I know and I was then further elaborating on the common misconception of n2o vs n2o2. N2o in an engine would hurt performance because nitrogen is inert and would smother the oxygen, but n2o2 has enough oxygen to overcome that factor safely.

Way back when I had my '07 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD, I took it in to have the emissions tested for the first tab renewal (Washington). They'd never seen one before. They used a "snap test" : rev the engine, then close throttle, hoping for a cloud of soot to bellow forth. They had to run it several times before they said, shaking their heads, that if I'd scored 49%, I could've passed. I got a 7. When I traded the Jeep in on my 2015 Ecodiesel with over 45K miles, the exhaust pipe was still soot-free. Try that with a Pious.

The issue isn't that is passes when tested, but not when driven. The issue is that when the engine gets too hot, the software will save the engine by disabling the emissions and richening up the mixture. The EPA DOES allow for turning off emissions to save the engine. Which is why FCA is saying there is no issue, because this is allowed.

@MegaElkHunter17 жыл бұрын
Carlos Salinas diesels are actually much better for the environment. Reason being the black smoke that comes out of the exhaust is actually lots of unburnt carbon meaning when it settles on the ground (which it does because diesel smoke is a lot heavier than air. It only rises because it's hot when it comes out) it promotes plant growth and builds soil quality. The more you know

EXACTLY! Diesel were poplar 20 years ago because they made economic sense. Now it just about overall capacity to tow. You could get the optional Cummins diesel in 1994 for $1,500 and it would get 20mpg vs 14mpg for the v10 which was. $450 option. I'd rather have a V10. Cheap to own, maintain and very cheap to replace.
@406Steven7 жыл бұрын
I'm tired of all the dbags with their bro dozers and every single time a new vehicle comes out people are whining about why there isn't a diesel option. So I pretty much have an irrational hatred of diesel engines just due to the community. But with all of the emissions stuff they're packing onto them these days they're not as reliable as they used to be, cost more, require more expensive maintenance, and don't run very well in colder climates. I love it when people use towing to justify buying a diesel and it turns out they pull an aluminum fishing boat to the lake twice a month 4 months out of the year.
@djayt12157 жыл бұрын
Aviator Guy you have to consider that while the scheduled maintenance costs more, the intervals are further apart. I can't speak for your area, but where I am diesel is only a few cents more than gas. really the only reason diesel ever costs more than gasoline is because of tax.

I love this truck! I'd love to see more about how it tows in normal conditions for us weekend warriors that will be towing campers (7 to 9,000 lbs) including the enormous wind resistance most of us will encounter at speed. Most highways are 65 to 70 mph, can it pull a 7,000 lbs camper at that speed, how does the wind resistance affect the mpg at 55 vs 70 mph? These are some of the questions I see on ecodiesel forums that people want answered. It's good to know that it will slog through an extreme grade when needed but how will it perform with max tow weight and payload at highway speeds while dealing with extreme wind resistance caused by campers?

If pushed, the Dealership can't void the warranty due to the fact that it is improving on engine performance and not shortening it's life by having the engine partially re-breathe in soot that is cooled down by overworked antifreeze to bring it's temp down to an ok level to be sucked back into the intake to be burned in the combustion process. What this does is cake the heads and valves with soot and shortens the life on the valve and head. The burn off process uses a certain cylinder or two where it squirts diesel into the cylinder to super heat the exhaust flame to help burn the particulate filter off. It kills pistons and piston rings and also shortens the life of the turbo. The urea being sprayed in only does so much to lessen polution's. Know five people who deleted it and had factory warranty repairs performed after pressing the issue.

Burn less fuel =better for environment and SAVE natural resources . REALITY : Oil companies lose cash when diesels exist (50% better fuel economy) , so oil lobbyists pay off Washington to pass bills that kill Diesels by making them impossible to pass new and unfair emission stds. These same lobbyists pay for , and produce anti-diesel propaganda , making them out to be dangerous , smelly , loud and harder to maintain... None true of modern diesels. I live in Europe where the 50% of cars are diesel powered and here the government does not care about emissions at all. We still have laws from the '60s concerning the measurement of fuel consumption and our rules on diesel car pollution aren't as strict as the rules in USA, probably because car manufacturers have lot of interests about it. People from USA are lucky because here in Europe in some cities there's so much particulate in the air that the major has to forbid using cars for a day or two. Here almost nobody knows that diesel car are dangerous and they are very common due to the good fuel consumption as gas prices in some areas are more than two times higher than in USA. For example a gallon of diesel in USA is 2.20$ while in Europe it costs 5.5$ Here in Europe we have a better fuel consumption but..... we pay it with our health!!!!!!

Vincenzo More people need to read this comment before posting about how they would like to see the EPA gutted. I'm an environmentalist but a realistic one. I believe electric everything is the future be it BEV, PHEV, or plain hybrid. I also love fast cars, big trucks, V8's, and diesels. But electric is simply better. We all need to quit being politics into this type of argument. Right or left it doesn't matter. Whether you believe in climate change or not is up to you, but pollution is real and it can be seen there isn't denying that. NOx and particulates are very bad for your health.

There is no stop sale order for the 2016 Ram EcodDiesels so I believe you could test it as that. 2016's at dealers are being sold though there aren't many left. Interesting to see if the EPA stance on this changes under the new administration. I own a 2016 and could not be happier with it. I wonder how many vehicles would pass emissions under an EPA audit where they test in normal driving outside of test conditions? Not just diesels but also the many higher performance cars available today. They easily pass at the small throttle settings encountered in testing. Who knows when they're actually being run harder. My truck seems awfully clean with a complex and expensive emissions control system engineered to pass a specific test. It does. Now they are saying it must pass under any possible conditions. As far as I know only VW and FCA diesels have come under this sort of scrutiny. VW used a "defeat device" to detect the test and turn on emissions controls. FCA doesn't do that. Very different in my mind. Let's be fair and audit every vehicle and see how many pass driving in the real world.

I honestly think the Eco Diesel is 100 % emissions compliant. From what I have read on this subject it is a fine line between who is right and who is wrong and the EPA like any government entity is going to say that they are right. And it is not like VW problem where they blatantly installed software that detected when being tested for emissions, whereas FCA installed software to help save the engine during the regen cycle. I honestly think the EPA and the CARB and other countries are trying to get rid of the diesel engine completely for light duty vehicles period. California is on the EV bandwagon and the head of CARB has blatantly said she wants light duty diesels gone from the state. I am curious does Colorado have any shops with a emissions test machine that reads NOx and or CO2 and HydroCarbons I know we used to have one in the shop I used to work at in California we used it to test our work after doing tune ups and getting cars ready to pass the Emission Tests.

I hope Chrysler gives you no vehicles to review anymore after this. you are taking advantage of a press car or rather truck in this case to make them look bad. also diesels are better for the environment than gassers because they get so much better fuel mileage. so we are allowed to burn more fuel but we cant have slightly dirtier emissions
@MikeUtoober7 жыл бұрын
Walter what about the pollution made refining fuel? the pollution made producing the def fluid if there is any? the pollution then made from the vehicles exhaust with all the emission stuff on it making you burn 1/3 more fuel? so in the end of the line it appears better but as a whole it makes it worse
@MikeUtoober7 жыл бұрын
Walter diesel takes less to refine than gas by far. and if you make me burn 1/3 more fuel means you need to refine 1/3 more fuel for me to burn. you have to refine that oil and mine it out of the ground. and you have to transport it too. what about those people that drive around a chevy suburban getting 10 mpg for one person when they could drive a compact car getting over 40 mpg either way you have voided your whole argument by starting out with name calling. if you would have kept your argument civil you might have had a chance

They clearly show the truck passing the test in the video with flying colors, zeros across the board. I don't think this is bad press but rather showing how the EPA is freaking out due to the VW scandal and is now putting every diesel under the microscope. If there genuinely is "cheat device" software in the computer then they broke the law and deserve bad press but if they can test this truck on the road with sensors reading emissions while it isn't in cheat mode and they pass that's going to really strengthen Dodge's position. "Hey, we did this without breaking the laws and passed with flying colors, look at how awesome our trucks are!"

Is it true that when the truck is strapped on the rollers, front wheels stationary, that it triggers the truck to go into a "test mode," that is cleaner burning. I wasn't able to watch the entire vid, admittedly, but I thought that the ecu would watch for such parameters and outside the epa tests like stationary front wheels, constant throttle for x-amount of minutes, etc, and then sinking into the "dirty tune", which wouldn't show on this test. Any insight? Thanks!

Read further in the comments and some others are on the same thought process as me, that without all the wheels turning, the "cheat" wouldn't likely show up.

I test drove the Ram ED and the XD diesel, have to say I liked the ED better, it reminded me of a soft 1/2 ton in regards to its payload however. If Ram can't get this EPA thing settled Ford is going to reap the reward in a year. If Ford is thinking ahead they will program the diesel for the best MPGs and lowest emissions they can. The guys who want to tow heavy will buy the 3.5 and 5.0 anyway.

The US agreed to be the only country in the world to run Tier 5 diesel emissions equipment as part of the Paris Climate Agreement. The technology isn't fully ready for Tier 5 levels of Oxides of Nitrogen, so, yes this Ram and even the Volkswagens are almost putting out pure water, they still, in some instances have higher oxides of nitrogen than tier 5 allows. The other problem is all the exhaust equipment is ridiculously expensive to fix, but people in Washington don't care. In the trucking industry, a lot of small businesses are ordering "Glider" kits, so they can use the older, proven diesels that are cheaper to keep running. Our government is making promises, the working class people can't keep.

Wait until you have to get your Air conditioning recharged with R-1234yf. R-1234yf is explosive, because of the propane and reactive(turns to hydroflouric acid in the presence of moisture) because of the flourine. The AC machines cost around $7000.00 for a shop to buy. But, it's good for the environment?! Like MTBE was good for the environment in the gas(lots of mechanics got cancer from that stuff).

what about ford f-150 diesel coming in 2018 will it pass diesel emissions
@MegaElkHunter17 жыл бұрын
diesels are actually much better for the environment. Reason being the black smoke that comes out of the exhaust is actually lots of unburnt carbon meaning when it settles on the ground (which it does because diesel smoke is a lot heavier than air. It only rises because it's hot when it comes out) it promotes plant growth and builds soil quality. The more you know

Is the tow rating that much lower than the other 1500 trucks and why would it be lower?
@fastedz097 жыл бұрын
William Hugelmeyer it would be the difference between the weight of the engines I would assume
@williamhugelmeyer27027 жыл бұрын
That's assuming the v6 diesel is heavier than a hemi. I would bet the weight difference is less than 100lbs give or take as the hemi still is a grey iron block.

mpg for sure if not more test theres still the 2014-16 and i doubt theyll drop the diesel even if. but the whole epa deal is a joke its like they pick on random vehicles that get good mpg ratings.

That is not what was going on! VW had hidden hardware Ram did not had any hidden hardware, Ram just did not report all of the items it was turning off during certain times. Huge difference between what VW was doing.

@GearheadGarden7 жыл бұрын
You have heard of VW right? So there's no mystery here and you said it right in the beginning of the video. That your truck passed is irrelevant if there's hyjinx going on when it's being tested. Just like VW, during testing it's possible that connection of the testing station's equipment to the OBD2 connector could trigger a software change to let the vehicle pass. The answer about not testing for NOx is BS. There's plenty of CO. vehicles that fail emissions precisely because they can't get through the NOx test with all else at passing levels. If they can do it on a gas vehicle they can do it on a diesel. BTW it's "Nitrides of Oxygen" not laughing gas. totally different.
@YamahaR120157 жыл бұрын
so how long has this been going on and what did the automakers do to piss off the EPA that's causing them to just catch this stuff? Did VW just put the EPA under the scope?

@volvo097 жыл бұрын
b kay yeah that emissions inspector was not correct when he said they test at different speeds to eliminate any cheat software variables... that truck knows 2 wheels are not moving, the exact way vw did it. now this is the first time I've heard of this story so I don't know if this truck really does have cheat software, but if it did that's the exact scenario that would activate it.

@cloc54767 жыл бұрын
volvo09 When did he say that? All I saw was a brief explanation of how the test is initiated. Pretty sure that dude knows his job, as inspectors are certified, and licensed by the state.
@belanger97 жыл бұрын
It's not that the inspectors don't know their job, it's that the test is flawed. It's the same test everywhere, hence why software can pick it up. Everyone who has seen, or talked to someone who has seen the test knows what's going to happen, so the computer can pick up that a test happens, then detune the engine to be able to pass the test.

The FCA issue appears to be largely a difference of opinion in the interpretation of the standard as well as possibly some incomplete disclosure by FCA regarding exactly how its system works. A large portion of the EPAs issue with FCA boils down to arguments over what qualifies as necessary to protect the engine from damage in certain operating conditions, as well as how far outside the parameters of the EPAs test standards the system must maintain emissions levels. Is it legitimate for the EPA to demand that emissions work the same at -10 deg F as it does at 70 degrees F? The EPA thinks so. FCA does not. It is much more an issue of splitting hairs than the outright fraud committed by VW. FCA believes that they met the requirment of the standard and has worked hard to try to come to some sort of agreement with the EPA. The folks at EPA and CARB, who are very antagonistic toward industry to begin with, decided they needed to slay one more dragon before the Obama administration left office. It will be interesting to see how fast this gets worked out under the new administration.

I for one wish all states did an emissions test on diesels. "Rolling Coal", IMHO, is disrespectful to people around you and the environment. If you ever really look at diesel particulates, the are large and can be observed with the eye. Just look at when someone "rolls coal". That cloud lingers in the air for quite awhile and settles to the ground. THe particulates are very heavy/dense. Now, when someone "rolls coal" the other drivers happen to pass through that cloud or a pedestrian is nearby because the idiot is trying to prove some childish point, those particulates are inhaled and will settle into the lungs. As a physician and someone with common sense, that is worse that a smokers cloud (secondary smoke) being inhaled. Now, I am certainly not condoning smoking, it is a disgusting damaging habit, but the particulates as well as all the chemicals in diesel exhaust is extremely damaging and is extremely difficult for the body to rid once inhaled inside the lungs. So, I think the EPA should have all diesels tested and visually inspected. As for those that chip their vehicles, a professional automotive diagnostic scan tool can find if a chip has been used. How do I know, I spoke with the area rep for FORD several years ago at my local FORD stealership when I had an 2006 F350 6.0 and was having the infamous EGR problems. He said that even if you remove the tuner a code will be left in the computer that can be found with their scan tool. It is not a code that will trip the engine light but id left in the history. Anyway, all that being said, stop the "rolling coal". It is childish and certainly not cool. It is also inefficient proof of making power. It is excess unburned fuel or the truck running to rich.
