Dont remove the antenna, it does not leak, I made a 13/16” hole on the top of my f150 to mount a antenna just like it, and the nmo mount has a o-ring on the under side of it, between the cab and the brass nmo mount, and as far as off road communications go, the way the antenna is mounted is literally the way to go…also you can unscrew the antenna, not sure if you knew that! Regardless of what you decide to do, Congrats on the truck!!!
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
That’s not how the previous owner did it. This bitch is glued on. Can’t take it off. Done totally wrong. Best way is NMO mount, or 3rd brake light bracket. GJ motor sports makes probably the best solution but it’s expensive
@TherealRodeo3 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad You will have the best reception with the roof mounted antenna, virtually every emergency vehicle in the US uses holes in the roof to mount the antenna, it will give the best db gain on your antenna as you have a great ground plane. Great reception is made by antennas not radios, use an NMO mount, although GJ motorsports are awesome, the mount is not expensive as the lights are almost half the cost, and you need chase lights anyway
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
If done right, yes a roof mount will give you the best reception, but this one was not done right. First of all it’s a 1/2 wave antenna. From what I’ve been told, These don’t need or benefit much from grounding. There are much much better more efficient antennas out there that with proper grounding will get much better signal. Any grounding this got, is negated by all the glue here. I can’t even take the antenna off right now it’s so bad.
@TherealRodeo3 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad common misunderstanding of electrical grounding and "Ground plane" Some antennas need a ground plane and some don't based on their design. Typical ground plane is 3 square feet of metallic surface that the antenna is mounted to. Fiberglass boats are a perfect example of zero GP antennas. The marine band radios are very close in frequency to the 150mhz area that off-roaders are using. This would be a great subject for a video, as many off-roaders use 2m radios and have little understanding of of the system. You can test your antenna with an SWR meter and see how well its working. A great working antenna will have an SWR close to 1:1, but 1:1 to 1:2 will suffice. You might have a great working system and don't know it. In general the 1/2 wave antenna is usable where you do not have a ground plane. For instance, if you car has a fiberglass body. The 5/8 wave antenna has the most gain and would probably be your better choice. Ham radio call sign KD9-JRQ Keep the content coming
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is something I had a hard time understanding the first time around. Specially when installing on the aluminum body of the Gen2 Raptors that don’t provide a good ground plane at all. I ran a 5/8 - 2m uhf mount antenna on that truck with a grounding strap to a large rack. Got really great range out of that radio. Still learning this system. This radio is really locked down and not as intuitive as a Yasue radio.

It's cool that you actually got a truck. It's got alot of good parts on it, like the first owner built it, them moved on. As for the attena through the roof, I personally prefer the look of it centered. Plus when I have it off, I put a cap over it. This dude did it wrong. But as for it leaking, my truck sat outside in Florida for 3 years getting poured on, no leaks.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
This guy drilled it and glued the antenna to the roof. No plate or anything. Just a NMO mount with a washer thru a hole and some glue. Once I finally get it off, the best option will be to patch it and do it right.

Ok, this one is new to me. Can you provide me some more details on that the issue is with them?
@OlympianShepard3 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Mine started right around 80k and progressively has gotten worse. The output shaft speed sensor on the lead frame fails (dashboard/gauges cease to display all information) tricking the pcm into thinking you’re at 0 mph regardless of how fast you’re actually going and throwing the transmission into 1st gear. You can imagine how dangerous this is if you’re on the highway.

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I have yet to experience this extreme of an outcome, the issues I am having are the dash/gauges fail and the transmission will only operate with gears 3-5 and a simple restart fixes the problem every single time. With the part on back order and Ford refusing to issue recalls, I am unfortunately at a stand still with the problem.

Thanks man. The V6 gets a bad rap. I’ve had 2 and haven’t had any issues with them after some hard miles. The V8 feels lazy by comparison when it’s NA. But supercharged it’s a beast. Still not as fast, but the powerband is more consistent and keeps going. Unlike the V6 that tops out easy. Wife loves her current Jeep. The V8 would be a much better fit for her. @KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
The supercharged makes up for the lazy V8, but only so much. The Gen2 is still peppier and faster off the line. It’s also easier to live with on a daily basis. Gen1 requires a whole different way of driving and really pushing down on the pedal to get her going. But it also has more power to go in the big end. Ecoboost tops out quick.

So it really depends on what your plan is for the truck. If you want a good daily that’s comfortable and can offroad, get the gen3. If you want a dedicated off-roader you plan to upgrade like crazy, the Gen1 is the better platform. But it kinda sucks as a daily because of the MPGs and less tech. For me the choice was easy, I needed something dedicated for off-roading. And the gen3 would not take the upgrades and abuse I had in mind for it.

Your gen 2s r nice but this gen 1 is a beast congrats bro if u had to compare gen 1 gen 2 I would highly apreciate your feed back as I own a gen 1 any problems u ran into and if they are reliable trucks
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
Issues with the Gen1 are well know and we will be doing an everything wrong type of video coming up that address the most common issues with these trucks have. As for off-roading, the Gen1s reliability is well know. Many examples still running the trails with over 200k miles on them. And being a more analog platform, it means less potential things that can go wrong

What was the exhaust ??
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad7 ай бұрын
No clue. It did not have any brand labels on it. It was just obnoxiously loud.

Bro.......BRO!!!!!!! What?!!! That truck is the SH1T!!! This is so awesome! So happy for you guys that you found such a great Gen1 in such amazing shape. This is going to be an awesome experience for all of us. I agree with you about the sunroof, it is so hard to find a Raptor without a sunroof. I was looking for a used Gen 2 without a sunroof for a while and they just dont exist. Oh well. Ill make sure when I order my Gen 3 next year to get it without a sunroof for sure. Btw, sell that piece of crap jeep that your wife drives and keep the TRX. Really want to see someone put that thing through its paces like it sould be. Jeeps suck anyways. Lol! Looking forward to all the fun new project and offroad videos from y'all!

That’s what we are trying to do. Wife loves the Jeep so she needs to be super happy with the replacement. We will see what happens but selling the Jeep is the only way to do both

SVC is the best and I hope to get my next truck built by them! To bad they are moving out of SoCal to Utah. SMOG?
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man. Totally blows they are moving. Been working with other local shops now to maintain the truck and have found some great support and other suspension kits that are blowing me away. Look at HRD and HM if your local to SoCal. Lots of good things coming out of those shops.

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Thank you! Just picked yes a 2019 Raptor and got back in and California is not having it. 70k base with 45k parts and 15k labor. Bad part is that it is illegal to drive.

I'm finally looking to buy my 1st gen in a few weeks. I'm looking for a much higher mileage than you; my budget is around 30-33k with TTL, but it's still interesting to see your experience. I'm thinking of shipping mine though. Can't wait to see what you've got lined up for this truck.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
Getting one priced that low it tough. Your looking at a truck with over 200k miles in the current market. Hope you find something. There are plenty of good ones out there stock.
@Kirby9153 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad yea. I'm looking for bone-stock trucks. I've found a couple 2011s with 130k miles at around $29k that look clean from the pictures and they aren't base models. The only reason I'm ok with higher mileage is that I hear the 6.2 is dead reliable. I can handle basic repairs myself. I don't know if you watch 'The Staight Pipes' on KZbin, but one of them bought a high mileage Raptor, and it looks nice and seems to operate flawlessly. Your Raptor is a monster though! I love that it's supercharged. Like I said, I can't wait to see more.

@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don’t know. The fact that it had a not ca emissions has me worried. But from talking to a company that helps with DMV registration, as long as the truck runs clean, I should be able to title it and pass smog in Cali. Still not sure how that all works but will be finding out

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I looked into high flow cats for a prior truck I owned and none of them were CARB compliant. But, if she blows clean and passes visual, that’s all that should count.

@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad well if you ever wanna just run a cat back instead of a full exhaust send me a price (cheaper than a brand new set). That's all I'm really missing on my raptor to have it complete. If you decide to keep them it's no big deal at all! Just know you got a buyer on hands :)

Surprised how many want them considering the smog hassle. Right now taking them off would really be too much work. It would have to happen while she’s at SVC and they have the front suspension cutout. And even then it’s an all day job.
