1k destination plus all the taxes and on-road costs, making it around $37k all up. I had a 2017 RAV4 LE as a rental in January and it was a fuel pig and the adaptive cruise control only worked at over 25 mph. RAV4 hybrid's pre-2019 got very little better fuel economy. So I really wasn't interested in a used RAV4 as an option. 2019 or bust. I found a 2017 2.5 Outback Touring at a local dealer, certified pre-owned with 36736 miles, 7 year/100k mi powertrain warranty (so no head gasket or CVT worries). The interior is lovely, it's smooth and quiet in normal driving, gets 36 MPG at a steady 65 mph (32 at 70, 29 at 75). At 40 MPH in traffic or on suburban express routes it gets 40 to 50 MPG. The adaptive cruise control works down to well under walking speed. I put in an offer for $27389 ($30k exactly out the door) which they accepted. Compared to a 2019 model it's missing 1) Apple Carplay (but it's got nav, and a phone holder and BlueTooth audio works fine), 2) rear USB ports, 3) dynamic guide lines on the reversing camera. I can live without those. It does have blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and reverse automatic braking and rear parking sensors, dual zone climate air, rear seat vents, moonroof, fully automatic headlights, heated front and rear seats and steering wheel, paddles, x-mode. So pretty decent equipment level. Realistically, the RAV4 Hybrid might save $300/yr in fuel. It's not worth spending $7k more (20+ years of fuel savings) to get that. Plus I think the Outback Touring is just way nicer than the RAV4 XLE anyway. So I'm very happy with the Outback.

@BruceHoult8 ай бұрын
Gosh! That's five years ago! I checked old emails and they were asking $28500 which after all the fees and taxes came to $31210.65. So I saved $1210. Maybe I could have negotiated harder .. idk .. first and only time I've bought a car in the USA. And then COVID came and I left the US unexpectedly after only 11 months and sold the car for $23000 with 55000 miles on it (18264 more). When I got home to NZ I bought a 2008 Outback 2.5XT with 265 HP turbo engine and 5 sp auto. And Eyesght! In a nine year older car. Very rare limited edition car with 2000 made. And paid a ridiculously low US$6300 for it, with the same 55k miles as the 2017 car had when I sold it. Still loving it four years later, zero problems. @@maahdshahzad6550

There's a 10 mile stretch where i used to drive that was gravel. You couldn't drive faster then 20 miles an hr, cuz it slides all over the place and it doesn't have very good control. If another car is coming, i had to stop to let them pass, that's how unstable it is on gravel. Only thing the 4 wheel drive is good for is snow, if one wheel slides the others pick it up and push on through. But not for off roading.

I test drove the Rav4 Adventure and for only a few k more I bought the 4Runner Limited instead. On road the Rav4 is nicer and it does have a nicer interior. On rough/dirt roads the 4Runner is superior and I love the room and size of it. But, its gas mileage does suck; I'm averaging 19.5 highway, about 16.5 around town. Oh well, can't have everything.... Luckily, I don't need to commute in it. If I did, It would probably be a different vehicle...

Then they tell me I might want to do the spark plugs in 5,000 miles... I asked them to recommend any additional work while the motor was out that would save time/money/inconvenience... then they tell me I might want to do plugs after the engine is all put back together in the car again & I’m there to pick it up? No way never again will I buy Subarus. They make a couple cool cars but their service & reliability is unacceptable to me. I have a friend in another state who has the same issues with his Subaru Service Dept. I don’t know what’s going on with them but Subaru is a Lease under warranty only vehicle in my book. I purchased a new Outback in 2017, had RAB and many electrical problems from the start. After only a couple of months I had the car in the deanship for repairs. The dealer only deleted the PC history, did nothing to fix the problem, and does not supply the needed paperwork to prove I was there. Problems got MUCH worse. In for repair 10 + times, towed in 4 times. After contacting Subaru customers support, they said because the dealer refused to supply paperwork for your visits, they refused to refund my money for the Lemon the sold me. Car was traded in, because it would not work, still under warranty, still not fixed because they didn't know how to fix it. Lost well over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars, or the customer.

CVT = disposable car. When the CVT goes out you can pay $5000+++ for a new one or take your Outback to the scrapyard and buy a new car. Don't take my word on it, feel free to google how much a replacement CVT costs. I am surprised all the "environmentally conscious" people that it seems these types of car attract do not weigh the disposability factor. Rav4 all the way. Even if you are only keeping the car a few years or get a new car after 80,000 miles or whatever, resale value is affected, as second hand buyers know, when the CVT goes out, you tow the carcass to the crusher.

For the next car I wanted to get to replace my aging Mazda, these 2 were at the top of my list as well as the Forester. The big plus of Subarus is that they tend to top lists during safety tests..their assisted braking is known to be very consistent. They also seem more dog friendly, and I have a 95lb big boy. (The sloped back to the Rav4 suggests my dog might not have adequate space in the trunk area if the back seats are up.) But TFL talk of recalls under 5,000 miles for the Outback and the very bad rep concerning the longevity of CVT transmissions that aren't in Toyota or Honda's makes me want to stay away from Subaru models. The Rav4 conventional automatic transmission and more progressive look definitely add to its appeal. (Though Subaru have approved in look, they still seem a bit boring and too conventional.) So I guess I am mainly torn between Safety vs. Longevity. Hmmmm...

I see the Forester, especially in the top-end Touring trim, is like the 5 passenger mini-Highlander I wish Toyota would make. With comfortable legroom for four adults, and in a pinch, 5 adults is great. The heated front and back seats, along with 2nd row climate controls, Android and Apple Carplay, plus all the safety features and even a Driver recognition for distracted drivers which is also linked to the memory seats and mirrors is really nice. My main problems were with my wife's freeway commute, the 4 cyl engine had very slow 0 To 60 times and we didn't like the shuttering auto stop/start system. If these concerns don't bother you, the car is worth checking out and the Forester gets great gas mileage and has unmatched crash scores. I'd love to have both Longevity and Safety. Consumer Reports for 2018 Reliability: Toyota #1 vs Subaru #6 and for Safety, check out the IIhs.org crash ratings; both are top safety picks, but while the Forester is totally Good throughout, the Rav-4 rates Poor in the Passenger overlap test- it's worth a look. The Rav-4 is just a little too small for us, the Forester is the perfect size and had better legroom-but needs a quicker engine; so most likely we will wait and get a new a 2020 Highlander.

Please Tflcar stop asking 4 cylinder japanese Suvs to sound like genuine sportcar. It is unfair. We will end up listening to a fake motor sound thru the speakers. Let me remind you that owners buy those vehicules for one reason: reliability/re-sale value. The japanese Suvs that you reviewed are mostly used as commuter vehicules or mall crawlers. They will provide a safe AWD driving experience on any road conditions. But again you always try to compare those 4 cylinders AWD commuter Suvs to the Body-on-frame legit 4WD Suvs/trucks or rock crawling Jeep alike vehicules. There is a large market for Toyota and Subarus AWD 4 cylinders vehicules. But it clearly does not make you guys, the TflCar reviewers, excited at all.

@@afcgeo882 Where in that video was the AVERAGE Rav4??
@afcgeo8825 жыл бұрын
JOHN-OKC no one said it was in the video, but it’s important to mention that even the Adventure trim can be built to $34k, not $40k and can be actually had for less. Furthermore, why didn’t they compare it to an average Rav4? Because they couldn’t get one. The press car was an Adventure. Did they mention that tidbit? No. So if you want to compare the highest trimmed and optioned Rav4 to the Grand Cherokee, lets compare it to the highest trimmed Grand Cherokee. The GC Trackhawk is $80k, or twice the price of the Rav4. By the way, for the Adventure trim to hit $40K, it needs to be optioned with all the options AND all the dealer accessories as well. Then it hits $40k without any discounts. However, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk starts at $42,540 and goes north from there. No safety features like adaptive cruise control, brake assist, collision warning, or lane departure warning that you get on the Toyota. No HID or LED lighting, no cargo area cover, no sunroof. The fact that you’re comparing the two means you don’t actually get it, or cars in general. You wouldn’t buy a compact CUV to begin with. This video... it isn’t for you. You still play Tonka trucks.
