Moving sucks. I think we can all agree on that.
But as I share in this video, in spite of all the hard work and effort that goes into it, what we experienced over our own 40+ days moving out Portland was nothing short of magical.
Our heads would constantly worry about everything working out and us leaving on time (because that's what heads do best!). But we learned in time that the less we'd let that happen and the more we allowed things to unfold, the more the lovely surprises, the unexpected encounters, and the wonderful gifts from the Universe.
Watch our crazy journey leaving the US and the amazing lessons we walked away with.

I’m a 61 year old single woman who just sold her dream home to move to Belize. Rather than selling everything, which was completely overwhelming, I decided to donate it to charity. I did keep a few special, sentimental pieces and put those in storage. At the end of six months I will make a final decision of whether I want to dispose of those things, give it to Family, or ship it to Belize. I’m only taking three suitcases to a furnished house. I’m spending the next few weeks visiting family in the US before I fly to Belize in July. Portugal was my second choice, if I’m unhappy I take comfort in knowing that I can always move on to another country. But my life has to be about continuing to grow and having adventures and international living is the solution for me.

I got rid of 99% of my belongings (car included) in my 60's and moved to Florence, Italy, BY MYSELF, in 2017. I acquired my Italian citizenship last year and I have NEVER been happier. Stuff is just that, STUFF. I had come here for college in 2015, studied two years, then returned to California with an empty check in bag. If I couldn't get things in that bag or the ones I carried on the plane, it was goodbye. I had a storage unit FILLED with all my stuff - furniture, kitchen ware, electronics, etc.. My mantra was "when in doubt - throw it out"!

This story resonates with me. Four years ago, my husband and I relocated 2000 miles away from Seattle. We only brought 2 suitcases, our electronics, important documents and of course our beloved beautiful mini schnauzers and a car full of stuff. It was very liberating to donate, sell, gift and throw away stuff. The amazing thing was that it ocurred to me to advertise on Craigslist "all house contents for sale for a flat fee". Incredible as it sounds, a nice gentleman shows up with $3,000 USD and a moving truck to free us from all our furniture, kitchen gadgets (pots and pans included). If you do the math, it is cheaper and infinitely simpler to buy things again than it is to haul your stuff 2000 miles away. Doing this saved us a lot of work, stress and a variety of logistic nightmares. It was also very exciting to go shopping for new furniture and have all new decor!!! We took our time to furnish our new home. It was fun to score great bargains via classified ads. It is unbelievable the number of great quality items your can get for pennies on the dollar (or free!)if you are patient. Good luck to all who read this! 👍

My children and grandchildren also live overseas. I’m 71, recently widowed and facing some of the issues you raise in this incredibly inspiring, yet down to earth video. I’m wanting anew start nearer to them, so a big Thank you for sharing your move with the world. I’ve been ‘here’ before, but now I’m doing it on my own - which is at the core of my new adventure. Fifteen years ago, when my late husband retired we moved from California to the East Coast. I well remember that period of letting go of so much stuff in and surging forth to rebuild a life that I now am getting ready to free myself from. Some of it left with my husband’s death and now I want to re-embrace whatever my new life will bring. I’d mistakenly thought that I’d made our ‘forever’ home in a lovely community near the kids, but it all changed. I’m doing this step cautiously, because I suspect radical independent moves don’t get repeated too often at my age. Whatever the days ahead bring, I’m grateful for the knowledge that others are doing this sort of thing too. Whether the motivation is a feeling of being stuck or a full stop like illness and death; if you’re the one still standing, it’s never too late to get going again.

This resonated with me quite a bit and I will admit I shed some tears watching this. My husband and I just moved from the west coast to back east, and we threw out two truck loads of possessions. We tried to donate a lot of it but thrift stores are overflowing with crap and no one would take stuff without a great amount of negotiating, so we finally just called up one of those junk pick up services and let them throw it all in a truck and drive off with it. It was such a liberating feeling to let go of things we have clung onto for years. You said "Attachment is a bitch" and you aren't kidding. It literally robs us of our freedom and our lives. If we measured the value of things by the time we put into researching, buying, maintaining, moving and using our things instead of just the dollar amount it cost to buy them, I doubt we would buy and own as much as we do. Having said all that, I admire you greatly for taking such a risk at this stage of your lives and I am totally envious. I think you've made a great decision and I look forward following your adventures.

@@BeneaththeSurfaceYT - it's near impossible to donate anything, the world is becoming full of everything. I'm from Eastern Europe but I can't take anything to my country, people seem to have it all ! Apart from money, that is, so, the lesson here is simple, let's think twice before buying on impulse. As a woman, I would like to buy some new clothes but...where would I store them and when would I wear them. The same goes for everything else. So, airplane and train tickets seem a better investment in our 'golden years'.

When I decided to go long-term to Japan, I just told myself from the beginning that if something works out, it was meant to be. If not, I just needed to sit down and figure out what went wrong and why. Fortunately, I started long before I set an actual date. My miracle was when my niece’s husband (whom I barely knew) told his uncle (whom I didn’t know at all), who had been in the Peace Corps, about my plan. This uncle knew some Japanese people from his Peace Corps days who had an online newsletter. They invited me to submit a little article telling where I wanted to go, what I wanted to do, and why, and to invite English-speaking Japanese people to write to me. I ended up with six pen pals with whom I exchanged emails for six months before I went. I was able to meet three of them, stayed with two for short periods, and one became a very good friend. Serendipity!

Im a single woman almost 68 yrs old, and had to go through, by myself, years of stuff, that the ppl who lived with me, just walk away, my children, my ex husband, businesses, charities, all the things that were stored in my house. Its hard, its sad, but also rewarding and relief, to dis attach from all these things. Onward to my new adventure

The happiest time of my life was when I put all my crap in storage and lived out of a suitcase in London and Berlin. Our stuff owns us, we do not own it. You can easily and cheaply rent a room in someone else's flat and use all their stuff. You can live anywhere. I am in the process of getting rid of most of my stuff so I can get out of the US also. I cannot buy a house here, it is too expensive. There is no point in getting on the property ladder at this stage of life. The American way is to accumulate as much stuff as possible. A friend of mine lived on a narrow boat in London for 9 years. He had room for 5 changes of clothing. His clothes closet was 6 inches wide. His bathroom was the size of a shower stall. You know what? That is all he needed. I learned even more from staying on his boat. You just need a place to sleep, relax a bit, and a place to cook. Most people in England put all their clothes in a clothes wardrobe that is 3 feet wide. Most Americans cannot fathom that. They do not accumulate so much crap there. It is all about the culture. Americans are brainwashed to buy a bunch of stuff and lug it around the rest of their lives. Most people in America have a two car garage, and many of them cannot put their cars in it. They cram crap in it and park the car on the street. I am excited to follow your journey in Portugal. You will keep my motivated.

We moved from Cali to Portugal with my partner 3 months into pregnancy with 2 massive dogs (so had to do kennel training on top of it). Same thing, sold all our things, our cars, and got on the plane with only 2 suitcases each (we wanted to start fresh and the cost of containers was equivalent to re-buying everything new on the other side). Can so relate to this video. Doing all this while my partner was having morning sickness (which doesn't stop in the morning btw), was A LOT. Continuing the journey on the other side in Portugal was a lot too! We airbnb'd for months before we finally found a stable long term lease. But now we're so grateful for tour new life and so proud of ourselves for having cleared so much energetically for the arrival of our tiny baby 🙂 PS: your journey with paperwork is not over once you're in Portugal. Adminstration was a real pain in the butt for months after our arrival. It is a beautiful country but get ready for some of the most mismanaged administrations in the developed world. The chaos, the stress, but ultimately the belief that everything will turn out ok. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures in my country and I hope it's everything you hope for and more. Also a tip, try to look at smaller locations for your permanent home, because Portugal being so small has this advantage: even a remote village that will be cheaper and more "homely" will still potentially be just 30 mins away from other bigger cities. You have a lot of that near Coimbra, places that will be halfway between Aveiro, Coimbra, Porto but won't be too crowded or busy. Anyway, great video, loved to watch it!

We parked our 5th wheel in a campground for 7 months until we found a home without wheels. We love living in wine country!! Sonoma is more beautiful than I could ever imagine. And I live on the same large property as my daughter and grandson. I have a small well lit art studio and large garden. Life can be a dream if you’re willing to make changes and let go. Just go!

So many memories for me in this video. In 1993, at 40, I resigned my position of 21 years, sold my home, cleared away everything I had managed to acquire in only 20 years; still a lot with a growing son who had been putting trash bags of his unwanted items in the attic-Surprise!! I moved to St Croix with only suitcases and twenty boxes. And in 2019 I moved once again back stateside and kept only a few larger items in a storage shed which I paid for upfront. And in August 2021 went back and cleared out all the remaining items. Put together a pallet for shipping to TN, where I had a Tiny built. To this day I continue to live as small and with as little as possible. Only what’s needed! And it is perfect. A 19’ travel trailer in a RV resort in FL and a Tiny escape in TN. And in two months taking off for Barcelona. And my end of November I will be in Barbados. From there thr plans are evolving. I’ve loved to travel and plan to do so for a very long time. Congratulations on your Portugal move. It is the country I have chosen should I decide to move further away from states again. Blessings.

I am really loving your content. We too are in our 50s having lived in 7 countries around the world. We fell in love with Portugal many years ago and planned on buyIng a propery. there and spending part of every year there, and unfortunately life has taken us out of that dream for now. I retired in 2017 and went through a similar ordeal. My eureka moment was to throw out EVERYTHING that could not fit into two roller suitcases and a laptop bag. I chose not to sell, give away, or other wise delay my plan. I just tossed it all, even clothes and items I loved. In fairness, I do maintain a storage unit with personal items like documents and winter clothes since I travel in warm climates usually. But my possessions no longer own me as they once did and I am free to travel around the world as I please.

Over forty years ago I worked for a short time with a guy in his late 40s. He moved around the world a lot. Can't recall his name now but I remember him saying: What you can't fit into 2 large suitcases you don't need. Hasn't stopped me collecting a lot of junk. I just declutter the truly superfluous every few years.

I've moved many times and each time I've had a clearout of clutter. I can guarantee that after a few weeks I don't even remember what I chucked away (anything saleable goes to charity the rest is taken to recycling or waste disposal dump). I've realised I actually use very little on a daily basis. I much prefer to travel light through life.

I have never commented on any you tube video, but had to comment on yours. Wonderful videos! Please do more! Have a great deal of admiration for all you both have accomplished and will accomplish in Portugal. Loved the part of how the mind thinks a certain way based on past data, but that is limited and we can’t let ourselves succumb to this. That resonated a lot with me. The truth is there are endless wonderful possibilities that await us in any given situation.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m feeling so burdened by all my stuff and I feel paralyzed every time I try to make decisions. Like you i have seen this first-hand many times it doesn't only change our course its changes us, feeling blessed and grateful. thanks for posting this video and speaking from the heart. i too see myself in Portugal one day, soon. Thankfully I've never been a hoarder of any type and now I own just enough to fit one normal size lock-up. My life feels lighter because of this. I'm not attached not even to my house and I own it.
