Great finds in lake Superior. The black sand flies are one thing I don't miss from the UP, they love to bite you on the ears and by your eyes where you glass make it hard to slap them. Keep up the great videos and God bless you and your family.

These must be a different kind of fly. Stable flies stay low by your legs and feet and really don’t fly around your head much. Deer flies buzz around your head more.

I like the quotes around “road”. Trail, maybe? Sam is definitely better at finding agates than I am. I think it’s a combination of younger eyes and that he almost always hunts the dry rocks. I hunt the water because I like other rocks too and they look better in the water. The water also makes for a more interesting video.

I've identified Sam's rock at 4:27 and it's a perfect specimen of donutite which often acquire a polished sheen giving them a glazed appearance. They can be found in many colors and sometimes have small inclusions which give them a sprinkled effect. Collectors typically will display them on trays in glass cases and they're a common trade item. Donutite specimens are often sold individually but purchasing quantities of 12 will garner a discount. That was a great discovery Sam as donutite is most commonly found in the morning. :-)

Amazing variety of granitoid material on that beach. The fossils you're finding are from James/Hudson Bay that hitched a ride down on glacial ice.

I like the striped rocks too. The black and white spider web rock towards the beginning was neat. It sounded like that one went back in to the water. Sam’s purple rock was beautiful. Now the agates are finding Sam by themselves. That was a bit of luck in his shoe. Those flies are something else. So many. They really like you. Good thing you guys brought the nets again.

@@MichiganRocks I am a few days shy of 66 and just started tumbling rocks. Right now all I have is a Dremel, a rotary tumbler, and a vibratory tumbler. I just finished my first batch of rocks and am fairly pleased but I dislike my vibratory tumbler. I wish I would have bought a lot-o tumbler. I have learned a lot from your videos and my 3 year old granddaughter loved watching with me. As we were watching one beach trip, she looked at me with huge eyes and said "he finds all of God's pretty rocks grammies."

Omarraluk or any rock with hole all the way through is "hag stone". Some rocks are just so interesting they deserve space in the tumbler! Question- have you or Sam ever tumbled or slabbed and polished a mystery stone?

Yes, we both have polished them. They mostly polish really well, but many of them have a layer of softer stone. If you avoid the ones with the soft layers, they're great.

The rock at 14:40 is similar to one I found and I asked around to see what people thought and they said it may be a tube agate, mine has a bunch of quarts though. It’s kind of hard to tell in the video but it seems like it has some agate qualities to it, possibly chalcedony along with some tube formations. You had told me on your last video that you had a once in a life time find. Did I miss it or was it not in this video? Either way it’s awesome there’s such a variety on those beaches, Where I hunt on superior all I see is gray lol. I guess it helps to spot the agates though.

Sam’s really nice banded agate was my favorite from this beach too. The fly suit would work for mosquitos too, the holes are very small. The flies and mosquitos can still get you where it touches your skin, but it greatly reduces the number of bites.

Yes, there’s a huge variety of rocks on these beaches. I’m not sure which pink rock you mean without rewatching the video. feldspar is pretty easy to identify because it really reflects the light if you move it back and forth.

That purple rock was just insane! We have deer flies here, which are a bit bigger than those flies and they like to fly around your head. They can get bad, but not quite that bad.

If I am tumbling a certain type of rock and I need to add more to them after say the first stage if I do not have any of that certain type of rock can I just use any other rock I have as filler and thank you for your channel you are very informative and I love seeing the results that you get

For the most part, that's fine. When tumbling Petoskey Stones, I don't like to mix them with other rocks though, because they're so soft and the other rocks will bang them up. Generally, it's best to stay with rocks of similar hardness if you can. That being said, I mix up rocks of different hardness in the first stage all the time (except Petoskeys). I also mix them in later stages, but that's in a vibratory tumbler. I think it's a little more important to keep rocks separated by hardness a little more in a rotary tumbler.

The trail you were taking to the lake reminded me of some of my favorite ATV trails that I travel through the Manistee National Forest. You need a drone with GPS and autopilot to hover above your head to create a turbulence to divert the flys. I don’t know what brand of beach shoes Sam was wearing but I’d definitely invest in a pair of those. Ha Ha !!! Just returned from 2 weeks in Michigan. The first week the rock Gods returned and showered us with awesome stones. The second week my wife and I came down with the worst head colds we’ve had in years. And ended up going to the urgent care centers at different times. They seemed to be loaded with people with the same symptoms and the doctor told me they think it’s a spin off of the latest COVID strain. The rocks nested in the tree trunk was cool. I wonder if that occurred naturally or someone placed them there.

That trail is so much sandier than it looks in the video. You could see it better when we walked the last little bit. Sure is fun to drive in if you have a Jeep. Sorry you got a cold or COVID or whatever it was. That doesn't sound like a good way to spend a vacation. Nancy and I got really bad colds in late winter or early spring, but we tested negative for COVID. You never know though, could have just been a bad test. I think the rocks wedged in trees are natural. Sometimes, you'll see where someone has lined up a few rocks on a log though.

@@MichiganRocks I know all about that powdery sand. If your following any other ATVS you need a pair of good fitting goggles or about 10 minutes into the ride your eyes are screaming. Sure is fun to ride in though. The weekend prior to the 4th weekend we encountered a bunch of people in a large tire bike race. They weren’t happy about us being there but there wasn’t any notifications posted so we didn’t know.

What an awesome hunt guys!!! That purple one might be chevron amethyst!! For the bugs, try citronella oil and believe it or not, sometimes the colour of your clothes can attract them, Sam was wearing darker shades and had fewer flies around him

I look at all kinds of rocks. I do have favorites, like Lake Superior agates, but I pick up lots of different things. I think if I picked up the stuff I don't usually pick up, it wouldn't be a very interesting video. There are a lot of really plain rocks on the beach.

Yeah, they're pretty bad, but the rocks are good enough to make it worth putting up with them. I wouldn't last too long without long pants or the bug suit.

My friends are coming up there sometime in August, I’m hoping that they find and bring me back some rocks, I was up there a couple of years ago, went nuts at white fish point, anyway, my question is, what time of the year are the flies the worst, thanks, oh, I wish I was your neighbor, and was able to go on rock hunts with you, I live in west central Indiana (Brazil)

I don't live up there, so I'm only going by my experience and also what I've heard. I think the stable flies, or sand flies, or whatever they're called can be out any time it's hot and humid. I suspect that mosquitos are worst in June, but they're usually not on the beach, just in the woods.

Wow, Sam's shoe agate looks like a Botswana. That's nice. There's something in your diet that makes the flies like you more. I don't know if it actually works, but my dad swore by it: Put a dryer sheet in a hat and wear it. Like literally lay it on your head and put a hat on. I can't swear to it's efficacy, but he kept a box of dryer sheets in his golf bag and a spare in the trunk. Worth a shot at least.

Sam and I discussed our diets briefly, figuring that was the difference in what was attracting the flies. We didn't figure anything out though. Last year, someone told me that Vick's VapoRub keeps flies away. I bought some and tried it on the day in this video. I rubbed it on one leg, but not the other. There was no difference. I'll give the dryer sheet a try, but I can't imagine it doing any good for these flies if I keep it in my hat. This type of fly attacks your legs mostly, so I think I'd be better rubbing the dryer sheet on my legs.

Just curious. All the black rocks you pass over and around. What are they? Schist? Obsidian? really dark Agate? Maybe in a video you could pick up a few and let us know what they are? Thank you.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I used to think it was basalt until a biologist commented on one of my videos leading me to believe that it's not basalt. I can tell you it's not obsidian, schist, or agate. My current guess is that it's greywacke. I say that because it looks just like an Omar (the rocks with the holes), except without the hole. Omars are made of greywacke.

You’re lucky to find a nice beach for Rick hunting in the Eastern UP. Out by me in Houghton, we have black beaches covered with stamp sand! Great for campfires but not rocks.

My sister lives near a beach near Lake Linden. The stamp sand problem there is bad. You do have some really nice beaches that aren't covered by stamp sand up there though.

I usually try to go when it looks like it will be sunny for a few days. Lack of wind means flies, so windy isn't all bad. This year, Sam has a job and had to ask for a few days off, so we just hoped for the best.

I don't know what else that rock could be. At first the color seemed like a different shade of purple to me, but now I'm not so sure. I think it has to be amethyst.

Do rocks shrink over time? I have a rock I found on Lake Ontario, US side. It's blue with a white cross. I swear it's about 1/4 smaller than it was when I found it, maybe thirty or forty years ago. And: what was that black rock with the gray circular patches? You found it just after that yellow "keeper" and before Sam found the chunk of quartz. I have one of those and have always wondered what it is.

I don't think rocks shrink. Maybe you just remember it being bigger. I'm not sure which rock you're referring to in the video. Could you give me a time stamp, like 4:39?

Black rock with gray chunks. I thought maybe it was a piece of road tar with stone chunks. Still have it. It's all smooth, like that one you found.

Deet doesn't bother the flies, only mosquitos. I haven't found any spray that works. I'm not sure what the magic temperature is that they don't bother people or if it's more of a continuum. I'm not up there enough to be much of an expert.

Someday when the world becomes normal again ,I would love to buy some of those baseball sized rocks of unusual colors and patterns for my two aquariums ,they do not need to need polished just pretty for a fish tank . Now would be a bad time because shipping and handling would be just so expensive !

Are you familiar with USPS flat rate boxes? They're more expensive than they used to be, but you can load them with rocks for the same price as loading them with marshmallows.

It’s always helpful to use a time stamp to indicate which rock you’re talking about. I make a lot of video and it gets difficult to remember which rocks were in which video. If you just type in a time, like 2:49, it automatically makes a link right to that spot in the video. Were you talking about the rock at 2:49?

I just got my fly net suit today. I didn't know you had a link for it. 😔 heading up there in the next couple weeks. Does bug spray work at all? I don't remember them being that bad last year. Still on a mission to find agates. Found lots of yooperlites in just an hour or so at night but all day long multiple days couldn't find me an agate searching different beaches from whitefish to ontonagon. I hope this year I have better luck.

Agates are really hard to find. Flies are not hard to find. They're worst when it's hot out. Bug spray works great for mosquitos, but not for flies, unfortunately.
