I'm from Long Island. There's a submarine base and General Dynamics Electric Boat company right across the sound. 50 years ago we were out on a 27 foot boat fishing. A submarine surfaced not 100 yards from us ... That was not only surreal. It was scary. We didn't need to be told to move off. And in that day and age we weren't 100% sure it was American.

@@v3nom11065 It doesn't necessarily have to be war games. Warships do live fire exercises pretty often and have designated "boxes" far out to sea for those types of things. @chickenmonger123
@chickenmonger123 Жыл бұрын
That’s not how square miles work? As in, square miles aren’t a measure of length only. They also measure width. Meaning, if it was within a set of miles from a place, it wouldn’t be square. It wouldn’t be a dozen. 12 square miles is 4 miles by 3 miles. Or some fraction thereof. Now if you measured a cordoned of area you could measure in square miles.

No, any intruder that crosses the 60 degree parallel south will be caught by these big patrol ships. No one is allowed to go to Antarctica without an invite or a permit. "Unknowingly".... except they have a radio and are being hailed on 16.... and I can assure you the cordinates for the boundaries of the training area were broadcast for over 1000 miles (sideband can reach 1000) on ch 16 ... 12 times in an hour. Last time i seen this happen they sent the chopper. All that said it was more Ignorantly than Unknowingly. They heard the broadcast but likely didnt want to map the coordinates. (Which for agument sake "they dont have that capability" they have a phone i can promise you and you can type cordinates into google and save them as a mark). A lot of radio chatter you tune out thinking it doesnt pertain to you.

Furthermore, I would also bet my license that the warship or the land station broadcasting the zone had been trying to call the "vessel in the vicinity of X,Y you are in a restricted zone" Usually the area is restricted because they gonna drop lead there. I had the Royal Danish Naval Air Squadron flying a 200 perimeter around their ship. We were 150miles offshore hauling lobster gear by Hydrographer Canyon. The pilot asked us if he could get some Lobster for the Admiral. We told he after we haul back. He proceeded to give us an insane private airshow doing all kinds of sick stunts in a Blackhawk while they waited. Hovered, dropped a bag down with all 4 shoulder patches and we sent back 8 x 2 -3 lb lobsters and 13 deep-sea Red Crabs. You never know what you will see in Gods country

Pretty sure We were used for practice targets often. Had an F-15 fly 20’ over the surface , started as a spec. If they came to you to vacate the area. Then there is an exercise going on, and they don’t want you to get curious and get caught up. Currently working with a Carrier strike group, and keeping you out of that bubble. Or a submarine in the area and probably coming to surface for resupply. Normal day to day…they’ll sail by. So it’s certainly for the fisherman’s safety.
