Had you stopped revving it up it may have survived. It needed an oil pump. That’s why it dropped at idle. They are crank driven so they go up and down with rpm’s at idle the worn pump was not strong enough to pump oil. Whenever you see a low oil light the last thing you do is romp on it. You are pretty good at troubleshooting man you know this. Come on lol.

Oil pump or pick-up tube seal or the tube could be cracked above the oil level in the pan. Heat from driving could expand the gap and cause low pressure. Pump is definitely more likely though.

There's a oil sending unit on the motor by the oil filter that trips the oil pressure
@bradcliff70994 жыл бұрын
These oil sending units are very well known at going out! I've put 5 in mine. It is located on the backside of the engine towards the passenger side more. For some reason they start to leak and before you know it you are way low on oil. That's why the low pressure light came on when you accelerated hard or rounding a corner and braking. It was probably low enough that it couldn't get picked up by the pump under those conditions of braking, cornering etc. If the bottom right side of the car is soaked you'll know.

Whenever you use electrical tape in wet areas, you should also use Liquid Tape outside the tape you put on the wiring. I have used Liquid Tape for many years in automotive environments with a zero failure of connections. I installed a two-way radio in a fire truck years ago with the radio connections outside under the truck because the connectors could not be pushed through any holes in the body. I had to cut the cable and put it back together outside the cab. Installed for about 10 years that way. When the truck was sold, I pulled the connection mess apart to see how the wiring fared over the years. It was like new in there. BTW... you could have used the wire loom protective plastic the factory used to protect the wiring from physical damage. You also can use self-fusing rubber tape as a water seal AND a physical protector. First tape the wires separately with electrical tape. Then Self-fusing tape over all of that. Then wrap with electrical tape over the self-fusing tape. Finally the Liquid Tape. That Liquid Tape is awesome stuff!!!

I don't know if that's a fair statement. I think GM has some amazing engineers. When they want to, they can do amazing things- look at the EV1, Volt, Corvette* and SSR. The problem with GM is that some things they do really well and put a lot of money and effort into only to cost cut in other areas, on the same car even and then you end up with some inferior/cheaply produced products that fail prematurely*. Granted, this Grand Prix has some miles on her so even though it sucks to have a catastrophic engine failure, I think she's been an okay car. She was probably nearing the end of her useful life, anyway.

That's a pretty typical oil pump failure on those 3.8's. I've torn down a few that went. The oil pump is on the timing cover there two gears in it that strip out. I had another customer that was accelerating onto the interstate and got a low oil pressure and shut it off immediately and had it towed an we were able to replace the pump and gears and it lived. Typically, they will work not work go all wonky for a few minutes, then they start spinning main bearings till one falls out and then no pressure to anything and it starts dropping rod bearings. Nice to catch it on video. FYI those 3.8's are the easiest engines in the world to swap. I have done enough of them that I can swap them in about 4 hours. There is a plethora of good used junk yard ones.

Scan it Before Anything else! Looks like the oil pump is on the way out and that may be the tip of the iceberg of problems. Fixable, but probably a budget breaker.
@TwentytenS4B84 жыл бұрын
The reason it was stalling was the PCM shutting the engine down to protect it. Also, the reason the low oil pressure alert went off over 1K RPM is because the oil pressure rose to an acceptable level. The oil pump went out which those engines are famous for. Whenever that low oil pressure alert comes on, stop driving immediately or grenade the engine. Also, there could be a spun bearing due to the oil pressure dropping. But a spun bearing is immediately noticeable. The car drove home and wasn't rapping yet until you hit your driveway. But revving the hell out of it while it was knocking ( Due to low oil pressure. ) was not good for it and could possibly have spun the bearing. You have two options, change the oil pump and cross your fingers, or swap out the engine with a used one. Those engines are dirt cheap at the salvage yard and you can get 'em for around $250 with a 30 day warranty. Enlist a friend and buy some beer and pizza and in one afternoon, you're back on the road.

In my opinion you should be able to rev it out even if it's old. Commenters are saying you shouldn't push it but if you sold it and someone went up a steep hill and had to put their foot down, it could have happened to them. You don't want to sell an engine that's about to die like you said, you want someone to have a good runner. You did the testing and it didn't pass. Once the oil warnings and first rattles arrived, it was already over. Hardening on bearings, crank etc would be compromised almost immediately. Even if you did a pump replacement, engine would never be the same. Time to let it go. You made some KZbin money so it's all good. Next!

Remember when you started it at Copart with that engine noise and then it went away? I worked at a Buick Pontiac dealer 20 years ago and would occasionally see a problem like this. The problem would develop after someone did the intake gaskets and allowed old gasket to fall into the valley. After a while all the gasket material would clog up the screen on the oil pickup and starve the engine of oil. It's really a bummer a lot of engines got ruined by allowing this to happen.

I doubt he’d do either, no hate on Randy he did an amazing engine swap on that Dart but with him saying he couldn’t be bothered to do a detail on that car I doubt he’d be wanting to tear the engine down or swap another one in at this point in time especially with his fever/flu he now has too It will most likely be sold as a parts car through Weird Beard I assume

mh488 but usually it would have even a little bit of metal on the dip stick

I would say it's the oil pump in the sump or maybe just the pickup pipe blocked slightly. I'm not fully qualified as a mechanic but I do know about engines. Change the oil pump & pickup, maybe even the pump gear & I reckon she'll be fine.

Rare engine issue for 3800 motor. Randy I hope this does not stop you from getting more GM cars in the future.

Slice a piece of heater hose in half and tape it to the harness between the harness and the valve cover.

Bring it to cleetus and cars and run it thru the demolition drag race. You've got a truck, a car dolly, and nothing to loose by sending it out on a race track for its final run. Saturday feb 15 baytown Texas

I put myself through college replacing those 3800 engines due to rod knocks. Everybody claims they are bullet proof engines, I disagree. Prob $500 for a used engine plus an extra $100 or so for misc. parts. Prob not worth putting an engine in it. And people commenting he should have shut it down when the check oil pressure light came on. Nope, thats pretty much the change engine light (unless the oil pressure sensor is bad). The damage is already done when that light comes on.

check all the vacuum lines running from the throttlebody. mines done this. check fuel pressure regulators on the fuel rails, and those vaccum lines. idk. ive had a idle air control solenoid go bad that sort of had the same issue.

Oil pressure. Pump failed and you were riding it hard. Simply get a low milage motor. It's an easy swap. It is worth rescuing since everything else looks good. You can make some bucks still.

Yup, you can get 3800's for a song these days. My local yard sells them all day long for $250 with 30 day warranty.

Just when you say no issues,bang!. Typical after spending time and money. But great learning video

My buddy had the EXACT same thing happen to his grand prix. Was a generation older with the series 2 3800. About the same milage as well. He was romping on it and it died. He thought it was out of gas. Fired it back up and the noise was identical. If I had to guess, a rod bearing let go. He ended up selling it to some guy who threw a new engine in.
